     Fingers, not too long, not too short, his favorite shape and size, spotless and lacking in even visible veins… curl inward in frustration. A cycle. Oh, does he know about cycles. And yet in the wake of their advice the Mirror Man seems to have become fixated.  “ … If I go mad… it’s because of people like you. ”  He laughs through his temper.  “ You JUST said my nose needed ‘work’– so– how? You must have seen something about it that you didn’t like. I know you did. So that means there’s something you’d prefer– You aren’t BLIND– ”  Another interruption of that deeper voice, this time they speak in unison.  “    So you have your own opinion… and I have my little journey of self improvement. ”  He tries to laugh the voice off, brushing down his chestnut hair, if you could ever see it.   “ And all I have to do~… is get that opinion out of you and then you can leave it to the artist to decide if it’s a valid criticism. Okay? Now… what is wrong with my nose? Answer me. ”   If there was any subject before this nose problem, he can’t remember it.

frankly,  you  didn’t  want  to  give  him  an  answer.  for  no  reason  that  was  malicious,  however.  it  just  began  to  unsettle  you  how  fixated  he  had  become,  how  quickly  he  disregarded  all  else.  after  a  moment’s  hesitation,  annoyance  fades  to  the  beginning  of  concern;  your  face  portrays  this.  “  why  are  you  trying  so  hard  ?  ”  the  question  parts  the  lips  in  a  very  genuine  manner.  you  seemingly  break  your  stone-cold  character.  “  listen.  sir  ?  i  understand  what  i  said  might  have  upset  you.  but...  you’re  trying  very  hard  to  get  my  validation  when  you  don’t  even  need  it.  ”

your  face  is  that  of  a  saddened  pup.  so  much  emotion  conveyed  in  just  a  stare.  this  was  the  raw  you.  “  you  don’t  even  need  it,  dude.  not  mine  or  anyone  else’s.  like...  i  don’t  know  if  something  happened,  maybe  when  you  were  younger...  ?  but  you  don't  need  to  chase  the  validation  of  these  people.  it’s  okay  to  be  flawed,  it  really  is.  ”  even  if  this  didn’t  quell  his  temper,  you  give  your  best  attempt  at  a  half - hearted,  awkwardly - charming  half  smile  and  hunch  your  shoulders  only  a  pinch.

“  i  know,  it  must  sound  pretty  silly,  huh  ?  ”  a  demon  who  only  wanted  to  be  humane  was  something  straight  from  a  storybook.  but  there  was  more  to  you  than  most  knew,  and  you  were  still  discovering  yourself  every  day,  as  well.  no  one  had  seen  your  defection  coming.  your  father  said  this  path  would  lead  to  your  grave.  the  thought  shows  as  a  moment  of  weakness  on  the  face.  “  i-i  mean...  i  really  just...  ”  

it  was  hard  for  you  to  move  along  with  your  words.  something  had  you  choked  up,  so  you  bite  your  tongue.  a  look  of  wariness,  of  humility:  had  you  said  too  much  ?  body  language  turns  tense,  uneasy,  as  knuckles  clenched  to  slack,  nervous  fists.  it  was  too  early  in  this  encounter  to  tell  if  you  had  been  in  good  company.

“  can  you  keep  it  down?    i’m  trying  to  SLEEP.  ”    speaking  so  casually    (  and  TIREDLY  )    as  if  allowing  a  soul  STRAIGHT  FROM  HELL  into  the  afterlife  in  its  essentiality  would  be  not  so  much  of  a  BIG  DEAL.    however,  you’d  proven  your  TRUSTWORTHINESS  ——  and  even  if  you  hadn’t  ——  you  hadn’t  done  ANYTHING  to  betray  the  trust  of  the  seireitei  thus  far.    everything  left  up  to  SPECULATION,  as  it  were  with  you.    you  proceed  to  TURN  OVER  in  the  spot  you  had  laid,  seeming  to  use  your  WILD  BLACK  LOCKS  as  mufflers  to  your  ears.

he isn’t  unfamiliar  with seeing demons  –  not even  close  to being unfamiliar with it.  however,  a lot of them … tended to  look  less human.   his own husband was quite similar to  them,   that was was intrigued him in the first place.  no matter the difference   in physical appearance,  or the seemingly  uncomfortable  nature,  taishakuten was not so easily frightened.   he’d  faced  difficult situations before,   but this one  –  he wouldn’t say that it was the most  scary  demon he’d ever faced.   the  tough  act didn’t bother him at all,  another thing he was  all  too used to.   

