Previous efforts to unmask the people behind Libgen have failed.
if they succeed at bringing libgen down it will probably be the single biggest blow against information access in the third world.
i don't understand the recent "how often do men think of the roman empire" trend. one of the most well-known recent academic and popular historians of the roman empire is a woman, mary beard. why do this? it isn't cute or funny if you think about the implications for more than five seconds
"it's so crazy how men think about the roman empire, or the civil war, or history so often! i don't do that because i'm a woman. i think about poetry and literature instead, which men don't do" please stop this new girl dinner but for intellectual pursuits
yeah pop history is really strongly gender-branded because it's a commercial product like any other. They gotta sell ads on the history channel so they also gotta maintain the premise that the history they're selling is Boy History or Girl History to pitch specific demos to advertisers, and in the process that such a distinction is anything but a farce.
if you look at a professional historian's bookshelf and look up the authors on books written after about 1950, it'd be a very unusual specialty (or possibly a weird choice on the historian's part) where the gender divide is more extreme than 60-40, and which way it goes is completely arbitrary
this isn't even a feature of historiographic difference, there are plenty of women writing great-man history (and often as not about noteworthy women) and plenty of men writing domestic, economic, etc history. this isn't to say that women's role in the academy couldn't come a long way, but it is to say that pop history is extremely ideologically limited by its commercial nature and part of that ideological limitation is the idea that some people "should" or "naturally" want to read about specific topics
Really good post all around but I'm adding a sidenote because when I googled Mary Beard I learned she said in October 2001 "the United States had it coming" re: 9/11 and I think that's pretty cool

Bash Back! Is BackâReviving an Insurrectionary Queer Network
http://crimethinc.com/BashBack2023
In 2007, in the course of preparations for actions against the 2008 Republican National Convention, an insurrectionary network of queer anarchists formed under the umbrella Bash Back! Over the following three years, this network participated in a vibrant array of confrontations, organizing efforts, and publications, expanding and intensifying the struggle against sex and gender normativity. Today, as fascists and other bigots renew their assault on queer and trans people and anarchists fight back, there is an urgent need for renewed coordination and innovation. In this context, participants in the original Bash Back! network have called for a new Bash Back! convergence in September 2023.
To explore the legacy of Bash Back! and what it has to offer today, we interviewed participants in the original Bash Back! who are helping to organize the upcoming convergence.
whenever i see a centrist youtube documentarian uncritically cite kiwifarms as a source im just like, damn you totally would have fallen for nazi propaganda at the time
"but they've exposed real predators before" ok and im sure some of the jewish criminals showcased in the stormer were real criminals, but the early nazis benefitted from it being suspiciously easy to find horrible dirt on jewish people. please think for a second, notice that your investigative journalism becomes just a little more breezy when your target is a trans woman, and think about why that might be
One of my neighbors turned their lawn into a community garden that they maintain and just let everyone in the neighborhood come pick goodies from. It says âfuck youâ to capitalism in so many different, delightful ways. Fuck lawns, fuck HOAs, fuck lack of community, fuck lack of fresh food, fuck food prices.
Iâm gonna make âem cookies.
Hereâs a picture!
Screenshot of a short ap news article on the subject for context/sourcing.
ah, the ol fascist "service guarantees citizenship" routine.
"oh, young people have a tendency to not be nationalistic? let's make it harder for them to effect changes to make the political landscape more to their liking by removing one of the most fundamental actions they can do" (not that most of them even vote, not that they feel represented by anyone in the running, not that things aren't rigged with gerrymandering and the electoral college and lobbying and and and and)
full of rage
whenever something good happens in this godforsaken country, or any other country in latam, there is always some dipshit saying something about how shamefull it is that the US is losing at progressiveness. I swear to god, people in the global north are so fucking condescendent. You people have not let go of the enlightenment's ideas of progress, as if everyone else is a buch of backwater people taht cannot possibly have complex thoughts about their lives and society.
Argentina has some of the best trans policies in the world, transfeminicide is typified in its law. Transfeminicide is also now typified in Mexico city's law, after the hard efforts of trans women who fought to get this done. The US and many countries in Europe don't even have feminicide typified, which Mexico and many otehr coutnries in Latam ahve had for years. People here organize and figth for their rights despite having to go against the goverment, the police, organized crime and the influence of the global north that actively works to stop progress in the global south for its own interests, often getting killed for it. Did you know Mexico is considered the most dangerous place to be a journalist? And yet people don't stop.
I have sat at meetings with different feminist organizations across Latin America and they are have very profound things to say about these topics in the context of living in wars, under imperialism, with a fragmented identity due to colonization, etc. There is very rich literature on all kinds of social problems that you guys don't know about because it's written in a language you don't speak and your academies have long looked down on. We don't have to learn from you or follow your example, we don't need you.
This person genuinely thinks this take is intelligent and serious
Fun Fact: Nomadic horse-raising people in the Persian Steppes had feminizing hormone regimes long before Plato was born.
Stupid anarkiddies, how are you supposed to have trans healthcare without a bureaucratic institution of authority to put you on waitlists and deny you medication if you donât meet their standards of gender performance?
elf sex: 3 to 12 effeminate twinks coo and giggle in a sensual pile in the woods. sometimes the elf queen joins and pretends theyâre her baby birds
dwarf sex: a pair of strong able bodied warriors tacitly agree to mate as equals under a binding contract of tomelike thickness, with consent from the council
gnome sex: married couple of 200 years finally gives in to temptation and call upon the stork to deliver their child, then sleep in separate beds completely satisfied
Skills for Revolutionary Survival: 1. Trauma Medical Gear - Indigenous Anarchist Federation
We have seen over the past few months of the Black-led uprising against police violence that we will all be met with extreme violence at the hands of police, national guard, military contractors, fascist militia members, and alt-right lone-wolfs. What is the one thing we can all collectively do to ensure that our casualties are given a fighting chance to live after being attacked? Carry medical gear for trauma treatment and learn basic trauma first aid.
Everyone reading this, if you can spare the money or can fundraise, get at least one Individual First Aid Kit (IFAK). These are kits designed to save lives during traumatic injuries (i.e. explosions, stabbings, vehicle strikes, shootings). These are not your typical first aid kits, replacing things like Tylenol with mass bleeding response items. Usually sold as tactical gear to military and police, the violence on the streets and the deaths of Black Lives Matter protesters at the hands of right-wing attackers has shown the immediate need for all of us to start carrying life saving gear.
In this piece, we will look at what gear a beginner should buy, who to buy from to avoid dangerous counterfiet medical gear, how to get training & practice, and the ways we can use this gear/training to keep each other alive.
