HELLO??????????
ok i read more articles, itâs called chronic wasting disease & we already knew abt it but itâs spreading in north america & is in 24 states rn. uhhh no one knos if it could spread to humans (we dont rly kno anything abt it at all actually đ) but a lot of the articles r saying the concern for that possibility is high rn so. take lots of precautions. weâre probably fine unless we eat it. basically it always existed itâs just making headlines cause itâs spreading a LOT now which is increasing the worry for it spreading to us
PLEASE REBLOG THIS VERSION. ITâS FINE. WEâRE FINE.
Ah. Zombies. Why not?
NO ZOMBIES PLEASE AND THANKS

earlier this month it was 120 degrees in Australia , but yeah lets continue to mock those trying to save us in the 12 years we have left to slow climate changeâs effects.Â
What is the worst thing that could happen if we listen to scientists and change our ways, and then it turns out they were lying?Â
Slowly dying in a mad max hell world to own the libs I guess.Â
this is literally why scientists stopped calling it âglobal warmingâ and started calling it âclimate changeâ
because these dense motherfuckers couldnât get it through their heads that an increase in the average global temperature is, has, and will lead to an increase in extreme weather events including goddamn polar vortexes.
âFner ner ner, look at all the snow outside, what of your global warming now?? CHECK AND MATE SCIENTISTS so much for your fancy degrees and decades of researchâ of fucking course youâre still gonna get a winter you goddamn dingdongs! The Earth still has a fucking axial tilt â there is always going to be a portion of the year that is colder because thatâs when youâre further away from the sun!Â
(unless you live between the tropic of cancer and the tropic of capricorn, in which case youâre at more or less the same distance from the sun all year, but presumably then you arenât pointing to snowfall as proof positive that scientists are spearheading a conspiracy toâŚi donât even fucking know. reduce emissions? meanspiritedly destroy the fossil fuel industry, which is gentle and blameless and certainly has never been linked to enormous environmental disasters or long-term health concerns orâŚ?)
Conservatives will be the fucking death of us
Also the reason for these extremely cold temperatures happening and doing so more often is directly a result of literal global warming. Due to rising temperatures (thanks to climate change caused by humans which is real and happening right now and fuck anyone who says otherwise), the Arctic sea ice has been melting more and more without replenishing itself during winter. To make matters worse, the more ice that melts, the more ocean is exposed, which absorbs (rather that reflecting like ice does) the sunâs energy, further heating up.Â
This rise in polar temperatures is the reason the polar vortex is currently above the US and making Day After Tomorrow a reality
For those who donât know, a polar vortex is an area of low pressure that likes to chill around the poles (both north and south but the north is more relevant here). These areas of cold, dense air are usually kept in check by jet streams: long, narrow, fast flowing air currents caused by two masses of air that are different in density/pressure/temperature etc. meeting.Â
The polar jet streams in particular are caused by the meeting of cold, dense low pressure polar air and warm high pressure air from the tropics. Itâs usually pretty strong, especially during winter, as the temperature gradient between the poles and the tropics is rather large. The bigger the difference, the stronger the wind, and the less likely that polar air escapes southwards.
However, due to the warming around the north pole thanks to the melting sea ice and warming oceans, this gradient is decreasing.
This results in a weaker polar jet stream, which allows the vortex to meander all over the place, such as down south into the US, bringing the cold dense air with it.
Please go forth and use this information to make sure the idiots using this cold snap as piss poor evidence that climate change isnât real know that theyâre wrong and they should feel bad. Also maybe tie them down and make them watch this video (which is where I got these gifs from) which is a good (but terrifying) explanation of how extreme weather events are becoming and will become more common as a result of anthropogenic climate change.

Good FREAKEN morning people!

