In medieval culture, an event like a royal christening is not a private party; it’s the public social event of the year. To not invite any person of rank to such an event is a deadly insult.

Maleficent is certainly someone you wouldn’t want at a party, but she’s also someone powerful enough that only a fool would ever dare treat her with such blatant disrespect. The only way the King and Queen could possibly have gotten away with not inviting Maleficent was to not invite any of the fairies at all; inviting the other fairies and excluding her is explicitly taking sides in the conflict between the fairy factions.

Which means they made themselves her sworn enemies, and she responded by treating them as such from then on. If you actually get into analyzing the social dynamics of the scene, it’s very clear that Maleficent was willing to show mercy at first by giving the King and Queen a chance to apologize for their disrespect to her. She doesn’t curse Aurora until after she gives them that chance and they throw it back in her face with further disrespect.

And yeah, if the King and Queen had done the properly respectful thing and invited her, Maleficent would have given Aurora a scary awesome present. Moreover so would the other fairies, because at that point both sides would be using it as an opportunity to show off and one-up each other. What they gave her before Maleficent showed up was basically just trivial party favors by fairy standards.

Like that episode was very good about addressing toxic behaivor from people who are supposedly woke or whatever.

Subject: Vote NO on the EARN IT Act

Senator Graham claims the EARN IT act is to prevent online exploitation of children, but by requiring a security backdoor to all phones, computers, and household devices -- even smart homes! -- it may do the exact opposite. Hackers and criminals are notoriously good at finding ways to exploit any such loophole.

In fact, what it does do is violate privacy. I am very concerned about this.

It hands the keys of American citizens' personal data and private communications to the police, the Feds, Attoney General Barr (no wonder he's so excited about this bill), and any unscrupulous members of the administration who have found ways to exploit data harvesting and psyops, which our legal system hasn't caught up with yet. Can you think of anyone like that?

Meanwhile, the Senate is mostly full of people older than you who are out of touch about the ways the internet and data are used and abused. So most of them are clueless and don't see the full ramifications of the bill.

For example, I worry for the safety of anyone who protests the police, if the police are given more digital spying powers to abuse by the EARN It Act. I am white, but I am not oblivious. I saw how many BLM protestors died or disappeared within a few years of Ferguson.

As someone whose family includes Jews killed by Nazis, I am very, VERY wary of handing the government more tools to collect data and spy on citizens right now. The US already feels far too Weimar Republic to me, my Mom, and other relatives. We've been sounding alarms since before the 2016 election, just like the epidemiologists schooling us in the history of the 2018 pandemic. LISTEN TO US. We don't want to go through this again. Maybe blacks or Muslims or Hispanics are the chief targets this time instead of Jews, but let's shut down those detention camps and reverse course before it's too late, okay?

In short, I think the EARN It Act moves the United States further along the road towards a fascist surveillance state. NO. NO no no no NO.
