I actually recommend everyone write for a rarepair once because it completely changes your relationship with fandom. Engagement stops being numbers and starts being names. You know who's going to show up. You recognize usernames. Someone disappears for a while and then comes back and you're like “OH MY GOD WELCOME HOME.” It's incredibly wholesome. It is also deeply inconvenient when all six of you simultaneously get writer's block-

Every single fic update there is an author trying frantically to find the right balance between a nonchalant aside of "leave a comment if you enjoyed =)" and clinging desperately to the coat tails of a random stranger, dragging along behind them on the street wailing "Please, please! I have to know what you thought! I'm desperate to talk to people about this! Ask me about the alliterative repetition! Ask me about the symbolism!"

fandom etiquette as a whole died when people who didn’t grow up on fandoms became stans during lockdown, yes, but why am i seeing people openly mocking fics on twitter. why am i seeing screenshots of fics with captions like “bro what is this 😭.” why am i seeing people mock fic writers for not knowing how sports or theater or college or any other organization operates in the real world.
“college is absolutely nothing like this” “why are we writing four people on the team scoring a hat trick in one game” “so tech work is nothing like this, hope that helps!”
if you don’t like a fic, and if you can’t suspend your belief enough to enjoy a fic that exaggerates or ignores real-world orgs, you don’t have to read it. you don’t have to screenshot it and put it on blast for twitter. you don’t have to post a link to it in the replies. the back button is literally there on your phone. it’s not giving baby’s first fandom anymore, it’s giving entitled asshole and it isn’t as cute as you think it is.
I know it’s not a big deal but can we please stop writing in small text. It’s hard to read and it strains my eyes and it makes it hard for me to comprehend the text. I know it’s probs for the aesthetics or something but please I’m begging you

Now that tumblr has reblogs and likes displayed separately, if you're still only liking a post that already has more likes that reblogs I am frowning and throwing gumnuts at you. boo.

I guess I've never quite figured Tumblr out on the ratio between likes/reblogs and why they matter to people.
In case you're very new here, Tumblr doesn't have algorithms the way other sites do. What's on your dashboard is what gets reblogged by the people you've followed. You CAN turn on other methods of content, but given the way tumblr functions (with the tags being... well to put it kindly, a hot fucking mess and often subject to spam and even outright attacks where some groups will go posting gore and horror to a tag just to drive people out of it (though I think that's probably more common in the past than currently), most people users don't use those functions to see content. Because they're here, on Tumblr, for the customization. If you want algorithms that deliver you a constant stream of mind numbing drivel it thinks you're gonna like/be hooked on for hours, there are plenty of other sites. THIS one is the site for people that want to follow a group of people, and see JUST what those people post or reblog, and nothing else, and they want to see it in chronological order.
Tumblr is basically one of the if not The last place where you can do that. So you'll understand, hopefully, why people who come here for that use it that way.
Unfortunately, that means that the site runs on community and sharing. You don't have algorithms in your business, BUT you also don't really have them doing the legwork of showing your stuff to people. Users have to do that part themselves in order for things to work.
And hitting "like" is the equivalent of privately bookmarking a fanfic you liked. A reblog is the equivalent of hitting kudos. Tags and the comment sections are like commenting.
So when you hit "like" on a post, it doesn't really do anything for the post, or the poster. It doesn't tell an algorithm to show that post to other people. It doesn't being anyone else to the poster so others can see them. Hell most people have their likes hidden so it's not even like someone COULD go in and browse your likes to find more stuff. Liking something is JUST for your benefit and doesn't really add anything to the community.
And don't get me wrong. Plenty of people like to have likes. It's better than nothing.
But, a kudos is better than a private bookmark, and a reblog is better than a like.
A community is best served when the people in it are actually participating in it, and helping it thrive.

Basic Fandom Etiquette Everyone Needs to Remember:
Creators do not owe anyone content. Do not ask writers when they will update.
If an author did not ask for [negative] criticism , do not give criticism.
Read the tags carefully before reading a fanfic.
If you ignored the tags and were upset, that is your responsibility, not the creator’s.
Disliking a ship does NOT give you the right to attack people who enjoy it.
Do not tell authors or shippers that their ship is “disgusting,” “wrong,” or “shouldn’t exist.” Shipping fictional characters is not a moral failing.
No one is obligated to justify why they ship two fictional characters.
Headcanons are PERSONAL interpretations, not universal truth.
Dark themes in fiction do not equal real life beliefs or intentions.
Leaving kudos or short positive comments genuinely matters.
Not every fanwork is made for you, and that is okay.
Scrolling past content you dislike is better than engaging negatively
Enjoying a fandom later than others does not make someone less of a fan.
Disliking a fanfic does not entitle you to announce that to its creator. Sending hate comments to authors is NEVER justified, even if you disliked the work.
Wattpad: pay me monthly 🤩 and we will remove ads for you. also free offline stories I guess as long as you keep paying me. but we have censorship so keep your kinks to yourself. what we don’t have is tagging systems, so good luck trying to find what you want or avoiding what you don’t want to read lol
meanwhile AO3: so everything is free in our house. read whatever you want offline. also no ads. no capitalism. no censorship. be as wild as you want with your fics. also we have tagging systems so you can search or avoid any specific tags, pairings, relationships or characters. whatever you want.
I’m sorry but if you’re still complaining, you don’t realize how good you have it with AO3, one of the last platforms on the internet that is free of capitalism and censorship. just artists and writers creating and sharing their works with the community for free and for fun. just authentic love between artists, their works, characters, stories and audiences.
