Kinda love that Yelena was all "that's small potatoes and not important enough for the new avengers" until she found out a redheaded girl was trying to find her blonde-haired sister who was being held and abused by a government agency and now she's helping recover information of them. Like yes, that's a thing she's sensitive about, i understand perfectly.
I already know I will be falling in love with Boots, and she had only, like, 4 minutes of screentime.
Spoiler review for Ted Lasso 4x02:
I choose to think about this as the real first episode of the season, because this is what I wantes to see. It's not perfect (I'll explain why), but, if the season goes on like this, we might get the best case scenario for a Ted Lasso season 4.
I can't understate how happy I am that they are working with the theme of internalised misogyny, especially hidden behind the "I'm a woman with power, how can I not be a feminist?"
I love they chose to underline Rebecca's very own mysoginistic bias in not even considering a woman as head coach and actively antagonising Chilton for not being "nice" enough. Many women struggle with internal misoginy, which can manifest as holding up double standards for women and holding up men on an pedestal, even tough one invisible to our own eyes. It's not only men who have to deconstruct partriarchy in their mind and I hope this episode in the end of Rebecca's "feminist arc", 'cause she has a lot to learn yet, I would be disappointed if that was the case.
I can accept that Ted was the one to point out "maybe we need a woman on the coach staff" because, even though he is a man, in the show he mostly fulfills the role of moral compass, he at times trascends humanity and its bias and vices to become this kookie manic pixie dream coach who always points out the right and kind thing to do. Is it the most progressive thing ever to have a white cis heterosexual man fulfill this role? No, not at all, but "Ted Lasso is a ray of sunshine" is the show's premise, so take it or leave it.
And I think they're doing their best to highlight that he has some limits no, he's not sweeping in with Mary Sue abilities to save the women team from itself: he can't just barge into the locker room anymore, he doesn't know the players ad well as coach Chilton, I feel like he's tiptoeing a little around the team right now instead of instantly stepping up as a mentor, which is good thing. Maybe it's time for the teacher to learn a few things himself. In general, Ted looks a little stiff this season, he clearly has some weight on his shoulders, which I'm sure is a creative decision that will lead to an interesting place.
Speaking now of Chilton, I just love her. I feel like we don't get many female characters like her, she's serious and precise and hard-working and the show doesn't force her in the "sassy glamorous #badassbitch with an attitude" box, she's just professional and doesn't smile a lot, which is an okay thing for women to be (even though women lile Rebecca might unconsciously disagree with).
And I love that Roy likes Chilton, it makes perfect sense because they have a similar "I take no bullshit" attitude and it highlights the double standards held a against her (when Roy, a man, is cold towards others, he is a lovable grump, when Alice is cold, she's a bitch).
Love how they underlined how underfunded the women teams are (if you're following what's happening in f1 right now with women drivers, this really hurts) and I loved the first look at girls! They look fun, they look unpolished, I look forward to meeting them properly. I knew I was gonna love Boots from the urinal joke, and the condom one just confirmed it.
In general, a lot of well aimed shots at sexism and performative feminism (support women but not enough to fund initiatives for them or get an interest in their fields), which I feared would be nowhere to be found after last episode's "girls helping girls" bit at the clothing shop, which felt pretty superficial and just an excuse to insert a "feminist" line, "because this show is about women now!".
Whatever the fuck's going on with Beard, I love it. The clearly break up, exes-who-are trying-to-stay-friends energy with Ted was so funny, I am almost sad they didn't keep this charade up for the whole season, especially because, while Beard is one of my favourite characters of the show, I want as much runtime as possible with the new players.
Of course I love the og "management team" (Ted, Beard, Rebecca, Keeley, Higgins), but Ted Lasso wouldn't be as successful without the footballers' storylines, so I hope they don't focus too much on the already established characters, but they give us lots of interesting new female characters.
Roy's also crazier, and good for him! And once again part of a love triangle, this time a metaphorical one with Ted and Beard. His place should always be in a fucked up polycule, if you want my opinion. He and Keeley are okay for now, nothing exceptional, nothing annoying.
