Remember that Saint Nick allegedly slapped a fellow bishop at the Council of Nicaea for disagreeing with him on the question of whether Chris was coeternal with God the father or created by him, and while on the one hand this probably didn’t happen (Nicholas was at the council but Arius would not have been since he was not a bishop), on the other hand the legend- at least when it started circulating over 1000 years after his death- seems to have been cited as a good thing and an example of his extreme devotion to Jesus Christ.
