ticket to heaven managed to be unique in its genre by changing one single thing
I’ve been holding my tongue to say this in case they were still gonna add it but I think it’s safe to say that they’re not gonna do it so I just wanna say that I’m SO happy that they changed the plotpoint and kiss between Tanrak and the girl in the actual show compared to the pilot trailer. Other than it being overdone in gay stories it also just wouldn’t have made sense in the story.

The plotpoint of using a girl to conform to society works for a gay story but not for a story about a guy who wants to be a priest. Societal norms aren’t the conflict in this story, it’s about the deeply interpersonal relationship one has with god and religion as an institution.
His goal is to become a priest so him being with a girl ,although it wouldn’t be a sin, would still be something that in his (and the priests) eyes leads him astray from the path that God laid out for him. Obviously it wouldn’t be as heavy as with Barth but he isn’t supposed to be with ANYBODY as a priest so he would literally have no benefit from being with a girl.
The conflict isn’t between choosing the path of marrying a girl and live a normal life or choosing to be with the one you love, it’s between being a priest or being with the one you love. Tanrak already isn’t planning on living a normal life.
Adding a girl he’s not actually interested would also just make it a different story. Instead it takes a different angle than how shows like this usually go.
Usually shows like this are about the fear of judgement of society and the church but in this case Tanrak genuinely loves and seeks comfort in God. He isn’t afraid of Him. I think him storing his memories of Barth in his bible and praying to God to not get caught with Barth shows that deep down he doesn’t think God will judge him, he’s afraid the priest will. His love for God is something that is deep inside him. It’s the path of being a priest and his belief in the institution that begin to waver.
Before Barth he genuinely wanted to be a priest. This isn’t something usual so it’s clear that societal norms aren’t the issue for Tanrak. Even in the school most students aren’t expected to be priests or even continue their faith. It’s something he seemingly genuinely wants (or wanted) to do.
Lastly I also just don’t think Tanrak would string someone along a girl like that. Maybe in his confusion and questioning he would but the show has made it a point that Tanrak is so good and kind so it would just feel out of character.
I think that these are the things that make this show so unique despite the fact there’s quite a few stories about religion and gay people. Removing the plotpoint of Tanrak and a girl adds to this and was easily one of the best changes they could’ve made.
I’ve seen some people (on TikTok mostly I don’t actually know about tumblr cus I avoided the tag for spoilers) hating on Simon and saying he didn’t try to understand Willhelm and his situation enough and I’m just like HELLOO??? DID WE WATCH THE SAME SHOW. I already found season two hate about Simon ridiculous BUT FOR SEASON THREE???
Simon has been so understanding and has sacrificed so much. He deleted his socials and all the memories with his friends online for the royal court. He thought the protest of the students was stupid but still joined for Willhelm. He sat down with the people who mock him for his activism despite them doing the same thing for lesser reasons. I would go as far to say he gave up his IDEOLOGIES for Willhelm. He has a lot of political opinions about social issues and the royal court but he’s not allowed to express any of them. He sometimes slips out a negative comment but he has been holding it in for the entire season. He knows he can make an actual difference and is close to someone who can but he can’t do anything about it. His partner doesn’t even seem to care about the issues he’s so passionate about and dismisses them. Yes Wilhelm has his own personal problems but the way he talked about LGBTQ+ issues was honestly hard to watch and you can tell Simon was hurt. He must’ve had bad opinions about Erik after he heard about the initiation thing but he didn’t say anything negative about him because he knows how important he is to Willhelm.
And I think NONE of these are the reasons why he broke up with Willhelm (atleast not the main ones). Simon saw how much the title of crown Prince damaged Willhelm. How broken it made the relationship between him and his mother and how broken he became. Willhelm changed for the crown and lost himself in the process. Simon finally stands on his principles and decides that he no longer wants to support the system that hurt both him and the boy he loves so much. Their relationship can’t survive with that toxic title being held above their own personal feelings
Can you really blame him for not wanting to fully understand the system that is so flawed and damaging to everyone around him?
Anybody interested in a analysis of how Billy Elliot (a movie from 2000) handles the storyline of a boy having an unrequited crush on his best friend a thousand times better then the final season of stranger things despite that one being made 25 years later??
