listen I don't care if it's cringey for an almost-30-year-old to finally be getting into silly fandom shit like AMVs and cosplay
I finally have the means to do all the stuff that I didn't have the money or time or spoons or resources or support to do when I was younger
and it's great
I didn't get to be a fandom artist nerd when I was 14, I was too busy being violently depressed and having literally no friends and living in extreme poverty and just kinda trying to survive hell
there's not a lot of opportunity to beg your parents for money to put together a cosplay in that sort of environment, you feel me
Iām thankful for my 10th grade history teacher because:
āI have to teach the book.ā He said. āYou have to read it and I have to give a test on it to make sure you know whatās in it.ā
āOkay,ā we said. āThis is what school is.ā
He also said ābut I donāt have any rules that say I canāt teach you more than one book.ā
āBut this isnāt English class,ā we complained.
āNo itās not,ā he replied as he handed out photocopies of a different book I do not have the name of. I would learn later that he paid for the photocopies himself, because he could not afford to buy a set of books for us, and the school wouldnāt help. We had to turn in the photocopies at the end of the lesson. Heād done this for years, and the packets of paper were sets of folders containing well read photocopies and some pages were crumbly and heād replace whole packets or pages in a single packet at a time. He had a whole cabinet full of these folders, broke down by chapter, out of a different book. Some of the packets included photocopies from more than one book, some news articles, a couple academic papers. We were not always required to read those, but we were promised extra credit if we did.
āWrite me an essay,ā heād say.
āUgh,ā we groaned. āWhat about?ā
āThe differences between whatās in the packet and whatās in your books.ā
And we would. Heād accept full essays and heād accept a simple list of differences, but that was always an assignment. Point out the differences.
āWhich fact do you believe?ā He would ask us.
āThe packet,ā weād answer.
āWhy?ā Heād ask.
āBecause they donāt want us to have them,ā weād answer.
āGood,ā heās smile. āWith this chapter, Iām not going to give you a packet. I want you to make your own packet based on the information in this chapter in your government supplied textbook.ā
āUgh,ā we groaned.
But we learned how to do some simple research, and we were told that Wikipedia could be edited by anyone, but everyone that edited had to present sources. We had to come up with twenty pages worth of extra information on the chapter in our textbook. The textbookās chapter was something like ten pages long. We had to do our essay/lists on what was left out/added/changed. It was a good two week long project.
āWhy am I making you do this?ā
āBecause itās busy work,ā someone answered.
He frowned. āBecause one day youāll be presented something as fact and youāll have to decide if it is fact or not.ā
āHow do we know the difference?ā
āMaybe one day one of you will grow up and be able to give a simple answer to that question because I donāt have that answer.ā
āYou just didnāt want to do the work to make a packet yourself, huh?ā
He smiled. āThat is an advantage to having minions.ā
And then he laughed like an evil vampire and we watched a movie.
This is one of those Tumblr things where I donāt much care if itās a true story or not, because itās an extremelyĀ good idea for how to teach history ā and, based on my own super-brief stint in attempting to teach young stubborn kids via unconventional-but-effective methods (primarily with the goal of feeling like I was educating them in a helpful andĀ lasting way), this is a fantastic idea.
You know. I get a lot of notes and tags on this post saying āand everyone clappedā and honestly, thats fine. I havenāt been in tenth grade in over fifteen years. This is paraphrased based on the experience of being in this manās classroom for a whole school year. I 100% donāt remember his exact words or phrasing. This is a ~takeaway~ from the lessons this particular teacher gave us. I AM happy people donāt trust itās authenticity because you shouldnāt trust everything you read. Thatās the whole reason I wrote this in the first place.
However, the vampire voice was real. He was a character named Count Vlad who knew history because āhe lived through it first hand.ā He came out every time we watched a movie in that class, which we did often. We were way too old for this sort of teaching. We knew it. He knew it. He didnāt care. Count Vlad critiqued movies based on historical events with how accurate or false they were for the sake of selling movie tickets.
He was honestly one of my favorite teachers.
Good for this person. This is exactly what you do. Screw the job.
I had a job that made me work an all nighter, 30 hours straight, over Thanksgiving. I resigned that Monday and it was one of the most satisfying decisions Iāve ever made.
Part 3:
Someone once told me about a thing in management called āBus Factorā. I donāt know if itās widely known under that name or just this personās quirky name for the phenomenon, but it basically means āa number of people who have to be hit by a bus to kill a projectā. A big company having BF of 1 is very very very bad.
