My father is a classic layabout lazy bastard. He's the guy that people try to stereotype people on benefits as when they call them "dole bludgers". Sits in a filthy house all day whining that his wife won't clean it up, gets a great idea for a new business every few months and gives up after two weeks when it becomes clear that starting a business is hard, does everything he can to avoid doing a single scrap of work in life, uselessly drags his feet when the government forces him to actually do some.
Or at least, he was, until about three years ago, when he was sent off to do mandatory Work for the Dole at a volunteer organisation. He'd done a lot of Work for the Dole in the past, of course, and like most people who are forced to do a shitty job under the threat of starvation, was neither enthusiastic nor particularly useful. But in this particular place, he was given a job that he could do better than anyone else (he was one of 2 men working with a legion of elderly women, and the only person able to easily haul around the heavy goods that the organisation works with). He quickly found himself with a job he could understand, he could see the clear utility in, and that his coworkers greatly valued him for. He started arriving on time every day, putting in the effort, getting shit done. He started caring about the results. And when his Work for the Dole time was up, he kept volunteering.
He's one of two people paid to work in that warehouse now (the other person being the manager), and he's a lynchpin of activity there, their sole regular and reliable source of physical labour. When he takes holidays, they have to plan around it, because his consistent hard work has become such a critical asset to their work. And he's not taking nearly as many holidays as he should -- he works extra unpaid hours, lifts loads that are somewhat heavier than he should be lifting, shoulders the work of others when they need breaks, and we all have to urge him to take more days off for his health since he's not a young man any more. For my entire life this man has been a pile of old mud in the shape of a human, and the instant he found a job that fulfils his needs, he won't fucking stop. He's gonna die in that warehouse and die happy.
This is the one of the things that universal basic income would help with. Disabled and elderly people could live comfortably, parents could take as much time off work to spend with their kids as they'd like, homeless people would be able to afford housing, and people could afford to find a job they enjoy, rather than being stuck in one that merely pays the bills.
why does no one ever talk about the fact that ron desantis was highkey crushing on godot. like even his wife was like "yea he loves dudes in masks" and nobody in the fandom ever talks about it
it disturbs me that a significant number of people think that the issue with sexual violence, gendered violence, and misogyny is sexual desire rather than dehumanization, so they are relentlessly suspicious of others' (and their own) desires while simultaneously never at all interrogating others' (and their own) dehumanizing beliefs about other people, both within and outside of sexual contexts
#and at the root you'll find the misunderstanding of sexual violence as a violent extension of sex. #when in reality sexual violence is a sexual extension of violence. and the distinction is important.
there's an extremely niche plot in romance fiction wherein our invariably heterosexual leads fall in love after a night of passion leads to an unplanned pregnancy and they're now bound together by an impending child. I cast no judgment on anyone who enjoys this, but since I'm an evil gay and this is my personal nightmare scenario I want to see a zany romance novel premised on the opposite resolution: a couple falls in love while on a whirlwind roadtrip to obtain a legal abortion
"oh but along the way they realize they actually do want to raise the child together and ultimately keep the baby" no actually they successfully get the abortion and then they get chili dogs or something
neither of them want kids and it's not because they're immature or selfish or afraid of commitment or irresponsible or whatever, they just don't want to be parents and that's not a flaw they overcome. obviously they have other issues because there has to be some kind of arc to this story but deciding to keep a pregnancy that was unplanned and unwanted isn't the solution.
some of you are very determined for this to not be a romance, to which I politely say shut the fuck up and get out of my sandbox. these idiots are going on an abortion roadtrip and they are falling in love on the way so help me god.
I genuinely am floored by how hard of a time people are having with the very simple premise "two characters go on a roadtrip to get an abortion and fall in love with each other"
each other. each other each other each other. a person who is pregnant and the person who got them pregnant fall in love with each other on the way to terminate the pregnancy.

light was such a loser cuz he didnt just google the 100 richest people and start writing down names
how would you feel if you woke up tomorrow and find out exactly 100 of the world’s richest people died of heart attacks at exactly noon universal time. can you imagine the theories. light is absolutely a loser for not doing this
[ID: Reply from elumind that says: “Do the richest one every week and see next in line lose their shit and try to get rid of the money. I think of this almost daily.” /end ID.]
The notes on this are wild because people are legit passionately arguing about why this wouldn’t work. No one said it would work. They said he’s a loser for not doing it.
There has to be a *pattern* to it, though, to really get their attention. Like it has to be the same time of day, the same day, each week.
The first one stands up and draws a massive A on the nearest wall before dropping dead.
Exactly one week later, Thursday at 3:13 PM, the next one looks up, blank-faced, and uses a car key to scratch the word ‘CAMEL’ into the side of their car. There are memes.
The week after that, in the middle of an interview, the third victim turns to the camera and says ‘THROUGH.’ He drops dead.
The man who writes “EYE” is in a private underground bunker. Enough radiation shielding to survive a direct nuclear strike. There are fifteen guards posted at the door- surveillance confirms not one of them left their post.
By the time “NEEDLE” is scratched into the upholstery of a private yacht, people are starting to give money away.
