Superman has always been “woke”.
Yes, he is an immigrant (from space), he stands up for justice, and he has fought various hate groups (KKK, Nazi’s, bully’s, and even corrupt rich CEO’s).
What angers me is to hear how he is suddenly “woke”. Superman has always been “woke”, comics have always been “woke”, and the creators especially have been “woke”. Not only was Superman created by two Jewish men in a time where it was terrifying to be Jewish, but they had created the character as a symbol of hope.
Superman has canonically taken down the corrupt, hell his most infamous villain is Lex Luthor- a know xenophobe who protects corporate greed, and is even so self centered that he keeps placing himself above everything for attention.
From my perspective, Superman represents the fight that the common man has in them, the good emotions and urges that every human needs to pursue. He lives his life out of love and compassion, protecting those most vulnerable, standing up for what’s right, and advocating for others to live their lives how they want without fear.
Meanwhile, republicans are calling this “woke”???
It’s also the same with Homelander. The right not realizing that Homelander is used to make fun of them is insane. “He’s making fun of us? How, he’s got our flag as his cape.” No, he has shown various times that he holds no love or respect for others. He is emotionally unstable, emotionally stunted, and takes a spotlight that isn’t his. He has a rare affiliation, but will choose the winning side and tell that he helped or created that “win”. He is known to be angry and vengeful, kill anyone opposing him, and slander the shit out of them.
Bases of this rant is: Superhero’s and comics have always been “woke”, but to diss a piece of media for sharing that it’s alright to either be yourself or to stand up for injustice under the guise of it being “too woke” is insane.
