Olive: "Bruno is Orange" by Hop Along, Queen Ansleis. "And I know you know I know, I can't control thoughts of things I needed, I believe everybody needs some encouragement. Look inside and see what you're becoming."
Rootgrove: "Meet Me in the Woods" by Lord Huron. "I took a little journey to the unknown, And I come back changed, I can feel it in my bones, I fucked with forces that our eyes can't see, Now the darkness got a hold on me, Oh, the darkness got a hold on me."
Another newleaf has begun in ShoreClan. ShoreClan does not have enough medicine cats. Stonestar is still wrought with grief over the loss of Limefold and having a hard time picking himself up to perform his usual duties. Annoyed, Petrifern insists then that her daughters warrior ceremony take place. Skyrock has taught her well and it will help at least one member of the clan focus on things other than the current apprentices until Toadswirl's apprentice comes of age.
ShoreClan hasn't seen an apprentice graduate early before the impromptu ceremony Stonestar holds specifically for Emberpaw. Even she is surprised. Unbelievably proud, but surprised. Skyrock influenced her to be friendly toward others, to avoid violence, follow the status quo, and think deeply about things that have happened. She's become an excellent swimmer. Stonestar appreciated the cat's exemplar as well. From this day on, Emberpaw is now known as Emberstreak.
Of course, Flamepaw and Burntpaw now feel like they've fallen behind their sister by miles. They've always been closer to each other than her. Flamepaw especially is feeling competitive. Burntpaw feels like he keeps getting stuck with kitsitting tasks.
ê•€
Gingerstrata decides she and Palecore will focus on training the apprentices. Tensions are high with Flamepaw and Burntpaw, they have a hard time understanding why Emberstreak got to graduate and they haven't. Burntpaw is quick to tell Flamepaw he is clearly not ready and his brother prickles up at him. They turn to their mother for answers. She tried to dissmiss it by telling them that clearly Emberstreak was ready and they are not. Maybe if they focus on training, they can be ready sooner. Neither of them liked that answer and could only focus on their perceived unfairness of the situation. She gave up on trying to resolve it and Palecore felt disappointed by the way Petrifern handled that.
ê•€
Since Palecore had other duties to work on, Toadswirl once again took Gingerstrata on an herb-gathering patrol, hoping to talk more about his kits. They are finding a lot of blooming herbs and Toadswirl almost wishes thy had taken more warriors to gather them all. Gingerstrata is proving to be a big help. Until he starts having an allergic reaction to the tree pollen. Toadswirl is not annoyed, but he uses this to his advantage by instructing Gingerstata to gather the more pungent herbs that he can't smell. The two have an effective herb-gathering mission. They don't end up talking much about the kits after all, but when they return, Wildkit is in the medicine cat den.
ê•€
Skyrock takes Emberstreak on her first hunting mission. Sandtooth comes as well. As they are on their patrol, Emberstreak explains a strange idea for squirrel hunting. Trying to encourage her to, Skyrock says she should go for it. Her idea is to bait the squirrels down the trees with food and then snipe them when they come down. It's a little tedious. It involves a bit of relocating. But it works. And the team is able to bring a substantial amount of fresh kill back to camp. Both of the older cats feel impressed and Skyrock feels especially proud of her former apprentice.

Frogface leads border patrol with Sablecrust and Hor Kai by his side. Hor Kai sees two GrackleClan kits playing close to the border. He wouldn't forgive himself is something were to happen to those kits. So he asks Frogface if he and Sablecrust can return them home. Frogface agrees. Relations with GrackleClan improve. The other two cats are impressed with how gentle Hor Kai is with the kits.

Ghoststar and Frozenpelt take Shadowpaw on border patrol.
"UGHHHH, is this really a warrior's duties or are you just making me do stupid stuff??"
"Yes it is, Shadowpaw." Ghoststar grumbled, glancing back as his annoyed apprentice sharpened his claws against a tree. "Border patrols are one of the most important warrior duties, right next to feeding the clan."