 ❝   you’re so  precious.   ❞    a light laugh follows,  hardly mocking  —  just entertained.   ❝   you don’t need to  look   so paranoid.  i’m  not here to hurt you.  ❞

“  PRECIOUS  ”   certainly  wasn’t  the  word  you  had  been  looking  for.    A  DEMON  ABOVE  DEMONS,    were  you.    a  BLANK  STARE  is  all  you  can  give.    how  the  HEART  in  your  was  GROWLING;    a  GRIMACE  tugs  your  lip,  showcasing  a  set  of  sharp  incisors  and  prominent  FANG.    the  FIRE  in  your  blood  comes  to  SMOLDER.  

“  i’m  not  meant  to  be  precious.  ”    and  how  TELLING  your  voice  is,  how  casually  saddened,  how  FRAGMENTED  OF  A  GIRL  you’d  been.    the  look  on  your  face  portrays  just  how  unexpected,  almost  PAINFULLY  AWKWARD  his  statement  had  been  to  you.    “  how  do  i  know  i  can  TRUST  your  words?    how  do  i  know  this  isn’t  a  LIE?  ”

“  if    you’re    going    to    talk    to    me    like    i’m    a    baby,    then    should    i    just    call    you    pappy?  ”    perhaps    it    was    a    full-hearted,    genuine    question...    or    perhaps    it    was    a    question    purely    meant    to    antagonize    him.    with    your    specific    tone    of    voice    upon    delivery,    one    may    never    really    know.    a    blank    stare    that    left    you    more    or    less    unreadable    to    even    those    with    more    experience.    

a    chuff    -    turned    -    chuckle    breaks    the    silence    and    you    wave    a    hand    in    a    coy    manner.    “  i’m    just    kidding.    respect    your    elders    and    all,    right?  ”    the    air    lets    up,    as    it    hadn’t    done    just    moments    ago.

“   i    don’t    really    do...    gangs.  ”    a    voice    as    sweet    as    honey    could    easily    pierce    like    a    poisonous    dagger    in    an    instant.    you    had    teetered    on    the    line    of    agitation    since    he’d    made    your    acquaintance.    there    was    something    you    just    didn’t    quite    like    about    him;    it    was    innate,    instinctual,    and    kept    you    on    your    toes.    

the    silence    that    follows    was    piercing,    as    was    your    stare.    eyes    more    reminiscent    of    a    doe’s    or    serpent’s    depending    on    perspective;    one    could    get    lost    in    those    eyes.    as    the    silence    starts    to    ring,    a    hand    comes    up    swiftly    and    rubs    at    the    back    of    your    neck    in    a    coy    manner,    and    suddenly    your    air    is    awkward,    forward,    and    friendly    ---    something    it    hadn’t    been    just    a    moment    before.    “  i    mean!    it’s    kind    of    just    a    preference    thing,    i    guess?    i’m    kind    of    a    loner,    if    i’m    honest.  ”

“    it’s    okay    if    you    don’t    trust    me,    because    i    trust    me.    ”    and    for    you,    that    was    plenty.    you    weren’t    much    for    relying    on    the    faith    of    others    because,    for    a    very    long    time,    all    you    ever    had    was    yourself.    

there    were    things    within    this    world    that    were    hard    to    understand,    evils    that    everyone    was    bound    to    fall    to    by    one    chance    or    another.    but    this    didn’t    stop    you    from    being    the    dying    light    that    raged    against    the    faint    of    night.    you    did    this    for    yourself    before    you    did    this    for    anyone    else;    as    you    held    him    safely    within    hands,    making    way    toward    their    destination.    you    owed    this    to    yourself:    being    gentle.
