No longer a hopeless romantic
I think back to my 21-year-old self. How things change within 9 years. Now 30 years old, married, and no longer naive on how the world or how love works.
Love in real world doesn't leave you with tingles, a burning passion, or this big feeling of being so deeply loved.
Love in the real world is the security of knowing someone loves you through thick and thin. It's having someone by your side to experience the daily struggles and wins. Love is constantly compromising because you are two separate people who two separate preferences on how you want to live life.
Sometimes I feel resentful for how k-dramas and rom coms and disney movies set me up for some big, flashy, romantic love story.
I recognize that this is the real world. I should get over it. At least I'm married to someone who I willingly chose and love.
It's still hard to accept that a hug and a kiss on the forehead isn't enough to fix everything.
i am apple juice = ^ . ^ =
Young Hui
I’m thankful Our Blues involved the beautiful and precious Young Hui in the storyline. Society likes to hide people who are different. Jeong Jun is a perfect example of not sure how to interact with someone who has Down’s syndrome.
Young Ok obviously loves her twin sister. The compassion fatigue of caring for her sister is real though. Wanting to live a life separate from her sister is valid. Her sister requires attention and care and it’s frustrating that her parents died because they should be the one caring for her sister, not her. But Young Ok continues to work and provide for her sister while still living her life.
I hope this time together will help Young Ok understand that Young Hui is a different person than 2 years ago. She’s stable, has a job, expresses herself, and can get around on her own. Young Hui just misses her precious sister.
This kdrama is bringing light to people with different disabilities and I’m here for it.
My Liberation Notes got me wanting to hold tight to my parents.
My parents who worked tirelessly in minimum wage jobs for the sake of their 5 children.
My parents who moved to a new country for the sake of the future of their children, not knowing one lick of English.
My parents who gave up on dreams or personal goals or friends so they could work and make ends meet.
My parents who never took a spent money on self-care, massages, nights out, or anything that was self-indulgent.
My parents who always brought treats and snacks home for us from work.
My parents who loved me unconditionally, quietly, and diligently.
They are the real heroes in my life.
yo fuck the coworker that was nice to Mi-Jeong’s face and then thought it was okay to use her name to cover up the affair with their supervisor.
I’m so glad Mi-Jeong fucking slapped the shit out of her with her purse.
I hope Mi-Jeong YEETed on out that crappy work place and started her own graphic design company.
I also hope Gu walks straight into that company on her behalf and straight up shames the supervisor and that evil coworker. UGH!
2521: the story happens when we’re not looking
when we set out to write, we have only a vague vibe, one character trait, one striking scene. we think and think about them until character and story emerge, until we feel that when we’re not looking, the story goes on. and the story is the character, in the same way that we are the protagonists of our daily lives. the most important quality the character has is agency, their ability to drive the story forward with their decisions instead of reactions.
we start by pulling the character by the hand: would you like to do this, would you like to do that? what do you think of this, what do you think of that? what would you do if i put you in this situation? what would you do if i left you completely on your own? we start taking field notes, patterns of tastes and behaviors. we map the neural pathways that bring the character to life.
and at one point, the magic happens. the character starts doing things on their own. they start pulling us by the hand. “look, i want to do that! can we please do that?” they grow big enough to pull our entire weight forward. we start running after them, scrambling to keep them in sight. we’re no longer in control of their story.
and the story we thought we were telling changes. what we set out to do in the first place is not possible anymore, because the character no longer wants to do it. we plead with them, we fight with them, we threaten them with eradication. but still they refuse to follow suit. the only way they allow us to write them is if we let them lead.
as writers, our job is not to invent; it’s to listen. our job is to create an equation, and then remove ourselves from the equation and record what the equation does when we’re not there. our job is to be like stitch from that lilo & stitch scene, where he puts his nail on the vinyl and opens his mouth for the music. the characters are the vinyl, the story is the music. we’re not the agents; we’re the conduit, the distance the electrical current of thought needs to pass through to reach the page.
what we witnessed yesterday was a failure to listen. it was violence against characters and against art. but it’s not the truth, because the story happens when we’re not looking.
when we’re not looking, yi jin tells hee do that he read her diary. when we’re not looking, hee do tells yi jin that she wants to fight for this love. when we’re not looking, they hold onto to each other with both hands.
