Thinking casually this evening about the hyper-connectivity of The Modern Internet and how it's broiling ever closer towards overt puritanical fascism because a single evangelical group (Exodus Cry) is strong-arming payment processors, and randomly remembered bathroom wall graffiti.
Always anonymous, it was an effervescent and disgusting way to shout into the void. You had "Jesus Saves" next to public contact information of queers. You had slurs and ongoing arguments that lasted until they were literally buffed out of the steel panels or painted over. Depending on the locale, the walls would be thick with the words of people long dead. Carved into the wood, granting them a fleeting immortality in a vacuum. Coated in piss, grime and shit, but still there after all this time.
Long after the words themselves had been wrote over, blacked out, buffed out, coated and pissed on. Something of those people remained. If you took the effort, if you peeled back the swastikas and Sherman Williams, something was writ that said "I was here, I existed, I was real. Remember me, please god".
And.
I don't remember the last time I saw that kind of graffiti.
I don't remember the last time I was in a truck stop and I saw "ON THIS DATE IN HISTORY, JOHN DOE SUCKED MY COCK RIGHT HERE". I don't remember the last time I saw poetry, pictures, art, stickers, arguments so trivial, insults so fucking obtuse in nature that you had to be there, man. Every time I stop for a piss or shit in public now, it's all clean. The walls are bare. They didn't just patch the gloryholes, they replaced the entire fucking wall.
The world has grown sterile and strange and persistent, an entirely liminal space with a corporate logo sign over the door when you walk inside. FFS, the doors don't even chime anymore. And used to, you could at least avoid this gross, brutalist corporatizing by escaping online. You had escape hatches into the unfiltered insanity and beauty of human nature so long as you had a modem.
Maybe the art sucked, maybe the ramblings were incoherent. Maybe it was someone just calling me a [Litany Of Slurs here] for having a different opinion. But in the filth and grime and shit and piss of the world, I was still able to feel something. I could be traumatized and laugh my head off and cry my eyes out in the course of an afternoon.
I had a choice.
We had a choice.
But gone is the bathroom graffiti. Gone is the reality of choice, and in it's place is a convincing funhouse mirror of curation. The paths towards learning new things, being exposed to new ideas and concepts and ways of life have been made clean, clean as those steel walls between the toilets. They put guard rails up so you don't accidently hurt yourself on enlightenment and damnation. The road to hell is paved with good intentions, et al.
It's not just us freaks, geeks and faggots either. That's the really depressing part. The internet has become so grossly corporatized that life saving resources, educational opportunities and more are now being blocked in schools, public libraries and sometimes by demand of the state. You can't do research, you can't find new art, new music, new ideas without a fucking VPN anymore just to access legitimate and legal resources.
And for what? To what end? So some corporate entity can have a 5% increase in earnings that quarter?
Evil isn't always some dude with a cape and a mask cackling. It's not always some elderly senator begging for us to bomb more people. Sometimes, evil is a slow poison that rips the soul out of something. Sure, what's left still walks and talks and smiles, but it's off, man. And so it will limp along until it's violently fish hooked into the Akira-like fleshmass of some corporate interest.
Denying the grime, piss and shit of human existence, denying us a chance to experience the ugly, the mundane, the horrific and the divine in equal measure is to deny us an inherent path towards understanding ourselves. Safely curated corporate spaces don't beget curiosity and questions-it holds a pillow over both of them in their cribs, applying pressure until they stop flailing. Then it tries to sell you the pillow at a discount.
It takes the multi-faceted splendor of the human experience, and shoves it in a sterile room with other similarly-minded people. It bolts the door from the outside, and by the hour begins reducing the oxygen within. It gets sold as some kind of cleanse in one of those instagram ads you see, posted by a robot with art created by AI and at no point in any part of this series of Posting Good Capitalism was a human touch ever involved.
Capitalism kills in meat space, and it's being predictably successful in online spaces as well. They're not just blocking access to DIY HRT and queer history, they're removing any evidence of it from servers. They're seizing your ability to buy drugs (if you want, as a consenting adult). God forbid if you want to look at porn (again, as a consenting adult) anywhere south of the mason-dixon line.
The net isn't just getting cleaned, it's getting made sterile through a slow series of psychological assaults on our very existence.
So before the whole shit-house goes down in flames, a few things.
