An awesome reader sent us this photo from one of the Hoozuki volumes! (It is something we do not have in our scans, so thanks a lot for that!).
I decided to, per request, translate each name, and also the short description from the Japanese Wiki ^^
This is Toukatsu Jigoku/Hell, and its sub-Hells. From the upper left, going clock-wise:
Shideisho (excrements + mud + place):
People who kill birds or deer go here. Excrements are collected and boiled in a pot, and this is fed to the suffering dead, while their bodies are being torn apart and eaten by insects with diamond beaks.
Tourinsho(sword + ring + place):
Where people who have killed with a sword go. Surrounded by 70km iron walls, the dead are attacked by roaring flames rising from the ground, and scalding iron raining from the ceiling. Further, in a forest of sword trees, double-edged swords fall like rain.
Oujukusho (earthenware + completely + place):
The place for people who kill and eat animals. The Hell wardens boil the sinners in iron earthenware pots.
Takusho (many + suffering + place):
People who tie up and beat others, push others off steep cliffs, people who are feared by children, and people who torture others, subjecting them to excruciating pain, go here. Just as the name says, many - one trillion - kinds of suffering are prepared, and the dead suffer in accordance to the suffering they caused others while living.
Anmyousho (darkness + dark + place):
Where people who kill sheep and tortoises go. As the name indicates, it is pitch black, and sinners suffer exposure to black flames and hot winds.
Fukisho (non + pleasure + place):
People who scare animals, making loud noises by blowing trumpet shells, to later kill them, go here. Burning flames roar day and night, and sinners are eaten to the bone by birds with beaks of fire, dogs and foxes.
Gokukusho (extreme suffering place):
The place for people who easily get angry, go on a rampage, break things and selfishly kill others. The burn themselves on red hot iron scattered everywhere, and are continuously revived by wardens who over and over again push them off cliffs.
For the following Hells, nothing other than the name is written down (and I searched outside Wiki, too).
Shuubyousho (mass + sickness + place)
Ryoutetsusho (both + iron + place)
Akujousho (evil + cane + place)
Kokushokusorousho (black + colour + rat + wolf + place)
Iikaitensho (strange/different + strange/different + rotation + place)
Kuhitsusho (suffer + urge + place)
Hachizumabinsho (pot + head + flax/hemp + sideburns + place)
Hichisho (hill + pond + place)
Kuuchuujukusho (air + mid + receive + suffering + place)
I hope that by this, you see why I don’t like to translate the names :)
This was fun though. You are very welcome to send the other ones, and I’ll see if I can get around to translating them. The detailed Japanese Wiki page hasn’t been translated into English, but you may be lucky to find it somewhere else. I don’t know.
It’s pretty darn cruel, huh!
Have a great remaining weekend!
