summary: deceit (damien) is a mostly-normal journalism student who managed, somehow, to only make friends with superheroes and supervillains. he’s in his final year of college, got an amazing best friend who’s only a semi-murderous supervillain and he’s landed an internship at the new york times. problem is, they keep making him report on all the superhero vs supervillain fights around the city - which means he’s seen roman and remus fight against each other a million and a half times. the only issue with that is that he’s starting to watch these fights more intensely and notice a hell of more about how good remus’s costume looks on him. soon, damien’s juggling his job, his schoolwork, and the growing feeling that he might want a little bit more than friendship with remus.

Is this deceit literally saying, “you know what? Fuck it, you want honest I’ll give you honest. I’ll leave, have fun with the truth.”? Because that’s what it sounds like to me!

Deceit literally said “no longer will you deceive yourself”. Deceit saying that he won’t let Thomas lie anymore. Deceit, the embodiment of deceit, saying Thomas won’t lie to himself anymore.

I mean, they did spend a full video telling deceit how awful and evil lying was, so is it really that surprising that he would say “fine, have it your way-“ and make them deal with the truth themselves? To make them face everything he’s been hiding from Thomas for all these years?

They attacked Thomas’s self-preservation, and I think they are all about to learn why it’s never a good idea to bite the hand that feeds you. Not only dose deceit get Thomas to lie to others, but he lets Thomas lie to himself. Deceit is the one who tells Thomas that he’s okay when he’s really not, that everything going to be okay when he really has no idea if it will be or not, that he’s not a bad person when he dose something wrong. Because that’s his job as self preservation. The definition of self preservation is literally-

1 : preservation of oneself from destruction or harm.

And/or

2 : a natural or instinctive tendency to act so as to preserve one’s own existence.

I bloody love this. And if you ask me, this makes all the “tw Deceit” Tags unneccessary as hell.

Sure, what he does, isn’t ALWAYS nice, but he’s not as bad and triggering as people make him out to be. He has a purpose just like the others. The truth is that Thomas really, really NEEDS Deceit.

Besides, Roman, Patton and Logan aren’t flawless either, but no one hates on them. It’s about time they get a wake up call from Deceit.

I honestly agree. If you make a character abusive in fiction that’s one thing. And then you tag abusive X or unsympathetic X, but, especially if that character isn’t canonly adusive, a tw for X character is compleatly unnecessary. Especially here on tumblr where you can block tags. If you don’t like deceit, block #deceit, don’t be an ass to people who won’t use it. I tag sympathetic deceit, but that’s just because I enjoy sympathetic deceit and with all this deceit discorse going around the sympathetic deceit tag makes it easier to find it.

And let’s be real, who’s nice 24/7? Who’s always a good person? So far deceit has been the only one who has tried to get Thomas to care about himself, his own livelyhood and his own well being. You wanna talk about tw? How about Patton manipulating Thomas and making him feel like shit about wanting to take care of himself and his own mental health and his future instead of going to a wedding? But no one talks about that☕️☕️☕️

Atleast deceit wants what’s good for Thomas. You could argue that he goes about it wrong, but you also have to look at the fact that, as far as we know, deceit is the only one who gives a shit. He’s got no one to help him, no one to get advice from, and no one else input (input that he trusts/cares about that is) to go off of, this boys just doing what he thinks is best and he honestly probably wouldn’t have to go to such drastic measures if the others actually listensed to him-

Also- since deceit is self preservation, why would Thomas’s self preservation work to hurt him?? (It wouldn’t-)

Excellent addition, I must say.

That’s exactly my point. Literally no one is good 24/7 and perfect doesn’t exist (and would also be really boring if you ask me).

I’m gonna be honest here. The way Deceit was introduced really was something else and it got to me. He made me feel super uneasy, but I didn’t neccessarily dislike him. Now, after some time has past, I friggin’ enjoy each and every moment that he’s in a video. He’s hilarious.

He’s a refreshing character to a great series that has shown us almost nothing but fluff and happiness until this point, minus the AA arc of course, which was filled with so much angst, that you could practically touch it.

However, up to that point, the show was pretty harmless and rather humorous for the most part and we were all so used to Patton being this adorable and fluffy dad guy who wouldn’t hurt a fly. Now that we’ve seen that no, Patton actually isn’t as perfect as we thought he was, I see why this might be shocking to some people. I can see why they might want to ignore those parts about a Side, but in all honesty, it’s not a good idea. It doesn’t mean that Patton is evil, guys. He’s still adorable, he’s still funny as hell, sometimes a bit too annoying, but also very loving and caring about the other Sides. Well, and sometimes he can be too strict, like Logan pointed out in Dealing With Intrusive Thoughts. Patton even admitted it himself. Why did he admit it? Because Deceit said “fuck it all, you want honest, you get honest and now deal with the consequences of my absence”, just like the op said.

Anyway, I digress. I’ve brought this up in the past and I’m gonna say it again. None of the Sides is perfect and never will be. They are part of a whole and the show itself shows us a man who’s visually imagining his own thought processes in the form of the Sides who all represent just a part of Thomas/his personality. This show is about self-reflection, about learning to accept all aspects of your personality and make the best of it, to learn from your mistakes and to become the best version of yourself. In each episode Thomas is struggling with something and then the Sides pop up, trying to help hilm solve the problem, all of them in their individual way. They’re just fullfilling their purpose, so naturally each of them will go about it they way they think is the right one, just to find out that sometimes Virgil is overreacting, that Roman’s dreams are out of reach, that Patton is too strict or that Logan doesn’t show enough emotions, for example.

