Personally, I've found it helps to conceptualize it like an exchange.

I want to talk about things that other people aren't interested in. The cost of them politely indulging me ... is that I have to politely indulge them—I have to let them talk about things that I'm not interested in. We take turns being bored for each other's benefit. Or, in other words, I pay for my time by listening during their turn; they pay for their time by listening during my turn.

It's worth adding that explicitly addressing this (open communication) has helped a lot of my relationships.