You gotta keep being openly, loudly fucking weird. If we're going to be subjected to data curation from AI, your posts have to be so openly radioactive they'd make the flesh slip right off an entire advertising department. You gotta make a CEO afraid you're gonna shit on his desk and piss all over his paper work. Who cares if you get bullied or people think you're cringe. Fuck, at least you'll be you. At least you'll be authentic. At least you'll be fucking human and feel something.
And.
If worse comes to worse.
And you find these words somehow, some way, buried beneath the off-white eggshell paint, carved right into the sheetrock above that freshly-cleaned porcelain.
we were here, we existed, we were real. Remember us, please god
"For The Children" Is A Puritan Dogwhistle, And It's Time You Stop Pretending People Who Use It Are Acting In Good Faith.
They're not.
Not once, not ever, nor has any policy, political move, bill, terms of service update or edit to an EULA agreement done under this banner been made with good intentions. "For the safety/good of children" is what's commonly referred to as an "Emotional Appeal", a logical fallacy most of you learn about in grade school. Corporations and politicians, at least in America, will happily strip away your autonomy without a second thought while simultaneously ignoring direct and real dangers that many children face literally every single day. They get away with it too, because gaslighting in American politics works.
There's no grand agenda, no chemical in the water nor some mind control via 5g tower by some shady cabal to harm your children.
You know what kids are really dealing with right now?
There's been 64 school shootings in the US so far just in 2024. The number of kids facing food scarcity or only getting a meal at school (often on the free/reduced price tier) has surged since the 2019 lockdowns. More than 1.2 million kids in school right now are homeless. Schools are underfunded by $150 billion annually, meaning kids don't even have access to the resources necessary to receive a quality education.
These are just the causes I can personally think of that we should be investing in "for the children", and yet as literal bodies pile up every year, kids starve and freeze outside in the elements, I've watched our politicians just shrug and say nothing can be done while actively infringing on the privacy and safety of it's citizens.
Instead of doing something about gun control, we've got militarized police in schools and talk of allowing teachers to carry firearms. Instead of taking my tax money and at least feeding the kids, I've watched them be fed stuff so lacking in nutritional value it might as well be dirt. I've seen politicians move to keep the holocaust out of textbooks and reduce the horrors of war to a few paragraphs-always with this country as the winners, the good guys, the MCU equivalent of the avengers coming to save the day. Don't even get me started on housing those homeless children. If the US doesn't care about kids being shot to death, it sure as hell doesn't care about giving them adequate shelter.
I'm not so dumb as to assume there's a single solution or a single cause to any of this, but I'm also not ignorant to the fact that every single fucking time I've heard "for the safety of kids" or "for the good of the children" used by someone, they're about to do something fucking hideous to all of us and get away with it. They're about to rob you of your rights, your humanity, your name and culture if they think they can. And they're gonna get away with it too, because what kind of monster would ever argue against the safety of kids?
"For the children" is a conservative dog whistle. It always has been, it always will be, and every time you see it used it's time to start harassing the shit out of the people saying it by asking them what they're legitimately, actually, factually doing for kids. Because there's a damn good chance their entire argument is built on a throne of corpses.
PSA: Winterfox/Requires Hate/Benjanun Sriduangkaew/Maria Ying
I'm starting to see recs for Benjanun Sriduangkaew crop up in fandom again, so here's your reminder that Benjanun Sriduangkaew, aka Maria Ying, is actually Winterfox/Requires_Hate, a well-known serial harasser, blackmailer and abuser who decided that the best thing to do with her multimillionaire heiress time and money is to do real and lasting harm to many communities and many writers (especially writers of color) that she saw as rivals.
with how fast things move online right now, I imagine she's banking on people just forgetting everything she pulled: please don't! But even if you won't deny her your attention, at least keep yourself safe and remember that her modus operandi used to be either love bombing people until they let slip something she then blackmailed them with, or literally decades of unhinged harassment.
feel free to share.

Rachel Manija Brown's report: https://rachelmanija.dreamwidth.org/1288081.html
Speaking of media:
We need shlock writing.
We need bad acting, bad directing, shitty scores, and poor editing whether you want to admit it or not. Not because we can point to these things in vicious critique or to feed an ever growing cottage industry of online "critics", but because someone still felt strongly enough about a project and used what resources they had to see it through. That's amazing and beautiful and commendable. They brought something into the world that wasn't there before. The very act of creation is fucking terrifying, and I don't fault anyone for never crossing the finish line.
