to be honest i think there’s a large number of people who conflate the very real and widespread phenomenon that women tend to be written off as just mothers or love interests in order to diminish their importance in a given story with the fact that a huge reason they’re sent to narrative purgatory in this way is BECAUSE the labels of “mother” and “girlfriend/wife” are systematically devalued and seen as inherently inferior because they’re terms that have been associated with ownership and/or control over women. like the amount of people who’ve told me that a certain female character is uninteresting or badly written because she happened to have a kid or be a man’s girlfriend or sister just to find out she was actually fleshed out very well and carried significant narrative importance frustrates me soo bad. there’s a huge problem with how those roles (specifically “wife” and “mother”) are systematically devalued and yet also perpetuated as the only viable options for women to achieve their societal roles in the patriarchy but acknowledging the devaluation of those labels to begin with is an important discussion in itself.

most people watch the x files because they either want to see aliens or watch mulder and scully kiss. coincidentally the x files is a show that is well known for avoiding showing us aliens at all costs and also not letting mulder and scully kiss.

This was a vaguepost yeah but it's also something that happens every single time anyone dislikes a queer media property. That's a kids cartoon and it isn't ABOUT being queer, so it doesn't count! That's a book written by a woman about men, so it doesn't count! That's a show with a straight showrunner so it doesn't count! This post has well and truly escaped containment, which is fun because I get to see what other fandoms people refer to in the tags. On the other hand, it's depressing that this is so common, that people are constantly tearing down queer books and movies and tv shows as "not TRULY queer" because they aren't works that speak to them particularly, even if you're not aware of the specific incidents that informed the post (OFMD, Heated Rivalry, MDZS, Hazbin Hotel, etc)

the hardest pill to swallow about being in a fandom is that some people are only ankle-deep in it and aren't taking things too seriously and other people are up to their necks and taking it as seriously as a heart attack and yet everybody thinks that every other person is in it just as deep as they are and will get very upset to realize otherwise because they don't know how to engage with the different perspective

I'm a corset centrist. I think it's reasonable for historical fiction characters to not like corsets, but I reserve the right to roll my eyes in that scene in Bridgerton where they tightlace the girl before putting her in an empire waist dress.

This is a really good point/set of points. I've gone on and on before about why most women wouldn't have been that bothered by their corsets so I don't want to bother rehashing it, but this is the flipside of that aspect.

It really, really is not inherently a problem to have your character(s) not like the feeling of wearing a corset. But it is bad writing to repeatedly use the same cliché characterization. If you're determined to go with this, don't just be like "well she's too free-spirited and modern" and call it a day (and if you do see this cliché criticized, please stop accusing the critics of being dumb misogynists, it just makes you look like you don't know enough about the historical genre to be aware that it's a cliché).