Be prepared for an incoming Billy Elliot rant in the near future cus holy shot that movie is amazing
adding onto bravebyers and wisewheeler au:
for me, this only works if cleradin and byler are ultimately endgame. i’m such a fan of mike the brave and mike wheeler being accidentally pulled into the other’s universe and experiencing the Other Will’s but only if it helps them learn more about themselves in relation to will in order to get back home to their True Will
will the wise is mike the brave’s north star, so when he winds up in 80’s hawkins to find will byers, he’s of course enamored with him, but knows it’s not his True Will — but it’s mike the brave’s duty as will’s paladin to protect him, so he shows will byers love and care like he’s never seen before
mike wheeler can’t function without will byers, so when he ends up in the medieval fantasy world with will the wise, he freaks out for two reasons — he’s without his True Will, but he’s with the childhood fantasy version of him that mike has only dreamed of. cue mike wheeler nerding out over will the wise’s powers while he’s just only sort of tolerating it. bonus points if will the wise unashamedly flirts with mike wheeler to make him nervous. but as they work to figure out how to reverse the body swap, will the wise learns that this mike, while not his True Mike, is true to another will, and just needs a bit of a push to accept himself and his love
bonus points for when the body swap happens but mike wheeler is sent back sooner and finds mike the brave flirting and standing awfully close to will byers and mike, who’s now aware of his feelings after his time with will the wise, flies into a jealous rage surprising both will byers and mike the brave — and so he sends mike the brave home with gusto, finally confessing his love to will byers
byler gets together, and cleradin returns home to each other, as soulmates do
when me and the homie are so intrinsically tied together by a bond stronger than the author’s marriage that we have matching colour palettes

SHIPS ASIDE: they should’ve shown Mike and Will’s friendship more in s5 for the sake of Mike’s character.
Whenever Mike tries to conform/be as normal as possible (Finn’s words btw) he pushes Will away so showing him fully embracing his friendship with Will would’ve shown his development and would’ve been a more powerful message then whatever that coming out scene was + would fit with Mike’s characterisation in season 1, showing that the real Mike is still here.
Because here’s the thing I don’t think people talk enough about the fact that they OMITTED Will from Mike’s storyline. They made their relationship one-sided, only showed Mike’s importance to Will even though Mike needs him just as much (romantic or not) and that’s why he’s so one-dimensional this season.
THEY’RE STILL doing it during this press tour and they probably will in the documentary. They’re gonna act like Will was never part of Mike’s story. We saw this when they didn’t wanna acknowledge the trauma Mike got from s2 with Will, instead focusing on Mike and El, and when they talk about Mike being the heart but never mention who gave him that title. All of the byler scenes were from Will’s perspective, never Mike’s because they want you to see this as a one-sided relationship, not the friendship we’ve seen for years.
taking out Will from Mike’s storyline takes out his loyalty to his friends but also his flaws with his struggle to conform, basically all of his depth. The only thing left is him as the love interest who represses his feelings which never gets properly addressed. THAT’S why s5 bothers me. Byler aside they stripped him from his complexity and reduced him to a love interest yet they don’t even delve deeper into that supposed love in s5.
I’d argue that showing that Mike stopped repressing his emotions and himself towards Will would’ve also strengthened the narrative of him not being able to say I love you to El in s4. You could’ve had him finally say it this season without help because he finally is showing his real self + if they actually made byler’s friendship meaningful outside of Will’s love it would lessen the criticism of Will’s feelings and relationship with Mike being used to further milevens relationship. It would instead focus on Mike and his development and his friendship with Will would narratively back that up, making mileven finally be in a proper relationship with Mike being himself. This would’ve still made Mike an asshole to Will in past seasons but they could’ve ACKNOWLEDGED it, make him apologise and realise that he shouldn’t try to fit in so much. It wouldn’t go against the Mike and El relationship because pushing your minority friends away to seem more normal is something that happens irl. It would’ve given him more depth (though not as much depth as it would’ve been if he himself was also queer but I digress) and make their relationship platonic if that is what they wanted.
So in minimising byler, they in turn made mileven also a very weak relationship cus we DONT see Mike develop, we barely see him at all with El until the end which makes the emotional climax not hit as hard as it could’ve. So even as a love interest he fails as a character.
All he has left is DND and writing cus they sure as hell also don’t make him have interesting familial relationships either.
guess his ending actually was perfect.

Since Young Royals is over I wanted to take a look at some characters and kinda explain how I interpret them as people. (this is hella long but I’m mostly praising the show and how they handled things cus I’m an optimistic girl who loves life)
First of all you have the students of Hillerska. Hated them.
Genuinely cannot stand most of them and I gotta be honest, I was cheering for the school to close down. The toxicity and pure classism that radiates of that school is sickening but I’m afraid not unrealistic. As Willhelm said it’s in the walls of that place, it’s impossible to get it out. Everyone in Hillerska loves to pretend everything is fine. As Wilhelm said EVERYONE IS FAKE. Not just Hillerska but the monarchy and that entire system is too. While there are most likely very close friendships in the school it seems like nobody really knows or tries to understand each other. They refuse to acknowledge the fundamental problems of the school and instead party and just see the school closing as a sad thing.
Vincent is a perfect example of that. I love how they showed that queerness never was a problem for him. Vincent was fine with Nils being queer cus it doesn’t directly effect the system. Simon being a socialist who can possibly talk about the issues of the school was. I also think that he sees August purely as his role. He sees him as a party animal and having connections to the royal family. That’s the role he fulfills so he’s confused as to why he wants to be more than that because position wise he’s in a perfect situation. Him not knowing what August wants as a person and not knowing his best friend was queer just shows to me how little they know each other. How superficial their friendship is.
