8.15 광복절 Korean Independence Day

Hello! This is Admin Hyun.

August 15th is Korea’s Liberation day / Independence day. It’s a meaningful day for us.

Before I tell you about Korea’s Independence Day, let me introduce a story of how Japan ruled Korea.

In the beginning, Japan deprived of Korea’s diplomatic rights by forcing the Japan-Korea Treaty of 1905(을사늑약- Eul Sa Neuk Yak). Although it was in a form of a diplomatic agreement, it was invalid because King Gojong (고종) did not authorize it’s approval.

Then, Japan dismissed the Korean army (군대해산) with the Korea-Japan New Convention(한일신협약), also called the Treaty of Jeongmi-Seven(정미 7조약), took away our judicial power(사법권) with the Giyugakseo(a note concluded in 1909 with Japanese imperialism to depute the judicial power and the rights of the prison affairs to Japan) and shortly after, Korea’s police enforcement power(경찰권). In the end, Japan removed Korea’s sovereignty (국권) by annexing (강제합병) Korea and thereafter 35 years of suffering under colonization of Japan began. During the Japanese occupation(일제강점기), countless Korean civilians from young girls to old men were forced into hard labor(강제노동), biological experiments(생체실험) and even as “comfort women”(위안부) to serve at Japanese military camps. 

However, Korean independence activists (독립운동가) such as Kim Gu(김구), An Jung-Geun(안중근) and Yu Gwan-Soon(유관순) made extraordinary achievements including armed resistance against Japan, establishing a provisional government in Shanghai, China, education of Korean people and industrial development to build national strength. During their independence movements, many activists were caught, tortured at facilities such as Seodaemoon Hyungmuso(서대문 형무소) and some even lost their lives. 

After taking economic and human resources from many colonized countries in Asia, Japan was able to build aircraft carriers and launch an attack on the United States at Pearl Harbor in 1941(World War II). However, In 1945, Japan became the only nation in history to become a target of nuclear bombs and surrendered to the US. Subsequently, Korea and all other colonized countries in Asia were liberated.

Ready, Set, Type! Practice Typing Korean with Games

So you know how to type in Korean. Now what? How do you get good at it? 

One of my students in my Beginner Korean class just picked up some stickers for her keyboard to practice typing Korean on her computer, and asked me how do you get used to the placement of all the 한글 characters? They seem to be in places that make no sense.

The answer is: Practice, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!

Well, just like when we all learned to type our native languages, it just takes familiarity and practice of making your fingers learn where the characters are, but that can be really difficult when we don’t use a second language very often.

So here’s some FREE tools and websites that can help you practice touch typing and memorizing the Korean keyboard layout.

Here are some tools to help you with that:

TaDak TaDak

A Korean website to help kids practice typing, TaDak TaDak is an onomatopoeia for the sound keys make when you type (타닥타닥). This site rocks! It has so many different exercises for practicing typing Korean and it’s freeeeeee.

Individual 한글 Placement - Helps you to memorize the layout of the keyboard

Word Practice - like flashcards! You see a picture and the matching word in Korean and type it. 

Under 낱말연습 tab, you can practice with 우리낱말 for user-submitted flashcards. Accuracy not ensured though because a lot of these are submitted by kids lol

Sentence Practice - You can practice your 띄어쓰기 here and get a feedback on your typing speed (타자속도) and accuracy (정확도)

Hard Mode TaDak Games

If you want to really suffer or you’re an advanced learned, try these TaDak games on for size.

Dictation: You listen to the recording, type what the speaker says and get scored on your results. I have never gotten 100% ㅠㅠ

Puzzle: Guess the 2-3 character words from the 한글 provided. You’ll get a lot of practice furiously typing and wracking your brain for vocabulary that fit the possible combinations.

I’m sure we all felt like (or still feel like, in my case) children when it comes to learning Korean; my advice is to just lean into it. Don’t be taken aback by using tools for kids.

Hangul Attack

GO! Billy Korean provides amazing resources for Korean learning, and one of those is Hangul Attack, a completely free game to practice Korean typing.