Now take Remus. As chaotic and, quite frankly, disgusting Remus is, he, just like Deceit, has a purpose. He said it himself. He told Thomas that if HE’s bad, than so is Thomas. Same goes for Deceit. He’s Thomas’s self preservation, so he can’t be just bad. Look how much havoc Remus was able to cause, just because Deceit ducked out this time. It was aweful for Thomas, which in conclusion means that Thomas really super needs Deceit. We all love Thomas the way he is (ray of sunshine), but he personally knows himself better than any of us ever could, so of course he knows about his own flaws. He just doesn’t really WANNA know, because who does want to admit that they’re not always honest? Or that they’re having some nasty thoughts sometimes, so much so that they might think they’re a bad person? Okay, now that I got this one off my chest, I think we can agree on one thing. When you write fics about either Deceit or Remus and you decide to portray them as truly evil characters, then that’s absolutely fine and I really think tagging accordingly makes absolute sense. To tag any and all Deceit/Remus content as tw Deceit / tw Remus or unsympathetic Deceit/Remus however is a bit too much of an overreaction, especially if you demand every Fander to do the same. This is how YOU perceive them or decide to portray them in your fanfiction, it’s NOT how they are portrayed in canon. Neither canon!Deceit nor canon!Remus are inherently bad, they just do what they do, like Remus put it. Intrusive thoughts are unpleasant, hell yeah, but did Thomas harm anyone, acting out his intrusive thoughts? No, he didn’t. Deceit decided to loosen the leash on Remus, so Thomas would learn what it would do to him, if Deceit wasn’t around to do his job. I just really wish people in this fandom would learn how to distinguish canon information from headcanons. There is no need for harassing people for pointing out mistakes or trying to force your headcanons or your dislike for one of the Sides onto others. Plus, if someone is having a mental illness, this illness should not be an excuse for anyone to demand constant sugar coating from everyone around them. We are not responsible for your illness. It is your job to protect yourself from harmful content. And sometimes you might come across content that isn’t even actually harmful to MOST people, but maybe to you specifically, because of your mental condition. Still, this gives you no right to demand anything from other users. Tumblr has all the functions you need to block tags, to unfollow or to just scroll past certain posts. Of course I think we should respect each other and act accordingly and only have respectful and friendly discourse (or whatever you want to call it), but someone disagreeing with your ideas/thoughts/headcanon doesn’t make them a bad person and isn’t automatically a personal attack. Simply agree to disagree and everything should be fine. No one is forcing you to look at content that might trigger you or to engage in a conversation that might not go into the direction you were hoping for. Maaan, this took forever, but I have seen some similar posts from friends, so I thought I should share my thoughts on it. Guys, just please….love all the Sides. They’re Thomas, all of them combined, and we love him, don’t we? 8D

Damn, I had to delete the other post, I pressed enter and woosh, it got reblogged too soon. XD Anyway, you’re welcome. LOL I think you’re right, obviously. I’ve come across many posts on Tumblr alone (not Sanders Sides related) that I absolutely disliked, just by chance, not by actively searching for it. Things that are unpleasant to look at or that disgusted me. You know what I did? Nothing. I didn’t harass this person for posting such a thing (unless it would violate the terms of service/human rights, anything like that like spreading hate etc.). I just kept scrolling or left the blog, went on to do other things or closed Tumblr. I looked at it, my eyes went wide and I was like ‘well shit, ugh no thanks, that’s disgusting’. And then I moved on with my life. There are so many cute and pleasant things to look at on the internet as well, so I searched for those instead which made me feel better and the problem was solved. I didn’t demand from the op to remove the post, to tag anything…do you actually wanna know how many people on Tumblr don’t even use ANY tags at all? They’re just lazy and reblog like crazy. (wow that rhymes XD). Some artists don’t even always tag their own stuff which drives me nuts, but still I don’t message them and say something rude. As far as Deceit is concerned, so we don’t forget the actual problem here, I agree with @lollingtothemax. I have nothing more to add, I think.

One of them

(My first fanfic so go easy 😂)

As Thomas grew the sides that defined him were prominent. Morality also called Patton, Creativity or Roman, and Logic or Logan. As these sides were praised and welcomed, the others faded to shadows. Deceit and Remus understood their place and accepted their fate, the third shadow was called Virgil, he was fear, becoming paranoia as time went on. Virgil knew what he was "supposed" to be, but he didn't understand why he was considered harmful. There's so many dangers out there, so many things to fear, so many chances of things going wrong, he's only protecting Thomas, no one else is, he needs to. For what felt like an eternity, he was a subtle echo in the back of Thomas's mind, barely a presence. As Thomas got older Virgil's whispers became louder, still he could never manifest as the light sides could. As long as Thomas is safe, he repeated.

One day he wasn't.

While walking home one day Virgil could have sworn the man behind Thomas was following him. Move faster he whispered, the man moved faster too. Virgil's heart kept beating, run he said, run, run he's screaming now shaking violently, suddenly he appears before the light sides, his voice booming almost demonic. Thomas listens he runs, panting, he ducks into an alley way, the man passes peacefully jogging.

Patton, Roman, and Logan, stare in fear and confusion.

Virgil gives a nervous sharp toothed grin.

Patton slowly walks toward him, Virgil cowers, covering his eyes, then he feels a warn presence on his shoulder.

It's Patton's hand, he looks up to find Patton smiling gently at him.

Patton speaks "Hey, kiddo it's okay, Thomas is okay." He reaches out for Virgils's hand.

Looking with slight distrust Virgil warily takes it.

"Good, now let's see how you fit in." Patton lets out a laugh.

Virgil may just be one of them after all.