Fatphobic doctors deserve to have their licenses striped away for all time, all money and assets earned during their time as a doctor repossessed, and if they get hit by a bus I may or may not be driving, so be it.
[image description: a bullet-pointed list of white text on a red background. the list is titled,Ā āHelpful Phrases at the Doctorās Office,ā and the bullet points say:
Show me a study where the majority of subjects succeeded at the amount of weight loss you are suggesting.
Do thin people get this health problem? What do you recommend for them?
Due to a low rate of success and serious irreversible side effects, including death, weight loss surgery is not an option.
The research Iāve seen shows that the vast majority of people who attempt weight loss fail, and many actually gain weight long term.
Please provide me with evidence-based medicine and the opportunity for informed consent.
Shame is bad for my health. I would ask you to first do no harm, and provide me with shame-free healthcare.
In our limited time, Iād like to focus on [what I came in for.]

JKR literally wrote a manifesto against nonbinary people and trans men, and smeared autistic people while she was at it, so can y'all please stop acting like the JKR bullshit is somehow an issue unique to trans women only?
Stop acting like this isn't a community-wide issue that affects ALL trans people. Especially autistic trans people.
Our trans brothers & nonbinary siblings in the UK deserve better than this. Stop forgetting them. Stop erasing them.
Since some people are unaware of the breadth and depth of JKR's ableism:
In her award winning(!!!) essay, Rowling explained that she believes autistic trans men and boys (like myself) are not mentally competent to consent to our own medical care.
We're easily influenced, you see. Gullible. Liable to be led astray by militant trans activists, social media, and the glamour and popularity that comes with being transgender.
JK Rowling, outspoken feminist and champion for the rights of women, wants to deny medical autonomy to "girls" because she thinks we're overly-emotional, frivolous, and susceptible to peer pressure.
She has spoken directly about her belief that autistic "girls", especially, should not be allowed to transition because we're intellectually incapable of forming, recognising, and articulating our own identities, and especially vulnerable to "social contagion".
But, of course, the law doesn't (shouldn't) discriminate, and if autistic teens and/or adults can't legally consent to treatment of gender dysphoria, we can't legally consent to the treatment of anything. We won't be able to access any treatment or medication without approval from a responsible adult.
The ability of trans kids to consent to their own medical care has already been the subject of a court case (Bell vs Tavistock). It was overturned on appeal, but one of the potential consequences of that specific case was that cis teens could have lost access to hormonal contraception without parental consent.
If Rowling gets what she's said she wants, the knock-on effect may well be that autistic people in the UK lose the ability to live independently.
This is one of the things she's putting her social and financial clout into. Her ongoing activism is a danger to the lives and wellbeing of all trans people and all autistic people in the UK and abroad.
The problem with having lesbian moms is you try to be super cool and cut all your hair off and buy a leather jacket and wear boots all the time and then you go to some event in your neighborhood and all these women three times your age start cooing āoh you look JUST like your mother when she was your age, my gosh what a blast from the past, oh I just love your hairā
And let me be very clear, okay: Iāve seen pictures of my mom when she was my age, and she looked cooler than I ever will. My mom had exactly my fashion sense except she was two point five degrees butcher and habitually took over government buildings. My other mom was about six degrees butcher than that, and SHE had a motorcycle. Both of them have been charged with felony arson. Iām the prep member of my family and thereās nothing I can do about it.