"But no other clans live here!!" Shadowpaw whined, dragging long, dramatic lines into the bark. "What's the point in keeping up borders when there's nobody to fight?"
Ghoststar's ears pinned back and he opened his mouth, but Frozenpelt spoke first, trying to smile as his tail twitched incessantly. "Fighting other cats isn't why we keep our borders marked. Do you know what would happen if we didn't patrol around the territory?"
Shadowpaw huffed, plopping into a sit and batting at the fallen leaves. "We'd have a lot less to do?"
"Other creatures would move in, we may not be able to help cats in need, and we would miss incoming threats until they're already on top of the camp." Frozenpelt stated matter-of-factly. "Border patrol isn't about keeping other cats out, it's about surveying the territory to always be in the know about what's happening on our land, whether good or bad. We could find a fox hunting a kit that needs help, or we could find a new basking spot to relax at sunhigh. But we won't find either of those sitting around camp all day."
Shadowpaw paused for a moment, blinking in sudden thought. Then he grumbled and stood, shaking himself off as he padded ahead of the two. "Shouldn't there not even be any threats because of Greystar? Tallfog told me 'n sis he gave us a paradise or something."
Frozenpelt sighed, but a purr rose in his chest as he followed behind. "Greystar did drive off anything that would hurt us, that's true. But that doesn't mean some things don't slip through the cracks. Predators are deterred from our territory, not shut out from it. It's our job to make sure our safety is assured, even if we can rest easier than other cats."
…Ghoststar lagged behind, looking at Shadowpaw with furrowed brows as he sniffed at trees and shrubs. There was something…off about him. Something familiar. Like catching the scent of the same fox in a different burrow. It was why he'd made himself Shadowpaw's mentor, to try and figure out what it was. Something that whispered in his ear, hung over him like a cloud, and he couldn't shake the tugging in his heart that reminded him of…of…
"Ghoststar?"
He blinked slowly and raised his head to find Frozenpelt beside him, tail hovering over his back and a comforting warmth to his gaze. "You doing ok? You've been quieter than usual this past moon."
"…Have I?" he finally sighed, deflating a bit. "Sorry."
"No no, there's no need to apologize, I've just been worried about you. It's my job as deputy to make sure you're fit to lead, after all."
Frozenpelt purred in amusement and Ghoststar couldn't help a small smile, but his gaze drifted back down to the leaves, a maelstrom swirling in his mind. He was silent again, thinking, for so long that Frozenpelt quietly stepped in front of him, ears drooping slightly.
"…Is it Thistlepaw?"
By now, they knew eachother well enough that Frozenpelt instantly caught the flinch in Ghoststar's eyes, and he sighed, sitting down at his leader's side. "Losing an apprentice is rough on anyone, even a leader. You can let yourself grieve him, Ghoststar. I know you had high hopes for him, it's perfectly understandable what you're feeling."
Ghoststar stood, frozen in place, staring at his paws. Thistlepaw had been…very tough to train, especially after he and Blizzardpaw's mother passed. He was rude, disobeyed orders, and seemed to delight in tormenting others, but…Ghoststar had seen the makings of a good cat in him. He remembered the nights he'd found Thistlepaw sitting on the edge of camp, staring into the trees, and the surprisingly deep conversations that followed. He was a troubled kit, but one that just needed the right guidance, and Ghoststar was willing to put in the work needed to help him grow.
And then came the night that Frozenpelt showed up at his den with a shaking, sobbing Blizzardpaw. All of that hope for change, all his work to make something better, shattered like the splintering snap of a rotten tree branch.
…But that wasn't what bothered him the most right now.
"Frozenpelt?"
Frozenpelt smiled as Ghoststar raised his head, but it faltered at the hopeless look in his eyes. "Yes?"
"Do you think we're doing enough?"
That caught the deputy off guard enough to erase his smile entirely, and he tilted his head a bit in confusion. "…What?"
"Greyclan is supposed to be a paradise. We made it a paradise with our own paws, held up by the support of the mountain, free of threats and full of life."