Nils is interesting. He’s queer and him being a person of Color all give him an interesting position in the whole system. He probably has a little more empathy and is a little less out of touch than his friends (ex. he is the first person to talk about how fucked up their initiation was) but he chooses to ignore it. I think that for him the pros outweigh the cons because at the end of the day he’s still rich and at the top of the foodchain at hillerska so it makes sense that he has no desire to change anything. Which brings me to why I LOVE felice.
Felice is by far my favourite character (Simon is a close second). She very much could turn a blind eye to everything and be like everyone else but she doesn’t want to anymore. I think being a black girl in Hillerska gave her more sympathy and understanding of the problems but I think even then she could’ve dealt with it like Nils because lets be honest racism is everywhere. But she realises if it’s already this bad for her she can’t imagine how it is for the people of the lower class. It made her see how fucked the hierarchy is and realise how deep it is engraved in the school. She realises that not even her best friends want to truly understand her struggles because it’s awkward for them (I said in another post her friends weren’t as bad as Vincent but honestly they’re just as bad). That realisation made her not wanna go to New York. She doesn’t wanna ignore her problems like everyone else but face them head on and goes to Sara. The one person who at the end wasn’t fake to her.
Im absolutely in love with Sara and Felice’s relationship. They kinda parallel Simon and Wilhelm in a way because Sara was the first truly honest person in Felice’s life just like Simon was to Willhelm although Felice and Sara are the platonic version of that (and while I loved that it portrayed the importance of friendship, my lesbian ass was really wishing they would’ve kissed like the TENSION but that’s just me). I also think that’s why the betrayal of her with August was so painful. She couldn’t care less about August, she cared about the fact that the one person she thought she always could rely on did that to her.
I also loved Sara this season. She’s a very flawed person yes but you could always tell her apologies were sincere. You could tell she had strong feelings for August but she was able to put Felice’s, Simon’s and most importantly her own feelings first. I was really scared they were gonna make her and August get back together in the end (especially with the conversation about giving people second chances in reference to her dad being also possibly about August) but they made sure to stick with her character development.
That brings me to August. He’s a really interesting character to me and I never know how to feel about him. He has done some horrible shit and at first I wanted him to suffer or do something big to try to make things right and I didn’t like how he never truly got his karma but I like how open they left his character. He obviously has some issues (eating disorder, trauma from his initiation,…) but he doesn’t ever delve deeper into them. He acknowledges the things he does and is obviously very sorry but just like the rest of the people in Hillerska and the Monarchy he ignores the causes of it. He never acknowledges his eating disorder. He’s probably aware that he has a problem (cus Simon pointed it out) but ignores it. He ignores the reasoning Sara gives for them not working out and gives her solutions that in the grand scheme will not change things. He still has huge respect for Eric despite what he did to him and the fact that it clearly left lasting traumas and just brushes it off. He longs for the Crown Prince role not even thinking about the harm that it can cause him. I said that he didn’t get karma but that’s not true. I think that the Crown Prince title is a curse and even if Wilhelm didn’t mean it that way, I think he got his final karma at the end by passing that curse down to him.
I love how they handled Wilhelm and Simon. Wilhelm had just like the rest of Hillerska and the monarchy the tendency to ignore things. Simon was the one who had to give him a wake up call and break things off. Simon forced him to face reality. He didn’t understand why Simon saw the title of Crown Prince as such a curse. Everyone ( ex. His mother) around him kept saying how much of a privilege it was that he never took a step back to question if it really was such an honour. His mothers words were so deeply engraved into him that it took him a while to finally be able to hear Simon. Simon wasn’t the reason why he didn’t want to be the Crown Prince, he just made him realise he never wanted any of this in the first place. It was never about Simon it was the fact that Wilhelm as a person was never really for the Monarchy. He loves his mother and the connection to his brother but he finally was able to let it go. He knows his brother still would’ve loved him but the perfect image of his brother the Crown Prince is gone. I don’t think he’s ever gonna forgive August but he has let it go and given him the title he so desperately wanted. His hatred towards him is not strong enough to keep the title of Crown Prince. In the relationship he was the one who needed to change. Sure Simon also went through growth and had to have a lot of understanding but it was Wilhelm who had to realise his core teachings and the way he thought of life were very flawed. He had to be his own person outside of the system that held him down so desperately. And even the mother understands that. She will always be part of the monarchy but she acknowledges that it nearly destroyed her and realises that she doesn’t want that to happen to her son and lets him go.
Hillerska, the monarchy and the classist hierarchy is not gonna change. But some people can. That’s why I think in the end there was no song about revolution. They didn’t have one. Sara, Felice, Wilhelm and Simon were the ones who truly got away from everything. They were able to get away from the schackles of the system and leave it behind. Even if Hillerska did reopen I doubt they would go back. They didn’t revolutionise anything other then themselves. There wasn’t a revolution but an evolution of themselves.
I think that’s a beautiful message. You can’t always change the bad things around you but you can change the things about yourself that were caused by the bad things around you. You can do and be better even when the world isn’t.
Looking through my old posts and I absolutely ate with this one, I hate that it’s like my least popular 😭
