I am a huge giant Xiao Jiu apologist and woobifier, but I honestly cannot stand it when people make him out as less of an ass than he was, or try to minimize the crimes we know he did actually commit. The fact that Shen Jiu is bitter and petty, and dedicated to his own doom/the destruction of anything that reminds him of himself is what makes his character so interesting in the first place! He wants to die horribly! He wants everyone around him to hate his guts! He deifies (and in turn dehumanizes) a small, select number of people he believes are inherently good, clings to them and pushes them away in equal measure, because he doesn’t want to drag them down with him, but at the same time wants to be loved so badly wants to steal and corrupt that goodness for himself and prove to himself that he is inherently evil. He is selfish, cruel, a danger to himself and others, full of love, full of loathing, and in a permanent state of prey animal fear. If you cannot love him when he sucks, you cannot love him because he always sucks.
