Tony: Don’t get us wrong, helping people is the name of the game. We do this for a good reason and we know the consequences. But when the earthquakes over, we’re the ones that have to deal with the aftershock.
ik I mainly post/reblog about SPN, but what can ya say, I also like marvel (but the old ones were the best ones personaly, though I love Yelena and The Falcon And The Winter Soldier series)
are you having a good day (♡ˊ͈ ꒳ ˋ͈)
that's a very good question
haha, it continues
Every time I see someone call Rowena Sam and Dean’s mother figure I take physical damage
OKAY ACTUALLY .
no i saw a take like this earlier and i think it's sort of crazy to say that Rowena is a better mother to the boys than Mary because Rowena has never acted like a mother to them . Rowena has never acted like a mother to her own son .
the only example i can really figure of her acting " motherly " , in heavy quotation bc this is really just common empathy , is when she agrees to try and help Jack in s14 . arguably though that is not motherly instinct , that is pity for a sick kid who chose to be kind to her , whether she helped him or not . so genuinely i don't think that adds to her motherliness , but rather her humanity .
but no i think it's a little strange to assign familial roles such as " mother " to people who don't actually display that deep bond — Rowena is nearly always in it because it gives her an angle , or provides her protection .
i'm sorry idk if that's the point you were trying to make , i just was literally thinking about this earlier (༎ຶ ෴ ༎ຶ)
To add to the lovely tags of @windfall-prophet, YES.
Like rowena isn't a mother. She is, but only in the sense that she gave birth to Crowley, she doesn't act like a motherly figure ever in the entire series.
AND I WATCHED IT 3 TIMES.
Rowena is a badass, she is a witch, she is insanely cool and all the words I just used do not sum up her entire personality, and she does not deserve to be minimized into any category! INCLUDING THE ONES I JUST USED. BECAUSE THAT'S SIMPLIFYING A CHARACTER THAT IS SO COMPLEX.
It's like saying that Dean is a cold-blooded killer. I can't really use the 'father/mother' figure with Dean because he was a dad to Ben, and he was a older brother but also a mom but also a dad to Sam.
In Dean's case; yes sometimes he killed without blinking. Especialy when he had the mark of cain.
But he never killed cold. He killed angry. He killed sad, and filled with grief, and he killed without mercy, but he wasn't cold.
What I'm trying to say, while trying to explain on a character I highly relate to, is that Rowena is not lableable. She is not motherly, the same way Dean was never unfeeling (not particularly counting when Dean was a demon right now).
We had MULTIPLE SEASONS and a BUNCH of episodes, showing us how Rowena is not maternal. She is empathetic when she wants to be, but she's not maternal. If anyone was a better mom to the boys than Marry, at least for a while, then it was Jody. And, to be honest, if we had more time, I feel like Missoury would be more motherly than rowena.
couldn't get the idea of cas having angel wings around his head out of my head
hnnnnnng yes.
I'm just imagining just how much longer it would take Dean to let himself be vulnerable with Cas if Cas had a visible marker of being *other*.
And also how hard he'd eventualy defend him, once he'd be able to be vulnerable, if someone were to be agressive or give Cas dirty looks, because that's *his* angel 'you motherfuckers'.
Just how much he'd love carding his fingers through the little feathers framing his lover's face.
are you having a good day (♡ˊ͈ ꒳ ˋ͈)
that's a very good question
This came as a sample with a new label printer.
This is exactly what my brain is saying 99% of the time.
Is this a preview of your watching notes for 13x06?
Omg, tag your spoilers! smh
COWBOY HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATS
that’s more accurate as far as my 13.06 watch notes will likely go.
ahem.
YEE-HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAW
Actual dialogue from 13x06 -
DEAN: CAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAS
YEEEEE HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaAaaaaaaaaaAaaaAAAAAAAAAAAW indeed
So…
Is Destiel canon now? Can we say that?