But some people see all of that, and still do. That's fucking great.
We need terrible, horrible media that we can share with each other in a drunken stupor and laugh at together. Some of the absolute best memories of my life involve getting absolutely fucking blasted, popping in a movie with a friend we knew was going to be bad, and nearly cracking my skull open as I fall off the couch laughing. If it hadn't been for that shitshow of a double feature, that never would have happened. I could kiss the director for giving us that.
We need folks like Yuno Miles, who never would have happened if it wasn't for the absolute insanity of Lil B the Based God and his production style/methods. We need artists to show each other, to smile about for all the wrong reasons, and who inspire us to try the medium ourselves.
We need bad media, which I'm tempted to call anything but. All media can connect to a memory you have that will last you until that last breath. The good, the bad, it's all superlative.
We simply need more stuff that's fearless to try, so that we can be as well when the time comes.
We need to be as fearless as the worst actor, the worst script writer, the worst director, painter, artist, 3d modeler, rapper, wrestler, guitar player, all of it. Because being bad at something is to be unafraid to enter into the hyper-observant media-sphere we surround ourselves with now, who don't even notice the best of our fields.
Being bad is the first step to being great, and being great is the closest we will ever get to god hood and immortality.
Be bad.
Be fearless.
And know you are loved, always.
Drew fan art for the first time in a long while, my first one for Life is Strange, and also for a fanfic by ItsaVikingThing “Not The End of The World” if you haven’t read that yet, go check it out!
so i used something called infinite jukebox to cut out every other beat of this song and

What we sound like to people on a regular basis
I hope that this becomes the next evolution of music.
I want this to be a single
This is the most metal song I’ve ever heard.
It’s back on my dashboard after 3 long months.
This is really good for a study song.
Summoned by @alwaysaprice. Original idea from @gwennovynne.
i appreciate that you are never content to merely deliver on the terrible ideas atted at you, but always extend and improve upon them
Thank you!!! I’m glad that my additions are welcome /o/
…
And then I find out the fanfic hasn’t updated for over a year.
WE CAN ALL RELATE TO THIS POST
Yep lol
This happened to me where it wasn’t updated for a year, I left a comment anyway.
It was updated the next week.
Comment and leave kudos. It does so much for a writers confidence.

I hate that you photoshopped out the right arm of the dog to enhance the realism
“we were born wrong”
Syd: "Jobs! That's still a thing, people are still doing that?" Olivia: "Before the pandemic, it was already so hard to find a job!" Syd: "But yeah, now with everything shut down, getting a job is just so much more competitive." Olivia: "I applied to work at Corn Dog Shack and they rejected my application before I even fully submitted it." Syd: "I tried to apply to this really prestigious job in the Ukraine where this man wires me thirty dollars and I send him pictures of my toes--" Olivia: "Thirty dollars? That's almost a whole avocado!" Syd: "--but then he told me I'm kind of on the older side to be working." Olivia: "To be working in general?" Syd: "Yeah, he said, um, 'Yucky yucky, too old! You should be retired or dead.'" Olivia: "How old are you again?" Syd: "Twenty... five?" Olivia: "Oof, yeah, that's a little old to be female." Syd: "I'm thinking about going missing!" Olivia: "Oh! Have you heard back from that online gig you were applying for that pays so much more than a restaurant wage?" Syd: "Oh, unemployment?" Olivia: "That's what it's called!" Syd: "No, they sent me this email that says, 'Sorry, no money left! If you'd like to reapply, don't.'" Olivia: "How do people our age, like, have money?" Syd: "Most of them worked their way up to having wealthy parents when they were born." Olivia: "Right! We should have done that." Syd: "We were born wrong!"
i feel like this thing where people are going stir-crazy and want something to do less than a week after being explicitly ordered to stay home under threat of disease and death kind of blows a hole in that “if we give people universal basic income everybody will just be lazy and won’t want to work” talking point
The number of artists, writers and musicians dumping output for free to cheer us up is right there in the “people will do productive things because the things need to be done” department.
I have a feeling this will become iconic in due time.
I’ve watched this for like a dozen loops and I still crack up every time
[Singing] T-Birds: Well-a, well-a, well-a– Tell me more, tell me more, did'ya get very far? Pink Ladies: Tell me more, tell me more– Jules (in time, astonishingly): Does he look like a bitch?
I hope that this is the last remaining piece of media that aliens find after we destroy our planet.
