The sound of gentle snuffling rouses you from your sleep, the early morning sun breaking the horizon creeping into the clearing. Using the weight of your body, you thrust into her, moving your hips in tandem to push harder. You climb into your truck and drive around to your trailer, turning off the engine and sliding out to make your way around to the hitch. Your hands fumble with a task that should have been easy, your fingers trembling as you lock the ball in place.Â
Inside the barn, you find CBâs tack and haul it to the trailer, loading it up before you come back for him. You frown when you get to his stall, finding it empty. You know you locked him up last night, so where was he?Â
You make your way outside, turning around the side of the barn, scratching your head. The cattle in the pasture lift their heads, watching you with bored eyes. Everyone can sense something is going on. Emma isnât speaking to you. Jennaâs avoiding you. Theyâre both avoiding each other. Youâd try and fix it if you could. But you have no idea what to do, who to turn to. The closest relationships youâd made in the short time you were on set were the very two people whoâd got you in this entire mess.Â
Briefly, you consider calling your Mom. But you know thereâs nothing she can tell you that you donât already know.Â
You canât have both of them, she sing-songs in your head, you have to choose.Â
Itâs later that morning when Jenna ducks around the catering table to stop crossing paths with you, you see red.Â

Jenna's had so much to drink she barely notices as you sidle in next to her, so close your shoulders almost touch.Â

You grip Emmaâs hand under the table and pray she doesnât see it too.Â

âI didnât think you were.â You say. You contemplate turning back around, knocking on Emmaâs door and asking for a nightcap. This seems like trouble. Something in you resists. You watch as she turns to the staircase and grasps at the railing. She wobbles slightly, unsteady.Â

âIâm fine.â She says. You knew she was going too hard on the whiskey. You should have stopped her. You inch forward, press your hands to her back so she doesnât slip. She jerks you off.Â

You blink her back into view. Her eyes are closed, her lips red and swollen from yours. You brush her dark hair out of her face, press your noses together. Your heartbeat steadies.Â
The parking lot light flickers, and you remember where you are.Â
Reality comes crashing in. You swallow, retract slightly from her as you glance up to Emmaâs apartment. Wonder if she can see you doing exactly what you said you wouldnât.Â
Jenna doesnât let you go far. Her hands around your biceps, trying to keep you close.Â
âCome home with me.â She murmurs. Her eyes are impossibly dark, so longing as she stares up into yours.Â
You want to, so badly. But you can smell the booze on her breath. On yours too. And then you think of Emma.Â
You retract slightly, voice low.Â
âI canât.âÂ
âPlease. I want to take you home with me.â She begs. Her pupils are so wide you canât even see the pretty brown of her chocolate-eske irises anymore.Â
âI canât. Emma.â Is all you say, pleading, like youâre begging her to understand.Â
It jump-starts something in her. The humanity is back, the lust-crazed fog that had taken over lifting. Something shifts in her expression. Her pupils adjust, and she withdraws her vice-like grip on you.Â
âRight.â She says, âEmma.âÂ
She shuffles back away from you, almost falling. You reach out for her, not wanting her to hit the pavement but she brushes you off. Not moments ago you were as close to her as youâd ever been. Now, itâs like your touch scalds her.Â
âIâm sorry.â She says, and she sounds like she means it. She hangs a moment, like she wants to say something more. Her words fail her, âIâve got to go.âÂ
And then she leaves you standing there in the parking lot alone, Emma on your mind and the ghost of Jenna's kiss on your lips.
You should have seen this coming. When you two first got together, you told her it was one of your greatest fears. She brushed you off, assured you that it would never come to be. Yet, here you are, sitting all alone on the night of your anniversary, crying in your bedroom while the abandoned dinner you planned sat untouched on the dining room table.
Again, you think, she blew me off again. The last time this happened, you ended up ignoring Jenna for a week, whilst she planned an extravagant way to woo you back. Although, you wouldn't call her kidnapping you and taking you to a remote cabin to spend time with you alone, normal, it was adorable.
Drifting off to your thoughts, you remember why you were crying in the first place. You had been aimlessly scrolling through Instagram stories, trying to pass time and wait for your brunette lover. You had ended up scrolling to Jenna's most recent co-star, Percy's, story. On his story was a picture of your girlfriend, sitting across from him in a booth at a restaurant, caption reading, 'love this girl :)'. You had felt some way about him, and previously confronted Jenna about Percy, only to be told, "Babe, he's one of my best friends. Don't you think you're being delusional", "You can't control who I can and can't be friends with", or your personal favorite, "God, why can't you just let me be?"
She may have apologized about each encounter, but that doesn't mean you have forgotten about it. You got so sick of the world claiming something that was yours. You got sick of only being able to love her in private, while others got to indulge in her existence. The sneaking around may have been the only fun part. The feeling giving a sense of an adrenaline rush, shocking the both of you to your core.
The downside would be the lying to you, watching from the sidelines as she gets flirted with, and her having to act like your existence means nothing to her. You feel underappreciated, overlooked, and completely discarded in the relationship. Deciding to let it be known, you decide to text the short brunette about having a talk.