I mean, we’ve already textually confirmed that
a) Dean and Sam’s reactions to Cas’ death are completely different in nature
b) Dean’s reaction to Cas’ death is completely different from the deaths of everyone else he loves
c) Dean is suicidal over Cas’ death.
d) Sam understands that what Dean is going through is harder for him than it is for Sam and is in light of this being really nice
e) In the promo for the next episode Dean is actually really happy. The only different variable is that Cas is back.
Honestly I could go on for a long while, but do I even need to?
The writers just have to say with their mouths, that’s all. Otherwise it’s SO COMPLETELY CANON
Yeah, but the problem is WHAT to say?
“I love Dean.” - already happened, plus Dean knows: “people who love me, they pulled me back from that edge” etc.
“I love Cas.” - happened in a roundabout way: “everyone you love will be long gone, everyone except me” - but yeah, Dean needs to to do it textually.
Also, both of them need to make sure it’s not open to interpretation, but how to do it? Because I really don’t see them go “I love you, like, romantically,” “I love you not like a brother, if you know what I mean,” or “I wanna get to know you better, you know, in a biblical sense.” (Personally, I’d love to hear Dean say that last one.)
We are in a situation where it will be goddamn hard to do a subtle canonizing (because let’s be honest, subtle canonizing has been going on for a while now), in a way that would be both clear and not offensive (I mean, in a way that doesn’t seem like the showrunner/writers are saying ”we can’t say too much/show too much, because it’s groooosss.”)
For me, at this moment it seems like the most likely way for it to go, is just a scene where they both look for words, can’t find them, look at each other, and just end up pushing each other against walls, agressively de-flanneling/de-trenchcoating each other. Fade to black.
Hard to misinterpret it, and that way they will avoid awkwardness of: “Hey, I like you, wanna be boyfriends?”
*looks into the camera having watched the whole spn series*
O’Death.
“Tombstone” (1993): cowboys and gay subtext
Disclaimer: I wrote this text long time ago, when we first heard the title of the episode, and we knew perfectly nothing about the plot - I just somehow never got to posting it. Back then I never DREAMED that we will be getting Cas and Dean roleplaying Texas rangers, and running around in cowboy hats. (What a time to be alive!) Anyway, I hope this little rant about how “Tombstone” (1993) is relevant to tomorrow’s episode will still be fun to read.
Disclaimer 2: I do not equal effeminate/weak bodied/flamboyant = gay, just different from the surroundings in the context of this movie. At the same time, the movie uses cheap stereotypes to characterize their characters in subtext. It is 1990s, and this is not good, but it happened back then.
File it under the “Things I do because of my “Supernatural” obsession”: I watch and read stuff I hadn’t expected to before I started watching the show - you know, like a 1993 western telling the story of the legendary gunman Wyatt Earp and his two brothers, hunting and killing some Old West gang of outlaws in a frontier town.
Nevertheless, I did watch it, and now I will write about it because I am painfully aware that episode 13x06 is called “Tombstone”, that it has a western theme, and that it’s an episode by the writer who gave us “Stuck in the Middle with You” (12x12). It is therefore quite possible that the source material is relevant to the final product - plus with Tarantino being a western buff, it all connects nicely.
I will not speculate about the actual episode since we have almost nothing to go on at the moment - besides a few pictures from which we can gather a couple of facts:
The boys are most probably in Dodge City at some point (we saw pictures from the set saying “Dodge City” on one of the buildings). The city is about 3,5 hour drive from Lebanon - where the bunker is - and it was here Wyatt Earp was the sheriff before he moved to Tombstone. It also is “the cowboy capital of the US” because of it being the main city on the old “cattle trail”, famous for its cow markets and for its gunfights. We saw Dodge City on the show once before when Krissy’s dad was attacked in “Adventures in Babysitting”, but otherwise this is the first time we visit it,
We also know that at some point we will visit a cowboy-themed motel.
[While all of this gives us no story hints whatsoever, I think it’s safe to assume that the keywords for the episode are “cowboys” and “western”. Since Davy Perez’ most noteworthy episode last year was Tarantino themed, I am not remotely surprised this season for him is “westerns” (he is also bringing us the train heist episode later this season - yes, please.)]