Please tell me at some point in your life some dick was like āweāre calling your parents over your behaviorā only to have a bigger, more badass version of you come strolling in
Look obviously that happened many many times, usually with misogynist or ableist teachers. But I have a BETTER story than that, which is that when I was in 3rd grade, I went to this tiny alternative hippy schoolāit was a regular public school, it was just small and staffed/run by hippie communistsāand my 3rd grade teacher was a woman who had been in an organization with my mother, and they had done direct action together more than a few times. Weāll call her D. One day I was sitting in Dās class, eight years old and bored out of my mind, and I scratched my name into the back of my plastic chair with a rock. Was this reasonable behavior? No. Why did I do it? Only the gods can say. I donāt actually remember doing the scratching, I just remember looking at the rock in my hand and my name on the chair and going,Ā āHUH. Thatās not good.āĀ So obviously I got caught, bc I couldnāt reasonably convince anyone that I wasnāt the one who had done it, since it was MY NAME, and as punishment for this act of arbitrary vandalism I was sentenced to recess detention for two weeks. It was October so this included Halloween. Halloween, to be clear, is a high holy day in San Francisco, and I was devastated to miss the informal festivities that would be occurring at recess that day, and I wept and wailed about this at home for some time until my mother decided that this was disproportionate punishment and took it into her own hands to do something about it.Ā Ā So my mom walks into Dās office on a day when my mother does not have to be at work at a scheduled time, but D has to get her students from the yard in about ten minutes, and my mom sits down and says to her old friend and comrade, āMiranda is really upset about having detention on Halloween.ā And D explains to my mother why the detention was issued, what the circumstances were, and my mother nods, and listens, and doesnāt argue, and doesnāt show any sign of getting up from her chair. And just says againĀ āSheās really upset about having detention on Halloween.āĀ And D looks at my mother, and she looks at the clock in her office, which is telling her that she has to be on the yard in 2 minutes now, and then looks at my mother again, who shows no sign of having anywhere to be, my mother with whom D has organized and successfully executed multiple sit-ins and takeovers of government & corporate offices, and D says,Ā āOkay, she doesnāt have to have detention on Halloween.ā
Tell your moms that we love them.

An important update!
im also a little bit extremely angry about the assumption - by my family or doctors or the government or whatever - that my number one priority wrt to my health would be anything other than "feel as good as possible"
it feels almost transgressive to say like "actually, if working isn't going to contribute to my quality of life, I don't care about it" and "The only reason I would want to reduce my amount of medication is if it's impacting my quality of life."
my neurologist said in our first appt like "obviously we want you to be on as few medications as possible" and i did not succeed in mentioning that, actually, i will take 50 pills every day for the rest of my life if it means i get to feel okay most of the time.
like i don't even really care about being healthy. "being as healthy as possible" is not my #1 priority. my #1 priority is feeling good, followed closely by being able to do things i want to do. 'taking fewer pills' and 'exercising' don't even make the list. those are not ends, those are means.
hell yes - and this reminds me of the blistering ableism behind medical professionals calling someone "drug-seeking" who is, in fact, pain-relief seeking

i can't believe i have to fucking say it because i'm an educator so like how is it possible nobody else has said this.
unless a person is actively making materials/etc for children, they do not need to worry about your kid.
your child gets respect as a human. that's it. nobody's private life/artistic endeavors/unrelated interests must be controlled for the sake of your kid.
educators and athletes and artists do not have to live in chastity because your kid might see us on our days off. we do not owe it to your kid to only write poems about bunnies and only sing songs about tying your shoes. i do not care how much a person has given to children, if they are acting as an adult in adult spheres, they are allowed to. they are adults. it is your job as a caregiver to raise your kid and keep them out of adult spheres, not our job to keep ourselves out of those spheres just in case.
guess what! adult role models are going to bars and hooking up and dancing and being adults! this is so they have the mental energy to do all the child-centric things.
"it makes me feel weird to picture them like that!" i don't know how to tell you this but actors aren't actually their roles. the customer-service personality your waitress has is probably not her actual personality. the way teachers interact with students is not the way that they interact with their private lives, and it shouldn't be.
"this tells kids this kind of behavior is okay!" actually it's showing kids a normal and natural progression of a person's life, boundaries, and bodily autonomy. it's showing kids that adults are dynamic human beings. kids already know this. they know there's places they're not allowed and things they don't understand yet. it's just that you have icky feelings because you were raised in a society with black-and-white morality.
celebrities don't owe your children perfection, modesty, sobriety. and you know something? it's way healthier when they don't. "this is a person, who gets up every morning and does their job - but also has adult interests, which you'll learn about later" is way healthier as a role model than "you should be perfect like the curated image of this person and if you're not perfect you should be deeply ashamed."
anyway. idk why "think of the children!!!!" is making a comeback as a popular stance. but to be clear? it's a way of saying "this makes me feel uncomfortable, but i don't know why, and i don't feel like untangling it, so i'll blame you for it and hope you feel guilty about my children."
hi, op here. do not make this about "fandom drama." don't do it.
it is about the policing of black bodies, of minority communities, of queer expression, and of women in the workforce.