K. All you got back was a K. That was where the under appreciation kicked in. The short replies, quick phone and face-time calls, the bored and dry tone she used whenever she spoke to you. You decided she wasn't worth making you feel like that anymore.
You hear a jingle of keys right outside your apartment door, followed by the turning of the knob and opening of the door. The footsteps down the hall are quiet and precise with the step pattern, almost as if the person does not want their presence to be known.
You lay there in silence as you allow her to get shower and get changed, mentally preparing you for the talk that was inevitably going to happen. Feeling her slide into bed next to you, you turn to your left side to face her.
The look of surprise on her face is enough to make you want to laugh, seeing as she thought you were asleep the entire time.
You sit up in the bed, lean over to turn the bedside lamp on, and for the first time all day she sees your face. Red, stricken with tears, puffy. All signs of you crying. Then the guilt hits her, she realizes how terrible she's been treating you.
"Um..." you say, voice betraying your emotions, as you'd tried to remain stoic. "I need to talk to you...." She nods in confirmation and seeking for your continuation, "about us."
Her face begins to pale as she asks the question you've been contemplating, "Are you breaking up with me?" You sit in silence, your hesitance giving her an answer.
"Can I ask why?" She says in a monotone voice. This. This is what had made you upset with her in the first place. You feel anger as you think about the question.
"Why?.....Maybe because lately you've been treating me like shit. " Her jaw drops from the way you speak, but you don't care enough to notice. Completely fed up with her behavior, you rant about every problem you've ever had. "You don't care enough to call or even fucking text me if you're gonna be late or not come at fucking all, you blow me off to hang out with Percy Hynes- fucking- White, even though I have repeatedly told you how uncomfortable he makes me." You choke an entirely new set of tears as your anger gets the best of you. "You don't even acknowledge my presence half of the time, yet, for some reason, I continue to devote my entire being to making sure that you are comfortable, and happy in this relationship and you don't even care about me."
She stares at you in silence, a blank stare on her face, and you decide you don't want to be there anymore. You turn to her, taking it all in one last time. Her perfect skin, beautiful freckles that dusted her face, warm chocolate eyes simmering in self-pity. Her full pink lips sat staring at you, yearning for you to kiss them one last time. But you didn't. Instead you got up, threw on a hoodie of yours, put on your shoes and grabbed your keys.
You looked at her and said "I'll be back tomorrow morning. I expect you out of my apartment by Monday morning. It was Friday night. That gave her more than enough time get her stuff and leave.
You walk downstairs with slow steps, hoping she's right behind you, chasing and pleading with you not to go. But she's not. You walk out the door and to your car. Although getting in the driver's seat was a very hard thing to do, you did it. And the relief you felt when you pulled off was amazing.
The pressure had been released.