You type the 한글 as they fall from the sky; if you make a mistake, a meteor will fall down. You can shoot meteors down with your space bar. Any characters or meteors that hit the ground drain your life points.

TypeRacer

Increase your typing speed while racing against others - publicly or privately.

You can either enter a typing race against random online opponents, practice on your own or race your friends. Great tool for those of us with a competitive streak cough cough

Handwriting 한글🖋

Today I’m planning on showing you my handwriting as well as how it has evolved since I started learning Korean. I also wrote out how to write some letters that look a bit different when handwritten than when typed because that was what used to confuse me at first.

This is how my handwriting used to look in 2014. These are Lee Hi’s lyrics but… well, look at how I didn’t separate words properly and it’s just very all over the place. I was trying to learn Korean for a few months back then. (I am too ashamed to show you what it looked like at the complete beginning… Imagine something written with your non-dominant hand and your eyes closed lol)

This is one year later to show you that I haven’t made much progress, only changes pens (which affects my handwriting a lot) but it’s still very messy and chaotic. These are lyrics of 악동뮤지션 btw~

Here under, you can see what my messy handwriting looked last year. This is some vocab list with example sentences so I didn’t really try to make it pretty. Still looks much better than 5 years ago.

How To Type in Korean

Learning how to read and write Korean is one thing, but typing can seem like a whole nother beast. It doesn’t have to be scary or hard though. Here’s a quick guide on how to get started and how to type in Korean!

Help! I Don’t Have a Korean Keyboard! Where Do I Start?

Not a problem! You have lots of options.

Install the Korean keyboard to your computer’s operating system or mobile phone

Use online keyboard websites (even Google Translate has one)

Free Online Writing

Buy pre-made stickers with 한글 on them and stick them on your keyboard

DIY 한글 stickers with something like transparent tape and sharpie and cover your keys

Buy a silicone cover that fits your keyboard

Print out a layout of the 한글 keyboard and put it somewhere you can look at it while you type

Ultimately, you’re going to want to memorize the locations of the 한글 characters by heart because it will make it easier and faster to touch type, but it’s totally okay to start out with the tools you need to succeed.

How to Type in Korean

As we probably know, Korean words are made up of consonants and vowels. On Korean keyboards, the consonants are all on the left hand side, with the vowels on the right. To double the consonant, making a 쌍 character, hold down the shift key. However, only the ㅔ and ㅐ characters can be doubled with the shift key into ㅖ and ㅒ because ㅠㅕㅛ all have their own dedicated keys.

To type Korean words, we start with the starting consonant on the left side, then type the vowel on the right side and an ending consonant 받침 if there is one. Just like creating words when writing, the pattern is the same: CV, CVC or CVCC.

Spaces are only needed for 띄어쓰기, or spacing between words for legibility. Otherwise, you can just type all the way through; Korean keyboards are able to automatically figure out where one word ends and the next begins.

Examples:

ㅂㅏㅇ (qkd) --> 방

ㅇㅣㄹㄱㅇㅓㅇㅛ  (dlrfdjdy)--> 읽어요

ㅎㅏㄴㄱㅜㄱㅇㅓ  ㄱㅗㅇㅂㅜㅎㅐㅇㅛ (rksrnrdj rhdqngody) --> 한국어 공부해요

Tip: The typing pattern for Korean words will always start left side-right side so get in the habit of that rhythm! Of course the rhythm will change depending on the 한글 in your words — sometimes it’ll go left-right-left-left-right-left if you’re typing a word like 안녕, or left-right-left-left-left-right-left for 닭발 — but you’ll always start on the left and then go to the right.

Translation:

새벽 3시 - 3am

3년동안 사귀었는데 카톡으로 갑자기 헤어지는 거 말이 돼애애? We dated for three years…does suddenly breaking up over text make any sense???

    *This phrase is like “We dated for three years…and you break up with me over text?? WTF??” kind of anger. 말이 돼? is like asking “does that make sense” in a WTF kind of way. It doesn’t translate smoothly in English, but it’s a common expression in Korean. 