it is about real people in the real world. the notes are full of people who express the same thing: teachers who cannot buy wine with their dinner, social workers who have to cover up perfectly appropriate tattoos, queer folk who worry about bringing up their partner in the workplace. there are real-life, horrific, and ongoing consequences for this. real people get fired because they were in a picture holding a single beer, or they were seen wearing a too-saucy costume at halloween, or they kissed their partner in public on their day off. women have been fired for being the victim of revenge porn; their illegally distributed image instead just being seen as evidence against their character. there are queer artists that are actively being silenced because of this rhetoric. trans people fear using the fucking bathroom because of this rhetoric.
this is about the return of white nationalist slogans to a public stage. this is about how we are even seriously debating the phrase "think of the children". the children are not thought of during discussions of climate change, gun control, educational spending, free health care, student debt, access to childcare, access to food, or just getting the fucking vaccine and wearing a mask.
they do not care about the children. they want to protect their own bigotry by manipulating your empathy towards kids. that's what this post is about.
please acknowledge the systemic, ongoing process of erasing identity and freedom. it is not just some "internet discussion". it is a legitimate, scary, and powerful force that is hugely detrimental to the lives of those around you.

do you guys wanna hear the latest drama among librarians across the country
Ask and I shall deliver
Okay so the latest drama is apparently there is a man calling across random libraries across the country and heās asking for information on a court case specifically Brady v Maryland and when he calls he claims he doesnāt have a computer so he asks for the case to be read aloud to him
Hereās the thing. He is asking for uh not legal reasons but umm because he wellā¦.he wellā¦heās yknow š³ And heās called multiple libraries and done this and the FBI is supposedly involved and canāt catch this pervert thatās just calling libraries and getting off on librarians reading about some random court case
And apparently the dude called my work! And I wasnāt there for it but they put him on hold cause they were like āis it himā¦ā so they got a male coworker to answer the phone and he immediately hung up and like hdjdhsjshhs?!? What is happening!!
I TALKED TO HIM. He is absolutely masturbating while you read the court case. He has hit MULTIPLE libraries ACROSS the country. Heās called my library twice and another local library last week.Ā
So if you get a blocked number asking you to read Brady v Maryland wiki article while heĀ āwrites it out by hand,ā hang up. Log it, tell your managers.Ā

Follow Resist Line 3 on Twitter.
[Image description: a Twitter thread by account Resist Line 3 @ResistLine3 saying:
#Line3 would be a disaster for life on our planet, all the way from the pipeline's source to its destination. Here's why.
At the source of Line 3 is the tar sands extraction industry in Alberta, Canada. Here, Canadian oil workers clear-cut ancient forests to get at the oil tar beneath. These forests are one of the best carbon sinks on the planet - but when they're gone, they're gone.
Once the trees are gone, all of the life-sustaining topsoil is then scraped off of the ground. Without it, nothing will grow here again. Beneath that soil is bitumen, what @Enbridge wants - the most impure form of oil on this Earth.
Bitumen is so impure that it needs to be mixed with many toxic chemicals to even get the tar out of it, thus creating massive pools of toxic liquids called tailing ponds. The ponds are so toxic that strobe lights and sound cannons need to be used to keep birds away.
Leaving the destroyed earth of northern Alberta behind, the diluted bitumen is sent through the Line 3 oil pipeline that goes south into North Dakota, crosses Minnesota, and eventually arrives in Superior, Wisconsin. But the journey is far from painless.
Since 2002, @Enbridge has reported 307 hazardous liquid incidents in its operations. On average, that's one toxic spill every 20 days, totaling 66,059 barrels of hazardous liquids. How many more spills can the land take before it's irreparably poisoned?
As a matter of fact, the old Line 3 was responsible for the largest inland oil spill in US history, back in 1991 in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. The existing #Line3 has already caused dozens of oil spills on treaty land. A bigger pipeline will just spill more.
And when construction is finished on the new Line 3, @Enbridge wants to abandon the old Line 3 to corrode away in the ground. Contaminants from the pipe will likely make their way into the soil, the water, and eventually all life in the surrounding area.
This tar, marked by ecocide at every point of its journey, eventually arrives in Superior, Wisconsin. From here, some of it will be shipped south towards Chicago, and some will go east towards Michigan. The Michigan-bound oil will eventually travel through the Great Lakes.
And if the pipeline in the Great Lakes ruptures (which pipelines always do eventually - especially old and corroded pipelines such as that one), it will contaminate the source of 84% of the fresh water on this continent. Thatās water we depend on to drink. /end ID]
