the thing is i will never forgive jkr for a lot but especially her sending harry back to the dursleys every summer “for his own protection” and the message that sent to kids
because like here’s the dealio homies — having your main character blatantly abused by his guardians to the point where they forced him to live in a cupboard under the stairs, were starving him, putting bars on his window and padlocks on his door, and, on more than one occasion, got physically abusive with him and then! anytime he brings up not wanting to go back (which is a huge red flag if a child who hasn’t seen their family in like ten months not only didn’t miss them but desperately doesn’t want to see them) and how much they clearly hate him and that they were starving him and putting bars on his window he and any other child who stood up for him (re: ron, fred, and george weasley) would be summarily dismissed and even punished for attempting to help him get out of there! and what message does that send to kids? that if you’re being abused don’t bother telling an adult who otherwise cares about you because they won’t do anything? that you shouldn’t even confide in your friends because they could get in trouble for trying to help you (ron, fred, and george in cos) or might even side with the adults who think for some convoluted reason that it’s better you’re there than with people who care about you (hermione in ootp)? that you should tough out abuse because you’re better off with family than anyone else? that your physical and emotional well-being can and should be sacrificed for the greater good? fuck that.