흥분된 상태 - excited state

분노 - rage

새벽 3시 - 3am

내일 너무 기대돼서 잠이 안 오네. I’m so excited for tomorrow that I can’t sleep. (“sleep isn’t coming”)

——-

흥분하다 is a word that many Korean students use incorrectly, and that’s because of the translation. 흥분하다 translates to “to be excited.” And, that’s because it means a sudden rush of emotion.

The problem is that many students want to say something like “I’m excited to go to Korea.” 저는 한국에 가는 것에 흥분해요. (X)

But, this is not how to express that feeling. There is a much better expression. 기대되다. Now, this word is translated as “to expect.” And while, it can be used to express expectations, it’s also used to express “Looking forward to”/“excited for something.”

This is also why many Koreans will say “I’m expecting it,” when they want to say “I’m looking forward to it.”

So, let’s look at how we can use these correctly.

흥분되다/하다

그 사람이 우리 언니를 욕하는 것을 듣고 흥분해서 싸울 뻔했어요. (After) I heard that person talk badly about my sister, I was so “upset” that I almost fought them.

      *In this case, 흥분하다 could be seen as “upset.” A rush of angry feelings that made the heart race. 

대학교에 합격한 걸 듣고 너무 흥분해서 도서관에서 소리를 질렀어요. (After) I heard that I was accepted into college, I was so excited that I yelled in the library. 

괜찮아. 흥분하지 말고 일단 해결할 방법을 생각해 보자. It’s okay. Don’t get worked up, instead let’s think of a solution first. 

흥분된 목소리 an excited voice

기대되다/하다

내일 한국에 가서 넘나 기대돼요. I’m so excited, because I’m going to Korea tomorrow. 

오늘 데이트 해서 진짜 기대돼요. I have a date today, so I’m really excited. 

내가 쓴 글을 기대하지 마. 완전 쓰레기야ㅋㅋㅋ Please don’t look forward to the thing I wrote. It’s completely garbage. 

내일 캡틴 마블이란 영화를 볼 거야. 너무 기대돼. Tomorrow I’m going to see the movie Captain Marvel. I’m really looking forward to it. 

Note: The difference between 되다 and 하다 is important when understanding these to words. Because 기대되다 and 기대하다 are slightly different. 하다 is used to refer to something that you are actively doing at the time you’re talking about it or in the past. 되다 typically refers to more passive actions or something that is true, but not necessarily using all your attention.

So, 기대되다 is being excited. You’re in that state passively.

But 기대하다 is a constant state of that excitement or expectation. Which is why we say 기대하지 마. Don’t be excited. Because it’s a little strange to say 기대되지 마 “Don’t become excited" in Korean. Because 되다 refers to something out of your control most of the time. That’s why it’s passive. So, it’s strange to say don’t “become” excited when you have no control over it.

Anyway, good luck everyone! 기대되다(to be excited for, to look forward to) is a great word to use. It’s used all the time. Unlike 흥분되다, which is not overly common in comparison. And also, 흥분 is  used as “sexual excitement,” so, you don’t want to say 내가 흥분했다 in the wrong situation. It might become awkward.

i have a question!! you posted about this grid style paper that people should learn how to write on if they want to take topik; eventually i'd like to take topik, i'm still far from it, but still i was already wondering how exactly you'd write on this grid paper??? one syllable per box?

I guess you’re talking about this joke I made.

Yeah, it’s one syllable per box, but the rules are more complicated than that. For example, when you write ellipsis, instead of writing three dots … you have to write six in the middle of the squares, not at the bottom.

The paper is called squared manuscript paper in English and 원고지 in Korean. Be careful, Chinese and Japanese also have it but it has different format and different rules for writing on it.