I can, however, present the movie “Tombstone” that may or may not have something to do with the final episode (we’ll see). As I am aware that not everyone is as dedicated (read: bored and obsessed) as me to check out every pop culture reference on the show, I decided to share my newly aquired wisdom with the class.
Ok, so the story. The movie tells a (rather idealized) version of the shootout that occured in the frontier town of Tombstone, Arizona, between Wyatt, Virgil and Morgan Earp (plus their friend, Doc Holliday) and the gang of outlaws who called themselves “the Cowboys” - known as the gunfight at OK Corral. I will talk just about the movie here (since the historical truth is a little different, and a compare-and-contrast historical analysis is not what we need right now).
So, Wyatt Earp got famous being the marshall of Dodge City, while also being a pacifist and trying to avoid starting conflicts as much as possible. Tombstone was supposed to be his retirement - he wanted to settle down, finally having his family around, and earn some money for a comfortable and silent life. He came to Tombstone together with his two brothers and their wives; upon arrival, he found out that his best friend, Doc Holliday, also ended up in the town, searching for his luck and trying to cure his TB - an illness that will later kill him at the age of 35.
We meet Wyatt Earp when he has people closest to his heart right around him, and is very content with his life. He is also very adamant to leave the past and the fame behind, and start a completely new chapter in Arizona. The Earp brothers find out very quickly, however, that Tombstone is very far from the sleepy abode the name might suggest. The town is full of colourful characters - gamblers, gunslingers, preachers, prostitutes, outlaws etc. And of course there is a conflict boiling just below the surface.
Unwillingly, one by one the Earp party is pulled back into being the law officers again, and into the bloody frontier war.
SPOILERS AHEAD (you know, if you wanna watch the movie yourself)
So many themes here that remind me of SPN!
We have a duty bound man who meets a maverick and outgoing woman. She offers him excitement and adventures, and of course he falls for her, but doesn’t let himself have what he wants because of his mission, his situation (he was married at the time), and the need to act honourably. He is, however, perfectly aware of his feelings and that a part of this behaviour is fear of following his heart because he had never done this before in his life;
It takes a death of his closest friend to realize life is too short, and he should go for what he wants, which he does;
Before this, however, he follows the murder of one of his brothers by going on a shooting spree, and killing every bad guy he can find until they all are eradicated,
There is also so much gay subtext between two of the characters that the movie is always mentioned when “gay westerns before Brokeback Mountain” are discussed.
“Tombstone” as a lesson in gay subtext:
It is never mentioned in the movie that Billy Zane and Jason Priestley’s characters are gay. Yet, it is so obvious from the way they are portrayed that even people who are not used to reading subtext are perfectly aware the two characters are most probably lovers.
The characterization
The first thing we notice is the look of the characters. The two man are both dressed in a way that differenciates them from the enviroment around them - Billy Zane’s Fabian is completely different from the masculine world of the Old West, with his soft hair, boyish good looks, clean shaven face, and elaborate outfits.
Jason Priestley’s Billy is more in accordance with the tough world of Tombstone - he is the deputy sheriff after all, and can be tough when needed - but still, in his time off he is portrayed as soft, effeminate, especially while contrasted with the criminals he usually runs with. His outfit is not too different from everyone else’s, but he is the only person to wear a bowtie (everyone else wears neckties or bandanas) and spectacles. He is portrayed as a slightly weaker and more vulnerable person.
Exposition in relation to other characters
The two characters sexuality is shown, not talked about, especially through the kind of interractions they have with other people.
We meet Fabian when he steps out of a carriage, all confident, flamboyant, well-groomed and witty. His person awakens the reaction in the manly-men of the West, which is shown by Morgan Earp asking the local sheriff “What kind of town is this?” (at which point Wyatt shushes him, as if he said something offensive).
To hammer the point home, Fabian is an actor who travels with a gorgeous woman, but obviously has no sexual interest in her - they are best buddies who ogle the Earps together, and comment on their attractiveness.