Like most of us I’ve thought extensively on this since I first saw Death Note and came to the conclusion that the most likely reaction would be people creating more byzantine ways of keeping hold of their resources while not technically counting them as personal resources and not technically being so rich. With enough shell companies, fake charities, and resources stashed in secret or illegal places or the bank accounts of relatives, people could keep most of what they have while dropping right off any list of wealthiest people. The wealthy are often experts at this for tax fraud reasons. Light’s response, of course, would be to start taking these things into account, seeking out hackers and accountants and various other experts to keep track of the actual wealthiest, and the wealthy (many of whom would be willing to risk their lives to stay that way) would use the dying as a metric for what the mysterious killer was using to score wealth and try to find ever more secret methods of resource hoarding. An accountancy arms race would be underway.
I’m not saying it’s a bad idea. I’m saying it would make a fantastic Death Note rewrite. Instead of Light making stupid mistakes against L, he could actually put his genius to work in Death Note: The Accountancy Wars.
write down cause of death as ‘shit self on live television’ to make extra sure
frankly i think [HYPOTHETICAL GUY WHO ISN’T ME] should just write down six hundred and sixty six of the richest people in the world from whatever lists they could find and then have them all hit by lightning at exactly the same moment.
whatever happens after that would be a bonus round.
Yeah this is the Death Note remake I’ve always wanted, in part because I think it’s what most socially aware teenagers would actually do.
It would also be interesting on L’s end. Working with the cops on behalf of the wealthy to protect them, even as the obvious solution to the threat they’re under (just stop being obscenely wealthy and settle for being extremely comfortable) means that what is actually being protected isn’t necessarily their lives, but their security in their social position.
Also, whereas the original Death Note had very little transition between Light killing “criminals” and then just killing anyone he found threatening or anyone who suited his scheme, I think a Light who was trying to Robin Hood his way to a better society would have a lot more hesitation about collateral damage. Which would make it a lot more dramatic if L did something like a switcheroo where he posed a criminal on death row as a wealthy tycoon in order to figure out how Light was picking targets. In canon, that moment only bothered Light because it was a trick, but if Light’s politics are different, suddenly that becomes L crossing a moral line.
While still introducing room for more dilemmas about Light getting targets wrong based on things like bad information, or wealthy people who have caught on doing things like using desperate or unaware proxies to essentially hold the bag for them, and die in their place.
Personally I think the cat-and-mouse games would actually feel even more high stakes if Light was freaking out every time he killed someone who wasn’t a real billionaire.
The more Luo Binghe looked, the more shocked he became. Practically no place on Shen Qingqiu's body was safe to look at. He was nothing but a heap of wounds and blood, truly a spectacle too horrible to behold. Luo Binghe remembered that before he had lost consciousness, Shen Qingqiu had clearly been in perfect condition. His voice trembled. "This...was all for...me?"
Shen Qingqiu was going to spit blood. If not for Luo Binghe then who?
He couldn't say that sort of thing. He always felt awkward making a big deal about what he'd done for someone else or showing off his scars, and he only managed to wrench out four words: "Your hand - let go."
Chapter 16: Melting Ice
Supporting evidence that Shen Qingqiu really can't face how much he's worth to other people; he can't even admit that he nearly destroyed his body to protect Luo Binghe while he was unconscious.
I would like to take a moment to reminisce on Shen Qingqiu's noticable lack of thought about how anyone close to him must be handling his death. He's convinced that he's dead in the other world and being sent back would mean no more life at all, right? But he never once spares a thought about how his family must feel now that he's gone, and along that same vein, he assumed he could die and come back in a mushroom body and become a wandering cultivator without mentioning how his sect will feel with him gone.
He has this startling ability to assume he can disappear and not worry about anyone from his past afterward, like he exists in this grey area to other people where he can just slip away and it wouldn't be a big deal. The amount of times he was prepared to kill himself to protect others is nearing double digits by the time Maigu Ridge rolls around, and it paints this picture of a man who disregards his life in favor of others. Like he believes he exists in service to everyone else, and if giving up his life will protect them, he'll hand it over in a heartbeat.
Its curious. He opens the novel by saying he'll protect himself by "clinging to the protagonist's thighs," then proceeds to get attached to anyone and everyone that proves to be a real, complicated person- Luo Binghe included. And once he starts seeing the people around him as people, what does he do? Sacrifice himself, and sacrifice himself, and sacrifice himself over and over again. Not just his life, but he gives himself up to someone else's custody for his sect at least twice that I can remember (one of which was Luo Binghe, but at the time he was very distrustful of him anyway.)
I don't know how to close this, so. Just think about this Shen Qingqiu and his disregard for his own worth.
This is actually why I have troubles buying into the idea that Shen Yuan's first life was as rosy or simple as he tends to portray it.
Happy people who have reasonably good and healthy relationships with their friends and family are (usually) more aware that they will be mourned if they die.
This doesn't necessarily mean that Shen Yuan's family were bad people or anything, but it does strongly imply that there was something fucked up in play for his formative years at least. You don't tend to develop a martyr complex that intense from an idyllic and supportive home life.
fuck and i actually like this blog god damn it