Ghoststar paused, trembling claws sinking into the ground. "But it hasn't been a paradise for a long time, has it? Not since the massacre-most cats here weren't even alive to see what this clan is supposed to be. Horrible things keep happening, even though were doing what we're supposed to. Thistlepaw, your mother-the fox that attacked Hailthrush a few moons ago shouldn't have even been near the territory. Gorse…"
The name caught in Ghoststar's throat, and he swallowed it back down with a shudder, forcing himself to stop shivering. "We're running Greyclan as it always has been. We're gifting the Tunnels when necessary. We're doing everything right. So…why is our paradise fading? Why is the mountain abandoning us?"
…Frozenpelt didn't have an answer for that. He ended up staring at the grass too, fur bristling slightly. Ghoststar was right. Greyclan today didn't match up with the legends at all, nor with what he'd heard growing up from the old cats who were alive before the massacre. More and more cats were dying from unknown causes, disappearing mysteriously, more and more tales of monsters prowling the borders were leaking into camp. He thought about Lilacfeather's face, the sheer terror at the mere mention of whatever had attacked him. How long before something like that reached camp? How long before their dwindling luck ran out?
"…I agree, things have been rough for…years now. But maybe things will settle with time. Good times come to an end, but so do bad times, right?"
Ghoststar looked up as Frozenpelt gave his shoulder a comforting headbutt, the deputy's warm smile contrasting quite nicely against his namesake. "Or maybe things need to change for the better. Maybe we could grow into a new and better era of Greyclan. But whatever happens, I'll be by your side. You got that?"
…Ghoststar stared at him.
"…Yeah. I got it."
Frozenpelt smiled and started padding forward, but suddenly stopped, eyes widening as he stared at something in the distance. "SHADOWPAW!! Get back here, that part's over the border!!"
Ghoststar looked up.
Shadowpaw batted at the water of the river playfully, tail lashing as he tried to catch minnows passing him by. They had already reached the river? How long was he in his own thoughts for?
…The…the river…?
Ghoststar's ear flicked to the side, his fur standing on end. Faintly, from upstream, the sound of rushing water.
The river.
Shadowpaw looked up.
The tidal wave thundered down the mountain. Shadowpaw couldn't move.
…He couldn't exactly describe what had happened. One moment, he was staring up at certain death, the roar of the water almost drowning out the shrieks of his clanmates. The next, whatever had grabbed him by the scruff let go, sending him tumbling safely onto the grass. He watched the enormous wave sweep over any unfortunate brush in its path, shaking so horribly that he was sure he would collapse without the support of Ghoststar's leg. He almost died. He almost died.
…Frozenpelt was quiet, fur standing on end as he looked down at Ghoststar. His head hung low, his panting and coughing barely noticable over the crash of the river. Something black dripped from his nose, off of his tongue, and fell gently to the grass.
Greyclan was supposed to be a paradise. The mountain was supposed to provide through its power, though Frozenpelt had never actually seen anything he couldn't explain. That might've been why it rattled him so much now, to see something so clearly wrong happen right in front of his eyes.

"An interactive command-prompt story in which you interact with the world and other characters through the single main character, building relationships, caring for your clan, and discovering the many secrets hidden just out of sight."
"I told you it was a bad idea," Fireleaf mutters. Thistlegaze flicks his tail--in annoyance or agreement, he isn't quite sure.
Two cats stand at ScrubClan's border, in the same rocky lee Polyatomic used to wait. One is old, a silvery cat with dark eyes, who loafs in the shade. The other is a large brown tabby tom, full-grown, but with an adolescent's chubby face; if he were Clan, he'd've only had his warrior name for a moon, if that.
Polyatomic, who is on this patrol--for better or for worse--rushes over to greet them. "Papa Fusion! Cuz Ribo! Hey!" At least the kittypet has the manners to greet the silver elder first, politely touching noses. Or maybe not, as immediately after he tackles the younger cat to the ground, rolling in the dust and batting at his stomach with sheathed claws like a kitten.
