Mira’s life at home wasn’t always the best. Her family has deep roots in the religion, where they worship a god that has never been seen. She takes up her time dancing with a couple kids from the same church, since it’s the only thing that will pass time. Her parents don’t understand why she can’t fully delve into their religion while her brother, the perfect child, does whatever their parents say or ask of him. It’s vexing when her parents can’t accept her for who she is — someone who loves to dance, skateboard, and even sing. At some point, she decided if they don’t care about her wants and needs, then she’ll make them happen herself.

  guilt  settled  heavily  in  rumi's  stomach  as  she  stared  at  mira's  door ,  debating  if  she  even  had  the  right  to  knock  and  talk  with  the  other.  the  fact  that  she  knocked  at  all  and  didn't  run  was  speaking  volumes  on  how  badly  she  wanted  to  fix  this.  her  hand  flexed  a  few  times ,  a  nervous  tick  that  had  managed  to  prevail  since  her  childhood  as  she  waited  for  the  other.  it  took  more  willpower  than  she  would  have  liked  not  to  flinch  back  the  moment  the  door  opened  and  she  was  face  to  face  with  her  sister  group  mate.

❝ I . . .  can  we  talk ?  i  feel  like  i  owe  you  an  explanation ,  or  at  least  an  apology . . . ❞

Teeth  grit  in  unease,  a  muscle  twitches  in  my  jaw.  With  the  door  wide  open,  so  is  my  heart,  and  I’m  not  the  best  to  equip  this  kind  of  confrontation.  “I  guess..”  I  offer  with  a  heavy  conscience  that  things  will  get  better..I  just  don’t  know  when.  That’s  the  scary  component  of  this  all,  being  at  opposite  ends  with  Rumi.  I  hate  every  second  of  it  —  from  pulling  the  spear  on  her  that  night  to  shutting  her  down  when  she  was  at  her  worst.

I  look,  even  now,  and  they  tattoo  her  skin,  up  her  neck  and  flaring  down  into  the  folds  of  her  clothes.  The  patterns  we’ve  been  trained  to  target  and  eliminate.  Brows  knit  together.  I’m  not  going  to  eliminate  Rumi,  there’s  not  a  soil  I’d  trade  for  hers.  Yet,  the  markings  go  against  everything  I  know.  My  arms  cross  over  my  chest  awkwardly…it’s  been  a  while  since  I’ve  felt  this  way,  palms  cupping  elbows.  “What  could  you  possibly  say?”  I  admit  honestly.  Where  could  we  go  from  here?