Let's re-address the elephant in the room: the show plays it fairly safe and clean-cut, almost PSA-like with its themes, I think we're gonna get a lot of "and now we explain feminism to you" moments, which can get a little grating. And, at the end of the day, progress will mostly happen through the actions and words of a (white cis straight) man, who swept in at the eleventh hour taking the spotlight, while it's the women who laid the foundation for the team. Sorry for being the mutual that's too woke (and probably not woke enough still), but it feels a little ironic that in a story that criticises how little people care about women sports, the man will be be our main pov character and hero.
I'm pretty sure the show will have a finale in which the girls get to take the spotlight (and there's a non-zero chance the spotlight will be "graciously granted" by a male character), but we will have to get there instead starting with it. The women will have to gradually "earn" the center of the narration and that doesn't sit too right with me; but again, the show is called "Ted Lasso", you can't just can the mian character and more people will watch "Ted Lasso Season 4" than the first season of new show about women footballers.
So, all in all, probably not as coherent with its politics and message as it would like to be, but, if Ted Lasso 4 continues down this path, we might have a good thing, a little feminism 101, which doesn't hurt these days yes this is a shade to tiktok feminism
P. S. Can't wait to see Ted Lasso and Alice Chilton become friends, I think it's gonna be a fun ride. Would love to see some Roy-Chilton friendship as well!

I don't think Rebecca was necessarily wrong to pick Ted over Alice for the head coaching job - the problem is her reasons for not considering Alice in the first place.
Ted is a consummate salesman with a proven PR record in Richmond, and that's what the Lady Greyhounds need to help them get off the ground - someone to get the public believing in them. And no, Alice can't do that, but that's not why Rebecca passed on her.
What's Rebecca's first reaction when Higgins brings up Alice's candidacy? "She doesn't like me." Mmhmm. Why is that the deciding factor?
Rebecca seems to be slipping into running Richmond as her social club. This renders Alice unhireable by virtue of not being Rebecca's friend or wanting it. Compare and contrast with Keeley, whose competence got her noticed and hired because first she was nice to Rebecca in the women's loo. It's not that ability doesn't matter to Rebecca; it's that she doesn't seem to consider it until the potential employee passes her personal likeability threshold. Which is a pretty foolish way to do your hiring.
Secondly, all the talk of growling has to be deliberate, because I didn't hear a sound like that out of Alice's throat, but it is the default mode of our man Roy. And yet here he is coaching the men's team without a single mention of how his verbal affectations affect his job qualifications.
And yes, that's probably in part because he was always good to Rebecca, and because he's her friend. But let's be real: it's also because he's a man. And a man can wear the same monochrome clothes and unsmiling face every day and be just fine if he does the rest of his job well. But Alice can't.
That said, I'm now hoping we get to see our two Richmond grumps bond over their shit knees. And that Roy gets surgery if he needs it, because the amount of aspirin he was taking was not good.

nothing on this god's green earth can convince me that peter parker doesn't have an ao3 account where he is elbows deep in a 'rise of skywalker' fix-it fic. like, fully invested in it, been writing it pre-spider bite with ned, who is just as enthusiastic about it. but the thing is, it's really hard to do updates when you are literally spider-man.
every three months he'll post and in the author's note there's some shit like "sorry this took a while, i got shot seven times :/" or "i know it's been a minute, i literally got hit by a bus and then stabbed in the leg, but i'm all good!" or sometimes ned would log in and post with a note "hey i'm a friend posting on the author's behalf, they're healing from severe hypothermia but promised an update, so here it is!"
and the fic just gets increasingly more popular for the author notes alone. a good handful of the comments are something along the lines of "i'm not even in the star wars fandom, i'm just here to see if the author is good" or "every update i cheer for another day the author gets to live at this point"
and any reader who is a native new yorker kind of pieces together that holy shit the author might be spider-man because the timeline adds up, and they just fully embrace it. spider-man will stop a robbery and the guy behind the counter will ask when the next chapter will be up. spider-man returns a stolen backpack to a girl and she'll tell him that he "really got poe's voice down so well, it's really impressive."
ned thinks it is hilarious. mj finds out about the fic from twitter, to peter's absolute horror, and changes peter's contact name to "friendly neighborhood ao3 author". but the worst thing to happen is after an avengers battle where peter took a pretty big hit and ends up in med-bay. and during a press conference, when someone asks how spider-man is healing, tony just drops "spidey won't be down for too long. the star wars fic will be updated within the week, probably."
