This Juneteenth, I want this to be a reminder for y'all to stop saying "POC" when you mean black. It's fine to discuss things about general people of color's oppression and struggle but sometimes it's ok to talk about just black people. It's tempting to try and generalize so that people will actually care about us, because when you specifically talk about just the black, unique struggle it is very easy to be silenced and erased, but please, for the love of all that's holy, if you mean black, say black.

(side note; it's also okay to specify regions as well. Don't say African diaspora when you mean American black people. Because Juneteenth isn't about Africa, it's about the previously enslaved black people of the US. It's okay to talk about our struggle, our specific struggle. We shouldn't need to be palatable or relatable to be listened to.)

That is, in no way, an excuse to be explicitly racist against Asian people. The rhetoric you're using is pretty much the same rhetoric that people used to wrongfully imprison hundreds of Black people for crimes they didn't commit.

@solnight99 A boycott against Asian businesses serving Black communities is no more racist that the Montgomery Bus Boycott that was lead by Rosa Parks, for far less... -the segregationist law that Black people had to vacate seats and sit at the back for white patrons. A 14 year old was shot in the back over a water bottle and killed. Black communities are simply choosing to no longer patronize the businesses. That's it. Choosing not to spend your money in a space where you are followed, harassed and have seen people getting away with shooting and killing your children, and more... ...is an act of self-love. If you feel that is racist, I think you should do some internal soul-searching on why you think people are required to spend money in any business....particularly under those conditions.

The specific trait is that they are Asian.

This is because one Asian shop owner murdered a Black teen.

Therefore, every Asian shop is, in your words, "a space where you are followed, harassed and have seen people getting away with shooting and killing your children, and more…".

It is, in no way, racist to boycott businesses because of the race of their owners."

Am I incorrect in my assumptions?

@solnight99 I'll say it again. No one is required to spend money at any business. It is an act of self-love to refrain from spending money where you are followed, harassed, and the owner can get away with taking a child's life, especially in places that purport to serve Black communities. Black-owned businesses are seeing increased revenue now, because of this, which is wonderful. It's simply logical to not patronize businesses where your child could be killed (and the owner get away with it), or you are followed, or harassed. Regardless of whether you want to force Black people to continue to spend their money there or not, thankfully, freewill is a thing. The boycott is happening and I'm happy to see Black businesses gaining because of it. You deal with your own feelings about that on your time.

I'm not saying anyone has to spend money in Asian businesses. I'm saying it's racist to only boycott Asian businesses. Why not boycott non-Black-owned businesses? That would have a much better outcome, no?

Also, you didn't answer my question. Was I correct in my earlier reblog about what you were trying to say?

Furthermore, I don't think this situation is comparable to the Montgomery Bus Boycott. That boycott was protesting an unjust law. What law is this boycott protesting? A law saying that Asian people can murder Black people? Boycotting isn't just coincidentally not going to certain businesses, it's an organized protest that is meant to harm the sales of the boycotted business, with intent to bring positive change.

Happy Black History Month!! While I carry a deep love for my people every single day, this month feels like a special time to pour extra into the ones who have my whole heart: Black women. I am the person I am today because of the women who raised me, inspired me, loved me, and even the ones who couldn't stand me. From the women who poured into my soul to those who taught me hard lessons, I owe my essence to you.

There is an infinite beauty in our complexity, and I love every single version of us.

I love the "ghetto" Black women—the ones who are loud, proud, and take up space with their joy and their hustle. I love the sassy, confident ones who never back down and the ones who own their sexuality and queerness without apology.

I love the "weird" Black women—the alt girls, the nerds, and the ones carving out their own subcultures. I love the ones who dress differently, think differently, and refuse to fit into a box.

I love the women navigating mental illness, those who are struggling, and those who use drugs or alcohol as they please—those living raw, unfiltered lives without asking for permission.

I love the rhythm of our AAVE and the way we speak our truth, whether we’re being nurturing and kind or sharp and blunt. I love the shy ones and the activists; the women rooted in faith and the ones still wandering, searching for who they are meant to be.

I love us because we are not a monolith; we are a universe. Whether she is polished or unrefined, healing or hurting, found or still searching—I love her. I love Black women in every form, every mood, and every reality, simply because we exist.
