who needs enemies when you have your own brain
I actually almost hate it when some scrap of trash that I didn't throw out because it might be useful somewhere actually turns out useful. Like oh, won't you look at that. I did find an use for it after all. Now I'll never get myself to throw anything out again. The last thing we should be doing is to encourage this behaviour.
not to vague anyone but switching from spotify to youtube music is not raging against the machine <3
I saw the "youtube music is raging against the machine" post again so instead of ripping someone's throat out with my teeth here is Arthur's Official Media Privacy For Dummies Post <3
My credentials are that I have 700 songs I didn't pay for on a refurbished ipod from 2007 and it's AWESOME. (PS backmarket.com for refurbished tech they have lots of old ipods if you're into that. But also phones and laptops and shit for cheap.)
First off. Reddit.com/r/piracy forever and ever. Go through their masterpost they have literally anything you could ever want. You will never pay for media of any sort again. The people of reddit are smarter than me.
If you currently use Spotify and wish to stop, here is where I would start:
1. Bandcamp!! If you want to financially support your favorite artists it's Bandcamp.
Plug your playlists into merch table they will do the hard work for you here <3
2. Spotidownloader
Put your playlists in they will spit a download link out it's so easy. All the metadata is there and everything.
They can only do 100 songs at a time so it's not ideal for a bigger library but it works fine for what it is.
3. Lucida
Awesome for full albums or individual songs if you're just looking for a few things and not transferring a whole library.
3. Newpipe
https://spotalike.com/en
A handy youtube clone that's good for streaming or downloading music and videos.
And finally, this isn't piracy advice but you don't need daily curated playlists and you definitely don't need yearly listening stats. Listen to the bands your friends listen to. Keep a list of songs people recommend to you. Try to find a local radio show or a college radio channel. Go to local shows. Be curious about genres and new bands. Put effort into curating and owning your music library, it's worth it.
btw it's not spelled "Maori", it's MΔori. the tohutΕ (the line above the vowel) is important for the pronunciation of the word. if you don't have the tohutΕ on your keyboard (it should be on your phone keyboard at least), it's "Maaori" as the tohutΕ lengthens the vowel it's placed over. never Maori, preferably MΔori but Maaori in a pinch. thanks
psa double chins and not perfect jawlines are fucking awesome and hot and we should never be unkind about them ever. yes, even yours. no it does not make you look bad, yes people love and cherish you deeply with no regards to your appearance, yes your double chin or not perfect jawline ALSO is really beautiful because people are beautiful regardless of their physicality
I miss when we lived in a time where I wasnβt worried about accidentally engaging with ai slop
Itβs getting harder to spot ai because itβs unfortunately getting better at mimicking the original work and style of whoever they fed to the algorithm and Iβve already seen an influx of annoying people accuse real artists of their work being ai, when in reality the ai slop looks like that persons art because it stole from them
If you live somewhere where it gets darker now, hereβs a few reminders:
- You can put up fairy lights at any time and leave them up for as long as you want
- Get out if you can, while there is still light outside
- Make it as cosy for yourself as you can. Dial up the comfort and the cosy, whatever that looks like to you
- Make plans to look forward to
- More people than we sometimes realize are affected, be cosy with your friends in person, call them or have a facetime hang out with tea or a movie. Maybe go for a short walk together or meet up for coffee, so you get out a bit too.
- You have made it through the darkness before, you can do it again. If you think back and remember something that helped you the last time, draw on that again
unfuck google drive by shooting gemini
Hey folks! Google is fucking you via sneaky enshittification again!
Want the shit in your google drive to load instantly again, instead of taking for-fucking-ever?
Open your gdrive (web OR app) Settings > Manage Apps
Gemini was checked "use as default" (and i sure the fuck didn't set it that way, this was a silent push)
Nuke that, and suddenly, folders that took up to a minute to populate and sort do so in a fraction of a second.

a part of me dies every time a grown woman in my life uses the terms "girl math" or "girl dinner" or what fucking ever like i don't care if it's silly or ironic because there are people out there who do not see it as silly or ironic and use it to embolden their misogynistic beliefs and you should not have to demean yourself because of a dumb online trend when you are a smart capable talented complex human being can you please treat your mind and body with the love they deserve
while i hope the AI boom dies out i also hope we start acknowledging data center water overconsumption as it's own unique issue because like. it's not AI itself that harms the environment it's the hardware hosting it, right? same reason nfts and cryptocurrency were also bad for the environment. the root problem isn't going away so long as we allow big companies to continue hitching their wagon to the next big tech trend. i worry if they don't get stronger regulation we'll just be repeating the same issue whenever the next toy comes along.
man the public defender discourse pisses me off so bad. yeah. yeah I do think that every single person deserves representation. yeah that includes people who *have* committed rape and murder and abuse. when I say every single person I mean every single person. if your idea of justice excludes one person it excludes everyone. next question
Welp. Google's AI horseshit has arrived. And I'm not complying. They can pry my ID out of my cold dead hands. I will simply go elsewhere. Remember folks, DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR IDs. Do not comply. Resist, fight it, use other browsers or sources beyond youtube and google controlled services. Call them. Email them. Make noise. Fight back.
I've been using Google as my main mail service since 2006, and every single account or service I've ever signed up for was made with that address. For a long time I thought it'd be impossible to divorce myself from Google.
It took less than 5 minutes to switch to a ProtonMail account, less than 2 hours to download and/or offload every byte of data from my Google account, and less than 3 days to change every single account or service I've ever signed up for to the new address.
As of today, the only single one I have that's still tied to it is YouTube. It's the only thing I'd lose access to if I deleted my Google acount entirely.
They really, really want you to believe that it's a hassle to switch to a different email system. But it's not. Most websites and/or services allow you to change the email address associated with it.
I've been using Google for almost 2 decades and it only took a few days to move everything. It's not a painful sacrifice; it's an easy change that, frankly, has absolutely been worth it.
Proton Shoutout
You can and should switch to a free, encrypted Proton email account. You also get all of the below perks. For free. There is no trick. It is paid for by the people with paying plans. I am one of them. The (completely functional) free tier is there to entice you into getting a paid account with even more perks. (It worked on me.) But there's no penalty or pressure for staying with the free account.
Also get your stuff off the google drive and put it on Proton's drive. It is encrypted. Only you with your password can access it. Not even Proton can see what you put in there.
Switch everything away from Google. It's easy and it's important. Read above, click the link for Proton, download your gmail and switch.
I second the recommendation for Proton and the sentimentvthat moving away from google any way you can is important!
That said; switching email adresses is not easy. Especially for people who have been professionally active for years. It's impossible to reach out to every single person who has your address to let them know you swicthed.
But, here's what you can do
Give new people the new address
Set up your gmail to forward incoming emails to the new address
Every time you receive an email from a website/app/service, go to that site/app and change your address to the new one (this way it's less overwhelming cos you're not trying to change them all at once)
Where feasible, tell people you have frequent email exchanges with that your email adress is changing & email them from the new one
And lastly; accept that google is so, so deeply entrenched in our lives that it is genuinely difficult to excise it completely. Do not feel guilty about google services you have to continue using. Just focus on the changes you can reasonably make and take it one step at a time. Removing google just from one small area of your life is much better than thinking you have to do it all at once getting overwhelmed, and putting it off indefinitely.
