Twice in the past week I've heard cis people make the joke that their voice sounds different because they've started taking estrogen. It boils my blood. I want them to know how much it hurts, I want them to know how it feels to be afraid to speak in a women's restroom for fear of being mistaken for a man, how it feels to have a voice that makes their skin crawl. I want them to know this pain and feel ashamed for their genuinely embarrassing lack of understanding of what trans women go through every fucking day. Or even how our HRT works at all. I want to tell them "that was a really stupid thing you just said" but I don't. I stay silent. I stay silent because I know that if I speak out no one else will take my side. It burns me from the inside and it's getting real fucking hard to ignore.
