The mares were all quite excited, as they'd seen the emu, and clearly done some running in the field before I arrived. This meant Shakira was feeling very competitive, which spurred the Arabs on to greater speeds; Abba, of course, won every single race after the first one, which she appeared to be treating as a warm-up.
