When people pull out the “but she wore white makeup in her movie” or “many women lightened their skin” argument for the official re-design, it’s like… you’re not being a good Disney fan if you’re completely ignoring the context of the movie.  

Reasons the white-wash re-design right now doesn’t work:

A) the established appearance of the character they created.  And they had already decided not to incorporate that page of history into her appearancewhen they first made this movie.   She has an established skin tone.   Not to mention, kids don’t really know much about history.  All they’ll notice is that Mulan is a “Disney princess,” yet even she wasn’t considered perfect enough without her skin being lightened from how it appeared in the movie.

B) their treatment of other historical characters and settings- they ignore accuracy even when there were complaints- like w/Jasmine and Pocahontas- and no one complained about Mulan’s skin tone not being light enough, previously.  Why exactly would Disney, without even an explanation, suddenly use historical accuracy as a reason for changing Mulan’s appearance?  And

C) the preferences and personality of the character they created- one who defies social expectations (it’s hard to envision Mulan sitting indoors, trying to cultivate a lighter skin tone).   Mulan is not a generic individual, she has a very defined and strong personality.    

Ignoring this when it was a main aspect of her movie- when she even sang a song about how uncomfortable she felt in the makeup and matchmaker dress- it’s like pairing Belle with Gaston in merchandise, “just because it happened in the movie once.”   In spite of Belle hating that, in spite of how uncomfortable she felt with him.    Why is it okay to do that sort of thing to Mulan, to give those sort of excuses on behalf of Disney for Mulan’s change, when it would never fly with fans if they did that to Belle?

(Also I really really love The Snow Queen fable, and Gerda in particular. I knew it by heart when i was little and i had this beautifully illustrated book with the story. I’m really sad that they’ve decided to change their names. Gerda and Kai are so awesome.)

Aaaaaaall right, so, HERE is my take on what could have been an alternate concept for Disney’s upcoming Frozen movie. All the usual disclaimers about how I have no problem with Disney itself, I just think there are places other than Europe to set an animated movie, and the This Could Have Been Frozen project is a nice way to stretch the design muscles and give a little love where it is well past due.

I know lots of people count Kuzco as a South American princess, but, well, I don’t, so I thought putting something set in the Andes (specifically the Argentina stretch) would be something fun, and different, and give lots of opportunities for bright colors and impressive, snowy expanses.

The Snow Queen is a Scandinavian tale. Scandinavians (such as Danish and Swedes) are supposed to look white with blonde hair, which is what Disney’s designs are. I’m not trying to be racist here, but I don’t want the designs changed just for the sake of having non-white characters in a story that originates from a country of white-skinned people.

Seriously, political correctness and white people shaming have gotten out of hand…

and btw, it’s a fairy tail all on it’s own that majority of people who live there are blonde blue eyed, etc. most people have brown hair, surprise. Oh and also? at this point in reality, dark people live in those countries too. You do realize that those countries are not somehow exempt from dark people, right? I can only imagine how alienating it must be for a not-blonde, blue-eyed ~aryan dream~ that’s Swedish/Danish/Norwegian/Finnish to hear all this shit thrown around about how people from their country are SUPPOSED to look. Just like how gross it is when people assume I can’t be American because I’m not white.

Again: Disney has a history of transplanting stories from one culture into another and  into animals (Oliver and Company for example). I have a feeling that if these were animals, you wouldn’t be so quick to defend how the animals weren’t staying true to its “Scandinavian” roots. 

look inside yourself simba. figure out why you’re upset about dark people in your “white” fairy tale. and not the lions in your hamlet.

Okay, everyone, gather around. It’s time for some schooling on the Harry Potter Fandom and some of the greatest fandom wank in its history (and considering that this is the HP fandom, that’s saying something). With the release of the City of Bones trailer, there’s been a whole lot of The Mortal Instruments on my dash, and consequently, Cassandra Clare. Now a bit of a disclaimer, I’m not trying to change anyone’s opinion on Clare’s work. If you like TMI or any of her other series, then that’s perfectly fine, and it in no way makes you a bad person or wrong. But with the recent deletion of a lot of the Cassandra Claire fandom wank pages, I feel like before people give her another dime, they need to be informed or refreshed on all the crap she has pulled as a BNF in the HP fandom.
