This year marked their fifth year together, and Hermione already knew what she wanted to surprise Luna with.
"Harry is having a lovely time, isn't he?" asked Luna. She stood with Hermione, holding a drink in her hands.
The Ministry gala was lively this year. The party was outdoors under the stars. Speeches were short. Drinks flowed quickly, and people took to the dance floor.
They watched as one of their oldest friends tripped over his own two feet, attempting to dance with their former prickly Potions professor.
"Should we rescue him?" asked Hermione, brows furrowed.
Luna gave Hermione a brilliant smile. "The professor finds him enduring."
Turning her attention away from the couple, Hermione glanced at Luna before giving a double take.
"Do you like it?"
Luna shone under the moonlight. Her blonde hair had an ethereal glow; her silver dress shimmered. However, it was the sparks that followed her every movement that took Hermione's breath away. Blue, red, green. They danced around her form, pulling everyone's eyes toward her.
"Is this why you kept me out of the house?" asked Hermione, taking Luna in her arms. She set aside their drinks before pulling Luna to the dance floor.
"I want it to be a surprise," said Luna, smiling. The Ministry gala was their unofficial anniversary and each year they celebrate in their own way, even though they had to attend the party given their status in the wizarding world.
This year marked their fifth year together, and Hermione already knew what she wanted to surprise Luna with. They would sneak away after stealing several bottles of wine. They would Apparate to the fields behind their cottage. The hibiscus flowers were blooming; the trees were full of ripe apples. Hermione had packed blankets in a wicker basket. They would lie down and gaze at the stars.
And, under a full moon, Hermione would ask Luna to marry her.
Hermione's heart pounded at the thought. She was giddy and her smile could not be contained. Leaning in, she whispered, "Want to get out of here?"
The sparks that surrounded Luna popped, showering them both with multi-coloured lights.
There is a cottage in the woods just outside of town. Haunted, the villagers whisper, Abandoned.
Hermione doesn’t believe in rumours, only in cold-hard facts.
Fact: Hermione missed the shot, and now the swan is gone.
Fact: She is also lost.
Fact: The cottage is real.
It is made of red brick and green moss. Creeping vines hang from every ledge, window, and crevice. The swan sleeps peacefully in the window. It’s a beautiful creature, so beautiful she almost doesn’t want to kill it. She wonders how it got inside.
Hours pass, and dusk arrives, but the owner of the cottage never returns, and the swan never moves.
As the last embers of sunlight fade, the swan lifts its head, and Hermione readies her bow. It arches its back and spreads its wings. Longer and longer they stretch until they completely block the small window.
Hermione blinks, and the swan is gone. In its place stands a fair maiden with corn-silk hair and snow-white skin.
Slowly, Hermione lowers her bow. The maiden is beautiful, just like the swan, with a bird-like chin and sharp blue eyes. Hermione gasps, and those eyes snap to hers.
Hermione’s frozen heart starts to beat.
