anon you wanna get me executed huh? you want me to be called out again for varrow on main? you want me to mention the fact that there’s such a familiarity between viren and harrow in their first scene—viren has been in king harrow’s chambers before, early, doesn’t think twice about waking him up because this is important—and then realizes his mistake, gives a soft, sheepish smile, and goes to wait outside—to speak privately? the way he sighs before he says “moonshadow elves” because he knows how dangerous and deadly they are and what a stroke of luck it is that they have some warning they’re coming? that he and harrow dance around committing to saying “they will kill you” at first, because there’s always that bastard hope. the soft way harrow says “don’t look so grim???” and then, later, how viren interrupts harrow’s brooding with, “my king” and then tells harrow not to give up just yet, and how harrow says “i know you don’t [understand]” because dark magic isn’t a stain on viren’s life like it is on harrow, doesn’t understand why this ability would put a strain on their relationship, their trust? and then, later, how viren seems so pleased with himself for finding out a creative solution that while he recognizes it’s uncomfortable, it’s also practical, brilliant, and will save harrow’s life? how he says it’s a matter of pride, not a matter of anything else, how he clearly softens as he says everyone here is willing to die for him—only for harrow to see past that, to ask viren if he would die for his king? and for viren to hesitate and eventually imply that no. he wouldn’t. he would leave harrow to bear this burden alone. he’s not that strong. and that hurts harrow, that his most trusted advisor would just. suggest something that he isn’t willing to do himself. and then viren thinks it over. says he was happy, once. that harrow once thought they would do anything for each other, and viren decides he has to be the man harrow once thought he was—whether or not harrow was right about this isn’t the question. he believed it and that’s enough for viren. so he says goodbye to his kids—hopes they will understand his sacrifice even if they don’t know the whole story. he has to do this. he has to prove harrow right and wrong and above all? protect him. but then, viren says the wrong things, or harrow just isn’t willing to listen because despite whatever bullshit he knows viren is gonna say, going to suggest, he knows viren can just walk away and he’d be fine, he’d get to see his kids again, he’s not in any danger although he broke the dragon egg and pissed off half a continent. and it’s not fair. it’s not fair. so harrow hates viren then, and has to have power over something, anything, but i wouldn’t quite call them enemies—because viren could have refused, could have left. no one would have blamed him. they all look at harrow as a dead man and you can’t reason with the dead. but, viren kneels. there’s defiance, resignation, but he kneels. no, they’re not enemies, but they’ll never be friends again.