âManx Syndromeâ
So weâve talked about Scottish folds and Persians (and other brachy breeds), but I havenât seen a lot of talk about manx cats.Â
oh my gosh, isnât she cute? :D Just look at that little tuft of fur on her butt! She doesnât have a tail! Who else wants to go out and get like a million little bunny cats?
Stop. Itâs time to talk about Manx Syndrome. The name itself is a bit of a misnomer, since it doesnât just affect manx cats (or even EVERY manx kitty; Nala exhibited only very mild symptoms). Cymrics are also affected. For simplicityâs sake, itâs often just called Manx Syndrome. What it IS, is a form of spina bifida.
Tail development is highly linked to spine and spinal cord development. When a cat is bred to lack a tail, theyâre being bred for abnormal development of coccygeal (tail) and sacral vertebrae (the spinal cord just in front of the tail). It can also affect vertebrae further up the spine in particularly severe cases.
This can cause some pretty serious issues including urinary incontinence, chronic diarrhea, constipation, and their hind limbs may not function properly. We also see megacolon or rectal prolapse in these catsâ- the fact that they lack the tail muscle also means they lack certain colon muscles, resulting in a failure to push poop out. The more serious symptoms are generally present by the time a kitten is 6 months old. Theyâre usually euthanized at that stage. If they arenât, they will usually end up wearing diapers their whole lives (or require manual manipulation to poop, if theyâre constantly constipated; this is, needless to say, extremely unpleasant for everyone involved) and require very frequent bathing.
In manx cats, there are varying tail lengths:
Rumpy - no tail at all
Rumpy riser - either just a few vertebrae, or even just cartilage
Stumpy - a few centimeters of tail
Stubby - a tail thatâs about half the length of a typical catâs tail
As you get shorter and shorter, the likelihood of spina bifida increases. I still see cats with tails affected by manx syndrome. A study done in 1979 (warning: study includes pictures of internal organs and dissections) produced nine rumpy cats, three rumpy risers, fourteen stumpies and eighteen longy Manxes. All of the rumpies had MS, two of the rumpy risers did, and only one of the stumpies had it. The longies were almost unaffectedâ they still presented with more arthritis in their tail than typical cats, though. So having just a few vertebrae protected these cats from the worst effects of MS.
Taillessness is caused by the M gene. Itâs an autosomal dominant gene, so a cat needs only one to present with tail-abnormalities; this means a cat with Mm will not have a tail, while a cat with mm will HAVE a tail. A cat who develops with MM dies in utero. They simply donât develop. Honestly, the fact that itâs a lethal combo is pretty telling, so letâs get into detail EXACTLY WHY ITâS LETHAL.
And this is because the M gene punches holes in some pretty important codes. So think of a vertebrae like a pizza pocket: you got the bone on the outside, then thereâs a membrane (meninges), and finally thereâs bundles of nerves on the inside. But the M gene can cause holes in the bone, exposing the meninges. The meninges can be squeezed through the holes (called âMeningocelesâ), which puts a lot of pressure on the nerves inside. You know, kinda like when you squeeze a stress toy.Â
So a cat with MM would develop with LOTS of these holes, exposing the meninges, while a cat with Mm only develops SOME holes exposing the meninges. Thatâs⌠thatâs still pretty bad. The ideal number of holes is zero. Now, these meningoceles CAN naturally heal over time, but the cats often still exhibit urinary incontinence and other issues associated with Manx Syndrome (see the 1979 study linked above).
âOk, but could we just⌠breed Manx cats to have longer tails?â
Unfortunately, we canât. The M gene is highly penetrating and inconsistent. Even if itâs not causing a visible abnormality (ie, lack of tail), itâs still frequently present. This means that even a long-tailed manx still presents issues such as tail kinks. Stumpy cats also tend to develop arthritis at a higher rate than typical catsâ you can even feel it in their tails sometimes. Theyâre so stiff, itâs like grasping a stick. Vets may even opt for amputation to reduce the pain. Considering phantom limb syndrome, even this may not help.
Now, the good news is that there are short-tailed cats WITHOUT Manx Syndrome. The Japanese and American bobtail breeds both get their little cute tails from a completely separate mutation and, as far as I can tell, itâs harmless. Iâm not certain about the Kurilian bobtail.
If you have your heart set on a manx kitty, please, PLEASE go to a rescue and be aware of what to ask. Be sure to ask if the cat has any symptoms and be prepared to handle them if they develop later in life. Even if your breeder-produced kitten turns out just fine, there could be many more that didnât make it. One healthy kitten isnât worth the price of suffering. Breeding should be done to improve a breed, including their health, not merely to stick to the standard perfectly. If the breed includes an inherent amount of suffering, it should not be reproduced further.
These are radiographs of a kitten with fairly extreme manx syndrome. She never made any of her sacral vertebrae, the part of the spine that attaches to the pelvis. She didnât even properly make all her lumbar vertebrae, the post of your spine that makes up your lower back. She couldnât move her legs quite right and she hopped like a frog.
Next steps for the researchers include using the pathway to make terpenes that are new to nature for use in compounds that are too expensive to manufacture with current methods.
Researchers from North Carolina State University have developed an artificial enzymatic pathway for synthesizing isoprenoids, or terpenes, in E. coli. This shorter, more efficient, cost-effective and customizable pathway transforms E. coli into a factory that can produce terpenes for use in everything from cancer drugs to biofuels.
Terpenes are a large class of naturally occurring molecules that are useful in industries ranging from pharmaceuticals and cosmetics to food and biofuels. In nature, terpenes are found in plants and microbes; for example, lycopeneâwhich gives tomatoes their colorâis a terpene.