As for Billy, we meet him when he arrives at the theatre to see the actors’ performance, and right away he is shown bullied by the Cowboys. The quips obviously refer to his sexuality (“Hey, sister boy, gimme some!”). He doesn’t try to shoot them down, just tries to avoid being touched. Quickly he is “saved” by the leader of the gang, and seated beside him. Shortly afterwards the camera shows us the difference between the Cowboys and the deputy sheriff’s approach to Fabian onstage (mocking vs in awe).
Later, during a blink-and-you-miss-it moment, Billy grabs Fabian in the saloon, and cordially invites him to his table. This is the last time we see the two men together, alive.
Fast forward to the end of the movie: Billy is riding around with the Cowboys while Wyatt Earp runs around, shooting everything he can find. The outlaws stop a carriage and find the actress and Fabian in the back: the actor is dead, shot by the Cowboys. Everything here happens completely beside the dialogue and the rest of the scene. Billy watches dead Fabian while the actress holds her dead friend, and angrily discusses the war with the leader of the gang.
(Just for your viewing pleasure, I created THIS GIFSET of the scene)
It is never said out loud that Bily and Fabian are lovers. It is still pretty damn obvious. It is perfectly clear from the way they are presented, their interactions with other characters, and the (very limited) onscreen interactions with each other.
“Tombstone” is a cowboy movie that takes a step towards the actual reality of the Wild West, and makes it almost textual. Homosexuality was a natural part of the cowboy lifestyle - it was after all a society full of men, where the men to women ratio was around 8:1. Everyone had needs, not everyone had money, and love and sexual encounters between men were as common as in any other, similar enviroment. There is a reason why the uber-masculine cowboy stereotype is one of the main figures in American gay iconology - think everything from “Midnight Cowboy” to The Village People and “Brokeback Mountain”.
Why Davy Perez chose to call his episode after the kettle-market town in Arizona, but also after the movie with such a strong gay subtext?
WE MAY NEVER KNOW!
My friend is watching spn, and even though they're at ss13 ep 21, I wanted to rewatch the widower arc of Dean Winchester + The tombstone ep and I was just like... 'isn't the tombstone movie gay' (even though I haven't watched it, but the name felt familiar), so yeah... the movie AND the ep is gay as hell.
Wdym Dean goes from 'I don't believe in anything' to 'We got Cas back. That's a pretty big win' with a goofy smile on his face JUST BECAUSE HE GOT CAS BACK. GAY AS HELL.
Oh noes, our favourite idiots are fighting!
A scribble about Dean being a bad patient (to no one’s surprise) in my TrueForm Universe. It’s loosely inspired by the current canon Destiel Divorce ™. I’m experimenting with trying to find a simpler, faster style and failing hard, so excuse the absolute sketchiness of this comic *cough*
Anyway… what will our poor Cas do?

Hehe. (Says me, rebloging part one just so no one gets spoiled how it ends, GO READ IT lads, it's funny)
...All this work for a hentai joke. I'm terribly sorry.
I also consulted my jury of Patrons about whether or not Dean would say "Calm your tits". I'm not convinced he would, but also not convinced he wouldn't. :D

Romeo + Juliet, 1996 | Supernatural, 13.06 “Tombstone”
Okay, apologies for hijacking your post OP but I couldn’t stop thinking about this to such an extent that I just went to rewatch the entire Baz Luhrmann Romeo and Juliet to remind myself at what point in the plot this scene was from because I needed to reassure myself that I wasn’t crazy for thinking this was probably intentional, because like, that’s batshit, right?
I am now 100% convinced this visual nod with the orange lighting and the blue cross in 13x06 was an intentional Romeo and Juliet parallel and here’s why:
The first thing to know if you, like me, didn’t remember, is that the blue neon crosses in the 1996 Romeo and Juliet are in the church at Juliet’s wake after she has faked her death. The first gif in this set is after Romeo has returned to Verona, and, fully believing that Juliet is dead for real, he has run and fought his way into the church where she lies. He is approaching her body here.
