An experiment in language change
Nifty little language game here.
I can read back to 1500 with basically no difficulty
at 1400 I have to read slowly and carefully, but I can understand all of it save a couple words
at 1300 I can still comprehend most of it if I read slowly, but a much larger percentage of the words are unfamiliar to me, even with context
1200 and earlier are almost totally unintelligible
my synagogue was set on fire last night during Shabbat at 3:00 AM in an arsonist attack.
no one was injured, which i am extremely grateful for. they have several security cameras, so there is a suspect in custody. the details and motivation haven't been shared, but it can be reasonably assumed to be a hate crime.
this was the first synagogue established in the state, the only one that's not hours away, and certainly the largest in the area. two Torah scrolls are destroyed beyond repair, 5 are damaged. the library where children have religious school and morning Shabbat service is held has been completely burnt down, much of that section of the building that's left is covered in soot and ash. the administrative offices were also lost.
our Tree of Life, which was for important life events like bar/bat/b'nei mitzvahs, was destroyed. i was just looking at it this past Tuesday while waiting for a meeting with my rabbi. it was dozens of bronze plaques in the shape of leaves with commemorations on them placed above a trunk. there is a photo of the wreckage that makes me cry every time i look at it.
we have a rescued scroll from Nazi-era Czechoslovakia (it is thankfully unharmed). we have a Holocaust memorial garden. we have names of dead loved ones displayed. memories in and on the walls. there are so many deeply meaningful and largely irreplaceable things here.
my rabbi was out of state for the last several days. i cannot imagine how he's feeling.
im fucking pissed at the police department. they said that they would patrol the grounds more often in light of the worldwide rise in antisemitism. I have not personally seen them once. they let the only area for our community to gather be set on fire.
i am exhausted. i am angry. i am thankful it is not any worse, because it easily could have been, but tonight i am grieving that little library full of vintage Jewish books.
A fire heavily damaged Jackson’s only synagogue before dawn Saturday – the same house of worship that was firebombed by the Ku Klux Klan in
The same Synogogue was also bombed in 1967. This is the best article I could find so far this soon after the fire.
yes, this is my synagogue. Beth Israel Congregation was firebombed by the KKK in 1967 along with the rabbi's house because he was an outspoken supporter of civil rights for Black Americans.
here are some photos of the aftermath of the most recent fire:
I have been asked about fundraising, so I will be providing a link to donations.
Please help us rebuild if you can.
Now THIS is art. 😍
“When I first saw the original painting, I began to do some research on that little boy. I could find everything I wanted about every other detail in the painting, but there was nothing about him. No history. And so I wanted to find a way to imagine a life for this young man that the historical painting had never made space for in the composition: his desires, dreams, family, thoughts, hopes. Those things were never subjects that the original artist wanted the viewer to contemplate. In order to reframe the discussion, I decided to physically take action to quiet [and crumple] the side of the painting that we’ve been talking about for a very long time and turn up the volume on this kid’s story. And that’s the reason why I started that painting.” Via Artnet News 2019/03/27
Never thought I would consider the notion that Argentina is keeping Chile warm with its colossal ass.
There are some very specific ass Wikipedia articles.
Great Michigan Pizza Funeral - Wikipedia
Please take a moment to read this. A Canadian company (Highland Copper Company) wants to build a sulfide copper mine near Lake Superior (Copperwood Project), which holds 10% of the world’s freshwater. The mine would produce 98.5% toxic waste, stored in a dam just two miles from the lake. The dam can only withstand a 1-in-100-year storm, but the area has had two 1-in-1,000-year storms in the past decade. If it breaks, toxic water could contaminates Lake Superior & nearby freshwater sources, which could lead to acid mine drainage, where sulfide minerals react with water and air to produce sulfuric acid. This acid can leach heavy metals such as arsenic, lead, and mercury into the water, severely harming aquatic ecosystems and making the water unsafe for human consumption. Similar contamination events have led to long-term environmental damage and water quality degradation at other sulfide mines in the U.S., where nearly all have failed to prevent pollution. Additionally, this could negatively impact local communities by reducing property values, limiting long-term employment opportunities due to the finite nature of mining operations, and creating economic instability linked to environmental degradation. The company wants $50 million in taxpayer funding to move forward. The Michigan Senate is about to vote, if they don’t get the funding they can’t build it.

when ur reading fanfic and one character was cooking and the other comes up to them and they start making out and everyones like starting to take their shirts off and the author STILL hasnt mentioned anyone turning off the stove
actually you know what that's exactly it i would rather someone add 5 parantheticals after every sentence than use tone indicators it's 1. accomplishing SO much more in terms of clarity 2. extremely funny to look at depending on how they're used
observe:
"is this real? /gen" — i thought /gen meant "general" for ages. i would not be able to understand this on first sight a few years ago and is thus ineffective
"is this real? (genuine question)" — i fully understand this without issue
"is this real? (genuine question) (can't tell) (very realistic) (looks real) (scary) (photoshop?)" — is not only incredibly clear it's also very funny to read all of these thoughts stapled together while also in their own parentheses. it's also the most useful because now i can actually address all parts of what they are asking me with as much specificity as BOTH of us need
parentheses my beloved (they are for bonus thoughts) (and questions) ( and sidetracks) (like a 2nd conversation on top of the first)
Ok my brothers math teacher has pissed me off so bad that I’m writing an email. Do you know how seethingly mad I have to be to write an email.
literally consumed by the white-hot rage of a dying star atm.
IS IT CRACK? IS IT CRACK YOU ARE SMOKING SIR? CHATGPT IN A MATH CLASS? THE LANGUAGE MODEL? IN A MATH CLASS?
#staymadforever. It worked. My brother's daily homework has been stopped for a week for "no reason" get fucked old man
i wanna voice this so badly oh my god can you show tje wjole email??
Okay yeah sure, the whole email + the pdf attachments I sent him
Hello sir, I wish I could say I am emailing you in good spirits. Unfortunately, it would seem you have made several fatal blunders in your teaching approach as of late. In case you were unaware, AI language models cannot do math. This makes them FUNDAMENTALLY unusable in teaching a math class. I have been privy to some of your homework materials lately as a consequence of your complete failure to double check the solvability of the problems assigned to your students. There are dozens of free of low-cost teaching materials available online if you are struggling to come up with questions for your assignments but using a Language Learning Model AI as a resource for math problem generation is inexcusable if you not at least willing to check the accuracy of the provided materials.
LLM AI like Chatgpt are trained to predict and thus generate what it believes comes next in a sentence or conversation. Thus the term "language learning model" it is using its data to approximate the answer to questions based on the data surrounding the given prompt. Unfortunately for you, this little prediction trick does not work with math. Chatgpt is "guessing" what comes next based on the data you have given it, turning logical equations into a tangled mess of numbers that don't add up.
In one of your recent assignments, labeled "Unit 1 Lesson 6 & 7 HW (Open Up Unit 4 - Lesson 6 & 7)" your questions featured a character named "Elena" these questions are both incorrect and unanswerable due to their AI nature. These questions (5 & 6) are baffling, frustrating, inconsistent, and detrimental to the growth and learning of your students. I have attached four pdf files containing the problems within these questions and my proof as to their impossibility.