I don’t know how to use it exactly nor how strictly you need to follow the rules when writing essay for TOPIK since I can’t take TOPIK, but I did a quick Google search for 원고지 사용법 and “how to use Korean squared manuscript paper” and this is what I found

Ok so I’ve noticed a particular phrase get popular recently (at least amongst monbebes) because of something Monsta X’s Minhyuk said in a V Live:

Basically this isn’t like a weird phrase he came up with, it’s actually super common! (And we should start using more often in English, too lol)

You know when you’re bored in general and you just want to do something so you start snacking? That’s basically what this means.

The phrase itself is:

안녕하세요 여러분 ㅠ 오래만이죠? 좀 늦게 와서 미안합니다.

Hello everyone ㅠ It’s been a while hasn’t it? Sorry for being a bit late.

휴식때 팔로워들 좀 많아진 것 같아요 ㅠㅠ 업데이테도 아무도 안 해서 실망하게 한다면 죄송합니다. 제 인생에 대한 걸 지금 좀 설명하고 싶어서 이 글을 쓰려고 왔어요.

During hiatus it seems like I gained some followers ㅠㅠ Since I didn’t update at all if I disappointed you at all I’m sorry. I wanted to explain a bit about my life, so I came to write this post.

제가 2월에 미국에 돌아왔어요. 그동안에 제가 한국어 공부 정말 하지 않았네요 ^^; 작년에 한국어능력시험을 보기 위해 너무 열심히 공부해서 공부에 대한 관심이 좀 잃어버렸더라고요. 한국에서 일이 끝나고 집에 와서 그냥 빈둥빈둥 했네요~ 그리고 tumblr위해 하기 좋은 포스트 생각해봐도 생각이 안 났어요 ㅠ

I came back to the USA in February. During that time I really didn’t study Korean ^^; last year studying for the TOPIK I studied so hard that I lost a little bit of interest in studying. After finishing work in Korea and then coming home, I just kind of was lazy~ and I couldn’t come up with ideas for my tumblr even though I tried.

근데 작년부터 생기된 꿈을 아직까지도 딸라고 있습니다. 그 꿈이 뭔데요? 한영 번역자를 되는 꿈입니다. 

But the dream that I realized from last year I’m still following now. That dream is what, you say? It’s to become a Korean-English translator.

그동안에 제가 한국에서 번역대학원을 가려고 해서 장학금에 직원했지만 결국은 못 받았어요. 오래 우울하고나서 더 강한 씽이 될도록 하기로 했어요. 그래서 이제 열일한는 씽이 됐어요 -- 여름엔 일을 많이 하고 있고 돈을 모으고나서 9월에 한국에 돌아갈 예정입니다. 번역자를 되고싶다면 유창하게 돼야해서 연세대 한국어 언어원에서 한국어를 열심히 공부할 거예요.

During that time, I wanted to go to Korea to go to translation graduate school, so I applied for a scholarship, but in the end, I didn’t receive it. After being depressed for a while, I decided I would become a stronger Hsing. So now, I’ve becoming hard-working Hsing -- for the summer I’m working hard and saving money and then in September I will return to Korea. Because I must become fluent in Korean to become a translator, I will study Korean hard at Yonsei’s Korean Language Institute.

I do study! Sorry, I took a break after the TOPIK cram session of last fall and then I fell off the train for a while when I came back home to the USA. But I’ll be more active moving forward, as I will be returning soon to Korea to study Korean exclusively.

What was the reason you actually joined TALK? Cuz I feel like most kpop fangirls just see someone like Skyetokki did it, and want to jump on the whole train just to be closer to their idols. It seems like very few have a real interest in teaching? And the people I follow who are in TALK always badmouth the poor kids on their social media. It makes me feel bad for the students that they have to put up with a bunch of unmotivated teachers who just wanted an easy way into Korea :(

My major was Asian Studies and Journalism in school and I always wanted to study abroad either in Korea or Japan but never was able to. After I graduated and got a job in news, I found it boring and not what I thought. At that time, I’d gotten to hear about TaLK through Skye actually, but I did thorough research on the program (researched other TaLK Scholars experiences) and thought that it would be a great way to go there finally. I agree that there are a lot of kpop fans that go into TaLK thinking it would be an easy way into Korea and to their idols and aren’t motivated to teach their kids. It’s frustrating that these kids don’t get the best teachers, just the teachers that are available.