Another thing to note about the 1996 Baz Luhrmann Romeo and Juliet is there’s extremely heavyhanded angel imagery surrounding Juliet throughout like, the entire goddamn film. There’s angels everywhere in her room. She goes to the costume party where she first meets Romeo dressed as an angel, white fluffy strap on wings and all. It’s not subtle. It’s Baz Luhrmann, none of the imagery in this film is subtle. (for what it’s worth, Romeo attends that costume party dressed as a knight)
Okay so, angel, believed dead, reunion, yep that’s enough for one simple visual nod to this scene in romeo and juliet that most of the audience of supernatural won’t notice, just for the sake of queerbaiting the ones that do notice because it gives the scene a SIGNIFICANTLY more romantic connotation, yeah.
But. Y’all. Do you remember what Dean did in the last episode, 13x05? As part of his widower arc spiral, when he couldn’t save the kid the MOTW ghost got, he fucking injected himself with poison to (hopefully, probably temporarily) kill himself so he could talk to the trapped ghosts. Yeah he told sam to inject him with adrenaline after 5 minutes to bring him back but he did not have an absolute guarantee that would work. It was heavily implied if not stated outright that he wanted to die, while believing Cas to be dead, when he did that. Meanwhile we, the audience, already knew Jack had resurrected Cas.
They really brought Castiel back with a whole ass Romeo and Juliet parallel, with Dean as Romeo killing himself by poison and with the same dramatic irony, and then shot their reunion scene as a visual reference to the most iconic movie version of Romeo and Juliet.
But also of course in Romeo and Juliet, Romeo stays dead and then Juliet kills herself for real. Well, Billie brought Dean back saying he was needed for something big (killing God) — was this also foreshadowing of Cas’ confession in 15x18???
And then we never got textual confirmation that Dean reciprocates! After the fucking ROMEO AND JULIET parallel! This show is infuriating. I love it. I hate it.
TLDR: spn paralleled Romeo & Juliette by having their Romeo/Dean take poison hoping to die bc he believed his angel coded love to be dead, even as the audience knew the angel to be alive, and filming their reunion in the same orange lighting backed by an iconic neon blue cross as the movie.
Excuse me but I’m going to have to murder whoever cut Jensen tenderly cupping Cas’s face out of the shot
i hate it here
The tags "It's never too late to start all over again"...
@deanwasalwaysbi, YOU'RE KILLING ME HERE
but yeah, let's love it, because it Was dean on point, it Was intentional, and dean was, in fact, always bi
Sam found a spell in Golden Time that he used to bring back Eileen. We find out three episodes later in The Trap that the spell was planted by Chuck so that he could give Sam something to lose to make him lose hope, to completely break his spirit.
Dean and Castiel go on a wild goose chase to Purgatory the same episode, looking for a Leviathan blossom for the spell to trap Chuck. but we find out in 17-Unity that there never was any way to trap him, the spell was something Chuck made up for the story. Continuity errors be damned, the only logical conclusion is that he wanted Dean and Castiel go to purgatory.
Chuck wanted Dean and Castiel in Purgatory, where Dean feels his emotions purely and can express himself. Dean prays to Castiel (which Jensen called Dean's confession) then goes to tell Castiel something. If Dean told Cas he loved him, Castiel would have gone to the empty, completely breaking Dean's spirit in a perfect same-episode-parallel to Eileen and Sam.
But he didn't. He didn't because Castiel stopped him.
Castiel broke the narrative, Castiel broke Chuck's narrative, again. And that is why Chuck is so completely pissed at Castiel in Unity.
WAIT A MINUTE NOW
s13 ep1 SPN
(Inspired by the scene of Dean praying to god at the end of the episode)
God is not here, darling,
So who do you pray to?
Darling, god won’t answer,
So who do you pray to?
You cry out to the sky,
Your head bowed,
And then you look around,
Hoping you’ll see him around,
But god is not here, baby,
So who do you pray to?
Your knuckles are red,
From the blood on them,
And you feel like crying,
But you can’t.
So you smash the wall sign,
Queling the rage.

it's giving 'I am your new God' and darlin' I'm praying to the new religion
