Once again as someone who hasn't watched more than two seasons of Naruto but googled a lot...
Why'd they do him like that? By that I mean...
Where's his bookshelf?
He has like... 7 books in the anime. Give back his books. Let this man collect his erotica in peace. Don't take that away from him. Put it back.
Specificity, Voice and Backstory
Today we're talking about character voice, backstory, and writing with specificity. I’ve talked about all these elements separately, but combined these three are the most important elements of your description. Why? Because describing something is the best place to learn not only what the character is experiencing, but more about them and their backstory.
We do that through drawing comparisons not to abstract ideas, but to specific moments the character has witnessed. Okay, consider these two examples:
The room smelled of warm spices and herbs like a fancy restaurant kitchen.
Vs.
The room smelled like the thyme and basil that clung to my mother's hair when she had finished making dinner, kneeling to hug me after I came in from school.
They convey the same information, but we learn so much more about the character in the second example.
In my Differentiating between Perspectives post, I talked more about attitude in character voice. What your character compares things to is a great tell for voice. Here’s the example from that post:
“The bar was filled to the brim with sweaty drunks falling over each other, barely cognizant of the drinks they were spilling--much less so the people around them.”
Versus
“Upbeat dance music filled the bar. A crowd had formed in the middle of the floor, people cheering and dancing together like the rest of the world hardly mattered.”
Right?

I’m sure many of you are already working on projects that have multiple characters that hold perspective (as in, we follow the story from th
So when you’re describing something and reaching for a metaphor or something to liken it to, try to make it personal, in the character’s voice, and specific. We can learn a whole lot more that way.

Important information for writers who aren’t British but like to try to sound British in their British-y fanfiction
“You need tea” - you are having, or just had, a medical emergency. This tea will have like 3 sugars and milk in no matter how you normally take your tea.
When I gave birth they kept bringing me cups of very sweet tea until I drank one
Even when covered in blood and being stitched up
“Do you want some tea?” I’ve something to say and I’m nervous about it

Whenever people try to tell me to ship "moral ships" I like to think about how inherently immoral it is to flirt with service workers at coffee shops where they're obliged to be nice to you so... many coffee shop AUs are like. Immoral. But given that they are a fantasy where this is instant romance without the fear of trapping a service worker in an uncomfortable situation that's tantamount to workplace sexual harassment, I enjoy the cutesy coffee shop AUs immensely.
And that's basically my attitude towards all fantasy. There's lots of things I enjoy in fantasy that wouldn't work IRL. Enemies to lovers. Sudden kisses. Miscommunications in relationships. Codependency. Fight sluts who physically assault each other while emotionally connecting.
Once you start ascribing your morals to the fiction you consume, you tend to miss the issues in even the most innocuous, innocent seeming scenarios. It's easy to judge other people's fictional enjoyment until someone points out your innocent coffee shop AU is romanticised workplace harassment.
But it's all fiction. It's a fantasy. That's why it's fine.
A lack of education around things like consent, healthy relationships, self respect and respect of others, bodily autonomy, etc, has made people think they can rely only on fiction to tell them what right - but that's dangerous. And unsustainable.
Tumblr, buddy, listen to me. This is an unprecedented opportunity. You can snap up all of the pie here, and become defacto internet goodguy easy. All you gotta do is... drop the nsfw ban. Unambiguously. Announce that dicks are back on the menu. You want people subscribed the blogs? You want people to actually use your Post+ function? Porn. Let us use it for porn. The youngins aren't joining this site anyway, you're not competing with tiktok. The vaguely horny 20-40 demographic though? You can have that. You can have all of that. Think about it.

Weird genre of person is when fans of media with actually complex and interesting characters get scared by any level of moral ambiguity whatsoever like why are you buying purity at the nuance store
Hm, I really think Naruto is one of those stories that would benefit from abandoning the explicit romantic plotline between the protagonist (aka Team 7) in favor of telling it all through subtext and parallels.
In other words, don't say who likes who in Team 7, don't mention any crush or romantic feeling, don't clarify, avoid the specifics. Instead, let them blush and act insane about each other, blurring the lines in a way that makes it clear their dynamic isn't the typical shinobi team dynamic.
Would this essentially kill the Boruto plotline? Yes. I honestly don't have an answer for that one, since any ship would have made the fans mad anyway and since you can't talk about a next generation without specifying pairings and stuff. I'm not a big fan of the Otsutsuki clan as the new antagonists either, since I preferred Naruto when it was about ninjas and not alien gods —I don't dislike it wholly, let it be known, but I think there was so much to be said about the shinobi world without touching the alien gods thing.
Maybe by avoiding the explicit romance triangle of Team 7, some of the most hated events of the story could have been avoided or rewritten with different connotations. Maybe it'd make everyone happy, since it'd allow them to speculate in the canon what were Team 7 about, what they truly felt about each other, etc.
