Studio Ghibli Releases 400 Stills for Free Usage

Two days ago on September 18, 2020, the Japanese animated film production company announced the release of 400 free stills for fans to download and use.

The images were released on Studio Ghibli’s official website.

The co-founder, producer and at one point vice president of Studio Ghibli, Toshio Suzuki, included a note with the release of the images, stating,

“Feel free to use it within the bounds of common sense.” (Translated from Japanese).

The images released to the public include 50 stills from each of the following films:

When Marnie Was There

The Tale of Princess Kaguya

The Wind Rises

From Up on Poppy Hill

The Secret World of Arrietty/The Borrower Arrietty

Ponyo On the Cliff

Tales From Earthsea

Spirited Away

While Studio Ghibli is well known for its strict copyright, the company seems to be more open to sharing its films, allowing services such as Netflix and HBO Max to stream its movies. Releasing the images is yet another step by Studio Ghibli easing on its copyright.

Studio Ghibli intends to continue releasing more stills in the future, but for now, fans can download images from the 8 titles.
