there is a desert in her mind, wind weaving patterns in the grand dunes of sand she has no hope of deciphering. she is not, of course, the sole member of their merry band with such afflictions ; there is the cleric, and then, of course ... mallory.

she's busying herself with her mortar and pestle. astarion could use more poison for his daggers, and they're running low on health potions. with the way things have been going, they're sure to need a lot more if their aim is survival.

a voice draws her out of her thoughts. tisa blinks, then blinks again to adjust her eyes to the light of the campfire, his figure cast in an orange hue. it suits him, she muses, and finds herself startled at the thought. feel it indeed.

she could've dodged the question far more neatly than that, if her goal had been to deceive him. he feels oddly certain of that. it does however, place the subject firmly in his palms to broach first, which is...

his mind summons up, unbidden, an image of dogs circling one another. picking out the weaknesses in their smaller kin, determining where they sit in the pecking order with bared tooth and bloody claw if they must. he doesn't know why he knows that, where he's seen it before, but he understands why his thoughts have conjured it.

there is a hierarchy and on some level, he is meant to establish it. with everyone, most likely, but something in the back of his mind has pinned her as the most pressing threat to his claim. one that would be safer to crush now, sooner rather than later.

he only realizes that the thought isn't entirely his own when he watches the careful side-eye he's being given, and the spell breaks. his wings rustle softly against his spine, the only external sign of his unease.

"you are similarly lacking in your memory." he's careful to watch his tone. she's not below him, they're equals. they've helped one another. "but you are familiar to me. not just from the nautiloid. from... somewhere else. you feel it, too."

his reaction is not promising. admittedly, she may have broached the stranger's bubble by getting close enough to almost stand toe-to-toe. on the other hand, she only got closer because he didn't seem to have heard her the first time.

now he's almost pressing himself into the bench, like he's desperate to get away.

"hey-" sheri holds up her hands and takes a couple steps back. not sure if this is the right move, but it's the move that she takes. "i said 'what are you doing out here by yourself?' cause i saw your fingers turning blue... snow's starting up. wouldn't want that to turn to frostbite."

she cants her head, snow shifting off some of her hair. "you waiting for somebody or just... lost in thought?"

she steps back, out of his space, and air suddenly comes a little easier.

mal hesitates, but upon flexing his fingers experimentally on the metal of the bench finds that she was entirely correct. they've gone almost completely numb. he dislodges and lifts his hands to his face, slowly rubbing them together and breathing a soft huff of warm air over the frigid skin.

it doesn't help, much. he must've been colder than he thought; it barely fogs up the air around him.

"... no. i..." do not traumadump on a stranger, you absolute freak "... yeah. just lost in thought. thank you, for..." he falters, swallowing, "for that. i hadn't noticed the snow. was i in your way?"

he makes a move to get up, expression unchanging but his brows lifting in apology.