yi jin realizes that hee do is more important to him than the responsibility of a position in new york. jae kyung confronts yi jin about how hee do is feeling, and helps him transfer to the arts department, the area he has the most knowledge in and where he can heal from trauma. hee do understands that she spoke in the heat of the moment, and they talk it over again with open minds. they see each other, they reach each other, they understand each other.
because character actions build momentum. we can only start the movement, but we cannot affect where it leads. we cannot stop the story once we’ve set the characters in motion. it’s never been about the kind of story we want to tell; it’s always been about the kind of story they want to live.
because here is what happens when we’re not looking: hee do and yi jin lift their heads from the hug, and see each other. they see their own hearts and the heart of the other. and it hits them, that the emotion in their hearts and the eyes of the other is the same: a love they can’t bear not to fight for.

This is the real ending I wanted. They took the time to see each other, to listen to one another, to communicate their needs, and to discuss their relationship goals and priorities.
They are the couple that radiates love, compassion, friendship, respect, support. They don’t give up on each other. They remind themselves of how much they love each other when things get hard first and foremost, then talk about what they will do to address an issue.
Na Hee Do and Baek Yi Jin forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Isn’t that kind of embarrassing?
i love you both so much. i'm going to pretend you reunited in 2021 (lol) ♡
I love you… in every way.
Me too.
twenty five, twenty one
WHAT THE ACTUAL EFF IS THAT ENDING?
Yes, I understand that YiJin was depressed and traumatized and carried a lot of burden and responsibility from his family and for himself. Yes, I understand Hee Do didn’t want to be in a relationship filled with disappointments and sorries.
It just doesn’t make sense that these two would not make time to actually talk to each other during that whole period of being gone. Yeah they had hectic schedules, but YiJin needed to be firm with scheduling time away with Hee Do after that cancelled 600 day trip, and Hee Do needed to push to visit him in NYC even if she didn’t stay with him there and got a hotel and made a trip out of it.
They needed to sit that butts down and carve the time to actually talk to each other. Even their break up, they just straight up drifted without a word. They legit wanted to hold each other and comfort each other and spend time with another, but time did not permit (even though they wasted time not talking to each other)
You’re telling me the strong love that they had for each other that was built on a foundation of friendship and support couldn’t make it through this? We spent so much time seeing them developing a connection that goes beyond friendship and romance. Someone said that Yijin was a protector for Hee Do, but how would he have protected her while being away in NY? Not saying that he needed to forgo his career, but Hee Do was financially stable enough to allow YiJin the time and space to explore another career opportunity. 2009 was around the time of youtube and he had a lot more experience with producing, being in front of a camera, and he wanted to show hope in this world. Youtube would have been risky, and I know YiJin really wanted the financial stability after his dad’s bankruptcy :(
I will accept their break up, but grown Hee Do did not seem happy in her marriage. like wtf did her husband do? he’s obviously not around and she did not seem happy one bit in her marriage. She seemed so cold and jaded just like YiJin did. As someone who was so passionate and convicted to her beliefs and radiated positive energy, it’s hard to imagine Hee Do to grow up to be that person.
The ending I will accept and remember is they broke up but after pursuing all of their dreams and more, they reconnect as friends in older age and cherish the time they have with each other. Hee Do divorces her husband., YiJin never got married. Yi Jin got the therapy that he needed to resolve all of the trauma he’s been through. They meet somewhere in the neighborhood, maybe at the convenience store or the bus stop or at a news scene. The conversation never stops and they live happily ever after.
Hee Do, Yi Jin, don’t stop fighting for your happiness. ESPECIALLY YOU YIJIN.
twenty-five, twenty-one - baek yijin looking at na heedo™
i never thought i would be thankful for the total miscasting of the older ‘heedo’ but you know what- i’m actually grateful that they cast a different actor because it’s so much easier to just be like- that woman ain’t my heedo.
my heedo is happily married to one baek yijin and they have kids and she has gold medals and he is a successful reporter and they still eat slushies together in the summertime and hoppangs in the winter. heedo likes both red bean and veggie and yijin dislikes the veggie one but he still takes her half and gives her his half because he loves her.
they go to the beach too- and each time they do- while they watch their kids play in the water- yijin comes close to her ear and whispers gently, i love you. i am loving you.
yah old hee do sucks but she is NOT the hee do we all know and love!!!!!!!!!!!!!
