@here4change
it is constantly amazing and terrifying to me the amount of propaganda that is necessary in order to sustain capitalism
I'm not saying this to sound so smart and evolved, I'm absolutely including myself in this. I am constantly in awe of how much I have had to unlearn and how much more I need to unlearn. The first time I saw someone criticizing the nuclear family model, I was completely taken aback, and now I fully recognize the ways in which this social family model perpetuates abuse, poverty, and neglect.
And the capitalist class really has us believing that the products we consume have something to say about our identity. It's fucking wild.
The United States is a country that believes that the availability of 27 different types of Oreos is somehow an indication of freedom while people starve to death on the streets and die because they can't afford a medication whose price is artificially inflated.
The idea that someone can earn (and therefore deserves) millions or billions of dollars is absolutely asinine! The myth of the "self-made millionaire" is an outright lie! And yet both are bedrocks of American culture.
Minimum Wage should be indexed to 2% of a city’s median rent.
And here’s why:
Housing costs are the single biggest financial burden facing Americans today.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development define being cost-burdened as spending more than a third of your income on rent. By that definition, over half of the households in this country are cost-burdened. Source
If we want people to be able to afford to live in cities and not get priced out, we have to make a two pronged approach. One is to build houses towards all incomes and price ranges, not just luxury condos. And the other is a robust wage floor so people can actually afford to live.
Fight for 15 is doing an amazing job and I love them, but we have to realize that is quite a few places, $15/hr still isn’t enough to live on.
Which is where the 2% comes in. It allows a minimum wage that is flexible with regards to the costs of living.
And it wasn’t plucked out of thin air either:
Rent should be a third of a persons income, or to restate the equation: income should be three times a person’s rent.
And since a full time job is 8 hrs a day / 40 hrs a week / 160 hrs a month.
So when you do the math, the ideal hourly minimum wage as a percentage of rent works out to around 1.875%, which for ease of calculation is 2%.
Example minimum wages under a 2% rent rule:
San Francisco: $67.40/hr
New York City: $56/hr
Boston: $55.94/hr
Los Angeles: $27/hr
Houston: $21.38/hr
St. Louis: $18.22/hr
Billings, MT: $17.16/hr
I. That puts San Fran’s cost-of-living issue into perspective.
Seattle, which has $15/$16 min wage: $40.14
Capitalism is killing the world’s wildlife populations, not humanity
“From carbon emissions to ecological footprints, the richest 10% of people are having the greatest impact. Furthermore, there is no recognition that the effects of climate and biodiversity collapse are overwhelming felt by the poorest people first – the very people who are contributing least to the problem.”
Glad this article came out.
I’m very disappointed in mainstream environmentalist organizations not identifying issues in our economic system, but rather blaming it on individuals.
Environmentalists: Stop using plastic bags and straws!!
The People: Sure, but like also hold the 1% and corporations accountable because they produce 70% of pollution that is causing climate change.
Corporations: *quickly pays of "scientists" to focus environmental health campaigns that blame our global climate crisis on average people not being woke and vegan*
Environmentalists: See! *points at paid off "research"* It's all because people aren't vegan!!
The People: wtf!?!?
US Gov: No tolerance for immigrants coming over the border. Go back to your own countries!
Latin Americans: We can't because you fucked them up so bad.
US Gov: Well, good luck getting over our new wall and past our military sized border patrol.
Latin Americans: wtf?!?!
US Gov: If you do manage, we will take you kids, put them in cages, and make sure you never see them again! Also, we'll put you in concentration camps just for fun.
Yes, I know tumblr is a blogging platform but I still want a blog website. :) But I digress. This is the official blog release date. Getting my lazy @$$ to actually write has been the hardest part, but I am getting there. ✍🏼
Stay strong y'all! ✊🏽✊🏿✊🏾