But also, TaLK isn’t meant to be a teacher program - more like a teacher-on-training-wheels program. EPIK requires a TEFL certificate but TaLK doesn’t - so a lot of people in TaLK (not just the kpop fans) are people who don’t necessarily care about teaching in general, just wanted to travel to Korea. Luckily a lot of those folks leave around 6 months or a year. The program also doesn’t provide a lot of support for the scholars who have bad situations with their schools - I’ve literally been told by a coordinator for the province that “well, that’s Korea” - so it makes us feel very alone and there’s a lot of venting on social media to try to feel in control of the situation. (It’s not right at all, but it’s an explanation)

Useful sentence endings— ~고요, ~군요, ~나요, ~네요, ~더라고요, ~지요

We have already looked at the main formality levels—하십시오체, 해요체, and 해체—and how to end our sentences with them. There are other endings that we can use as well to add extra emotions or nuances to our speech. Today, we’ll take a look at a few common sentence endings.

~고(요)

Our first sentence ending is when you want to add more information sort of like an afterthought. It is the same ~고 that you would see in the middle of a sentence to connect two ideas. For example:

케이크를 먹고 아이스크림도 먹었어요. (I ate cake, and I ate ice cream too.)

Now, we can break this sentence down into two and give it a different feeling with -고 to end our sentence.

케이크를 먹었어요. 아이스크림도 먹었고요. (I ate cake. I ate ice cream, too.)

When written this way, the eating of the ice cream seems like a sort of afterthought or just additional information to eating cake. In the first example, both of the actions, eating cake and eating ice cream, have equal weight.

We can also use sentence-final ~고 to add on to something that someone else already said. For example:

A: 집 청소를 했어? (Did you clean the house?)

B: 응, 빨래도 다 했고. (Yes, and I did all the laundry too.)

This sentence ending is used to express that the speaker learned something new. In 해요체 you can use ~군요 and in 해체 you can use ~군 or ~구나. In English, we might express a similar meaning with a thoughtful “Oh…” at the start of the sentence.

A: 전 요즘 일도 하고 대학원도 다녀요. (Lately I both work and attend grad school.)

B: 많이 바쁘시군요! (Oh, you’re really busy!)

~나(요)

This one is a question ending! It has a nuance of polite curiosity and closeness.

선생님: 숙제를 했나? (Teacher: Did you do your homework?)

아이: 네, 했어요! (Child: Yes, I did!)

어디서 오셨나요? (Where are you from?)

~네(요)

This form is sort of similar to ~군요 except that it has more of a feeling of surprise. It can be positive or negative surprise; both are fine.

원경 씨의 남자 친구는 정말 잘생겼네요! (Wongyeong’s boyfriend is really good-looking!)

오, 이게 맛있네. (Oh, this is delicious.)

표지만 보면 이 책이 재미있어 보이는데 읽고 보니 별로네요. (Just looking at the cover this book seems interesting, but having read it, it’s not that good.)

~더라(고요)

This sentence ending, ~더라고요 (해요체) or ~더라 (해체), is used to recollect or recount something that you personally experienced.

잠깐 나가 봤는데 날씨는  춥더라고요. (I went outside for just a minute; it’s cold out.)

TOEIC 시험을 보려고? 11월에 그 시험을 봤는데 정말 어렵더라… (You plan to take the TOEIC exam? I took it in November; it’s really hard…)

~지(요)

Our last sentence ending of the day is ~지(요)! Often shortened to 죠 when used in 해요체, this one is for confirmation of a fact. It can also be used as a tag question or for emphasis, like saying “… , right?” in English.

A: 내가 부탁한 거 가져왔어? (Did you bring the thing I asked you for?)

B: 응, 가졌지! (Yes, of course I brought it!)

Another example:

그 고양이가 귀엽죠? (That cat is cute, right?)
