Hello, i am Hillqq! I am 19 and in college for mechanical engineering, and mathematics. I have stage three neurologic Lyme disease, and am in treatment I am physically disabled and in chronic pain. I use a manual wheelchair all the time now, But i can still stand on crutches a little. I am also a survivor of medical torture through a pain program, which is most of why i am disabled, and have PTSD. Any post discussing this will be tagged with medical torture.

medical professionals when a patient advocates for themselves in a medical setting (x100 if that patient is a part of any minority): damn. you’re a hypochondriac crazy bitch who has every mental illness and is seeking every narcotic in existence. that’s the only reason you’d be disappointed in the care you’re receiving here. in retaliation, we will be even less helpful and less sympathetic. our jobs are hard. people are dying. we don’t have time to deal with anyone who is slightly inconvenient for us.

saw a woman talking about how betrayed she felt by her female gyno who really hurt her during a pap smear & claimed the cervix has no nerve endings. & i really do feel for her but also I think this is the problem with people only viewing medical bigotry and abuse as a problem that is the byproduct of other forms of bigotry & not tied to how the medical establishment works inherently.

it's not just "that doctor has internalized misogyny" it's that western medicine is, as in so many parts of our culture, deeply authoritarian. the patient is meant to be a passive problem to be solved by the active doctor. there is meant to be a stark harsh line between you and the doctor, where you are pure of any medical knowledge and simply report the raw data & let the doctor interpret it. this is how the system works. it fucks over marginalized groups the most because that's how marginalization works, but even a thin white abled cis man could get fucked over by this shit if he's unlucky.

female doctors will not save us! trans doctors will not save us! doctors of color will not save us! these are all GOOD things and we DO need more representation in the medical field, it DOES help. but it will not save us. the same goes with teaching as well frankly. these issues cannot be reduced down to simply getting more people from columns B C and D into the same fucked system. nothing can make up for the societal change of heart we really need.

it is genuinely legitimately WILD that its so common for doctors to basically say “you just think you’re in pain but u actually aren’t. its all in your head” like if we read in a history book that they did that in the 1800s we’d be like woah the medical field of the past was awful!!! but its literally happening now. actually imagine literally any other field of science encountering evidence that doesnt line up with exactly what they were taught and just being like “nah my education is infallible, its the evidence that is wrong”

Shout out to people with very treatable or curable disabilities who aren't treated or cured. Whether it be bad luck, poor responses to treatment, inability to take treatments, not being willing to deal with potential side effects, whatever, you deserve accommodation and to be taken seriously as a disabled person. I hope the next person to tell you "that's not a disability" or "just do [basic treatment]" explodes painfully.

yes, doctors suck, but also "the medical ethics and patient interaction training doctors receive reinforces ableism" and "the hyper competitive medical school application process roots out the poor, the disabled, and those who would diversify the field" and "anti-establishment sentiment gets applications rejected and promotions requests denied, weeding out the doctors on our side" and "the gruesome nature of the job and the complete lack of mental health support for medical practitioners breeds apathy towards patients" and "insurance companies often define treatment solely on a cost-analysis basis" and "doctors take on such overwhelming student loan debt they have no choice but to pursue high paying jobs at the expense of their morals" are all also true

none of this absolves doctors of the truly horrendous things they say and do to patients, but it's important to acknowledge that rather than every doctor being coincidentally a bad person, there is something specific about this field and career path that gives rise to such high prevalence of ableist attitudes

doctors in the uk are trying to diagnose my mother with fibro because she's exhibiting symptoms of the heart condition my grandpa passed onto us, and it just reminds me of the fibro and fnd misdiagnoses i had. they love to throw vague uncurable idiopathic and likely to be re-classified as something else in 10 years diagnoses at any afab person they find annoying. (especially if you're an immigrant).

Im glad there are orher pople seeing this crap! My ‘AMPS’ (also known as juvenile fibromyalgia) was lyme disease, its the most common source of AMPS diagnosis, more common than actually having AMPS (if anyone actually does)
