Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.
why none of them got into The Good Place
What I love about this is its acknowledgment that Jason had no intentions at all
this is all 100% true but it always made me really mad that Chidi’s “crime” was having a severe anxiety disorder like he needed understanding and therapy, sending him to the Bad Place for something he had literally no control over was incredibly fucked up
I feel like a less-surface theme of the show is that they’re all in a situation where they have been forced into bad patterns by forces outside their control - Chidi has SEVERE anxiety; Eleanor was forced by abuse and neglect to adopt a self-centered attitude from early childhood and, like many people with traumatic pasts, responds by not dealing with difficult emotions; Jason was very overtly raised in an environment where he got no education and all his models for behaviour were criminal and/or self-destructive; and Tahani has been raised in an environment where everything is performative and she is shot down for any genuine expression of unhappiness or non-material want. Just as Michael and Janet are made one way but changed by their experiences, the moral of the story is that things outside your control shape you but you can move away from them. That could easily be really insulting, in a sort of ‘just get over it’ way, but the idea isn’t that they change solely because they decide to be better - all six of them change because their circumstances change and give them the OPPORTUNITY to be better, because they’re finally given the support system they lack.
I like The Good Place because the whole show has since day 1 been predicated on the idea that black and white moral judgements made in a vacuum are bullshit, and that moral choices are informed by things outside our control, whether that be education, behaviour modelling, unfair treatment or mental health issues. That doesn’t mean we aren’t responsible for our actions but it DOES mean we have to understand morality in the context of people’s varied experiences AND asks for the possibility that if their environment is improved, their ability to function as moral agents also improves.
“sending him to the Bad Place for something he had literally no control over was incredibly fucked up” yea it was fucked up that was the entire point they made in the show. thats why they spent multiple seasons fighting to change the system of the Good Place vs. the Bad Place.

THAT'S ALLOWED?
i just learned about a scam in the 1960s where the crux of the scam was filling barrels with water and topping it off with a layer of vegetable oil. so when inspectors opened the barrels they thought it was 100% oil, which the scammer would use as collateral for loans. genius shit
lmfao wait wait hold on
As De Angelis stock of warehouse receipts increased, he began to replace the soybean oil in his tanks with water. Some tanks had special compartments, while others were hooked-up to a maze of pipes to shuttle oil from one tank to the next to fool inspectors.
he made a fucking. rube goldberg ass looney tunes machine. acme product ass scam
me in planning stages of writing: this fucks. this is gonna be so fun.
me the minute i sit down to write: language is an unwieldy cudgel we use to beat the human experience to death in an attempt at ever communicating fully with another being. i wish intelligent life had never evolved. i want to go back to the cell stage like in spore

Yeah, this is just cybersecurity in a nutshell.
Bro why did you censor the snake's cloaca on the snake anatomy post??? It's a snake?
I didn't censor anything, what -
oh. Oh, no. That's meant to be a line to show where the tail begins. Oh no, now I look like some weird prude.
Yeah, that's meant to help people grasp the anatomy and visualize how small the tail is in relation to the torso. Not meant to be some kind of weird snake privacy screen
We CANNOT have snudity (snake nudity) on this webbed site
Gotta respect their snivacy (snake privacy)

i really am just the biggest sucker for the power of friendship. if a character talks about how they keep fighting for their friends or about how they want to protect their friends i am on the floor in a puddle of my own tears
character: calls someone their friend
me, sobbing: oh my god i have friends too. i love my friends oh my god

my friends oh my god

Feel uncomfortable going to Cheesecake Factory when it’s so under the watch of the eye of Sauron
I made this post in 2016 and it got 3 notes, suddenly people are interacting with it. What is happening how did you even find it
How doe this post have less than 1,000 notes when “The Eye Of Sauron at the Cheesecake factory” has been living rent-free in my head for almost a decade?
Is this a common phenomena? I thought this was a Big Post; I remember seeing it a few times
Color has been disappearing from the world.
A new research group used machine learning to track color changes in common materials and items, below is their findings for all color changes over time, they used 7000+ items from the 1800s to now to determine color changes in the most common items.
Below are the colors of cars by year, notice how the majority of cars are grey, white, or black compared to twenty years ago.
These aren't data points, but they are comparisons between the 'modern' homes of the 70s and 80s compared to the modern homes of today.
Carpets have equally had the same treatment of grey added to them! The most common color of carpet is now grey or beige.
Even locations that used to scream with color for decades have now modernized to becoming boring minimalist (and I love minimalism) personality-less locations.
The world is becoming colorless, why?
source paper
you can look at any folk culture around the world, past or present, and find the use of the entire color spectrum. humans are drawn to color, it holds emotional symbolism but it also reflects the land we live off of. I consider it like a celebration of life and our place in it
the problem is that we aren’t actually allowed to belong to the places we live. houses and entire towns are shells meant to be as plain as possible for the next renter, buyer, or investor. the more generic it is, the more consumers it can be sold to. And when you have a country that’s biggest population doesn’t have a distinct sense of cultural identity it will be reflected and mass produced without much complaint
people getting joy from the minimalist gray aesthetic is not the same as the estrangement this country is making between people and place, one of the most fundamental relationships humans need to survive (and be happy while doing it)
Films depict middle ages as devoid of color but it's the other way around.
i learned a while ago that the whole "most of the stars we see in the sky are actually already dead because they're so far away that we're seeing them as they were thousands of years ago" thing is a myth because stars live so long that it's unlikely many, if any, of them have burned out yet, but i'm still glad that myth exists because there's just something about the thought of the sky as a graveyard of stars that gets to me
It’s interesting because one day that will be true for some people on some planet out there, but we are so young, the universe is so young, that we live in a time when we get to see more stars born than we ever will see die. There’s poetry in looking up and seeing a star graveyard, but I think there’s also poetry in looking up and seeing a star nursery.
Like, memento mori but also memento vivi

I've been on a White People Expedition Diary kick recently. I see why Lovecraft was fucking obsessed with this as a framing device, they are insanely compelling.

July 18: "We kicked that faggy Austrian botanist into a ravine. Lmao. Had a lovely bath."
July 19th 1884: "The Dutchman has been confined to the sled. We have sacrificed our belts to restrain his movements, lest we lose another Austrian to his Poop Madness."
July 20th 1884: "The men are demanding I leave behind my bathtub. I will not."