"A warrior doesn't play on patrol," Fireleaf scolds him, wrinkling his nose.
But Polyatomic only rolls his eyes as he climbs to his paws. "Sure," Polyatomic mews, dragging the word out into a drawl. "You should Cypresstooth that. Or Dragonflyswan. Or auntie Patchbat."
Fireleaf doesn't have anything to say to that, and snaps his jaw shut, fuming silently.
Thistlegaze stalks over. He doesn't physically pull Polyatomic back; his glare is order enough, and the blue tom sheepishly rejoins the patrol on ScrubClan's side. "Is this going to be a regular occurrence? Family visiting at the borders?" Thistlegaze says, censure clear in his voice.
Before Polyatomic can answer, the young brown tomcat interrupts: "I'm not here to visit, I'm here to join ScrubClan!"
Thistlegaze's stare goes from cold to withering, and to his satisfaction, the young tom takes several steps back from the border in response. "Great," he says, frostily. "Just what ScrubClan needs: another kitten."
The brown tom puffs up, but is held back by the older silver tomcat, Fusion, who stands with a yawn. "We didn't mean to get off on the wrong foot," he says. He speaks like a mentor: slow, even, his words carrying weight. "I'm Fusion, and this is my grandson, Ribosome."
Fusion likely seeks to calm, but Thistlegaze feels talked down to, and prickles under the older cat's smile. "Let me guess, you want to join too?"
That only gets a low chuckle, a chuff of amusement. "Of course not. I'm perfectly happy with the life I have." That, at least, gets Thistlegaze to lower his hackles, though he still eyes the pair distrustfully. "I do ask that you take my grandson up on his offer, however. He's done a lot of research on native plants and animals, with a focus on medicine. His plant identification is quite good."
The young cat preens and fidgets under the praise, unable to quite sit still. It's a very kit-like response, and not a point in his favor. Fireleaf, who has been quiet so far, steps up. "What's the only cure for yellowcough?"
Ribosome wrinkles his nose. "Yellow... cough? Oh, I assume you mean a viral pneumonia! I'd probably start with low doses of tansy and juniper to help oxygen intake--maybe a touch of garlic too depending on the severity--then a more aggressive dose of tansy and lungwort to root out any secondary infections, along with chamomile and lavender for chills and fevers respectively, and to help keep strength up. Likely a low dose of catmint the whole way, especially dried, to counteract some of the nausea from the other herbs."
Thistlegaze looks to Fireleaf, but the ginger tom only shrugs. "Sounds familiar. He either knows what he's talking about or is a really good liar."
"I know what I'm doing! Well, I don't have any practical experience, but the books had lots of pictures!"
The silver elder, Fusion, steps back, that easy smile still on his face. "Let your healer see if he's worthy of the title. I'll come back here in three days time to pick him up if it doesn't work out. How does that sound?"
Thistlegaze levels a stare at Ribosome, but the young cat found his nerves and doesn't back down this time, meeting the deputy's eye. "Fine," he finally agrees. "A trial period, then."
Polyatomic squeals and leaps over the border, tackling Ribosome again. "You can have a nest right beside mine! You do not want to sleep in the healer's den with Spittlebugspeck, trust me. He's mean and he probably snores."
Fireleaf snorts. "True. If you can survive Spittlebugspeck for three days, I guess we'll have to keep you. I don't think any Clan-born kit would dare apprentice under him willingly."
[ The rest of the moon will be written tomorrow! I'm busy today and this scene kinda got away from me hehe
Yes, Polyatomic has an absolutely massive extended family. They all live in the same research complex, and kinda adopt their own humans.
Something to look forward to: Patchbat conspires with Thymebush, Splinter, and Tortrixdusk to set Zell up on a date. With whom? You'll just have to guess (; ]
(Also ignore that he has Patchbat as an adopted parent; it's the easiest way to have Clangen recognize them as family so they don't accidentally become surrogates for their aunts or flirt with cousins or smth)
