BEFORE I MAKE THE OFFERING, REMEMBER ALL THE FACES THAT I’VE SEEN, NOW ALL THE MARKS HAVE SETTLED ON MY SKIN FROM ALL THE DIFFERENT PLACES THAT I’VE BEEN
A very rant-y poem about leaving my hometown to go to college
A ghost long gone
I can still see the outline of my fingertips
But I know I’m already gone
Calendar squares crossed out with the dullest blade
Hardly any space left until my inevitable metaphorical death
Frayed paper edges of infinite undone things
Fights I never apologized for
Gifts I never gave
Promises I forgot to keep
I know it’s a little wrong to say this is the end
But in a way it is
From the moment I leave this island things will never be the same
And I will be new
Of solid flesh
Without any remaining residue of in-between left in me
Without the beauty of nothingness to pad all of my mistakes
I may as well enjoy it while I can
I’m already dead
And when I live again this will only be the unfinished business of a ghost long gone
I’ve been thinking a lot about how gay people say I love you, and I mean that literally.
I’ve known people for a few hours most, and said “I love you” and meant it - new years parties, university tutorials, anime conventions - the gay woman who was a friend of a friend giving my friends and I a lift home in the winter cold was an angel, and I meant it when I said “Thank you, I love you, get home safe.” The person from high school that I lost touch with then reconnected with telling me about their girlfriend was like filling my lungs again for the first time in years, and I meant it when I said “Please, next time bring your girlfriend, I love her already.” My grandmother that told me about how she used to use bandages to bind back in the 80s and how her first husband was gay was the first person in my family to make me feel normal, and I meant it when I said “I love you, I hope you’re happy now.” The friend I found through our shared love of Scooby Doo and then proceeded to run the gamut of labels and pronouns with is my home 8000 miles away, and I still mean it when I say “I love you, we should call more.” And I mean it when I scream “I love you” to every person I meet in fleeting hugs and hand-holds at the pride parade, even when I’m overstimulated and exhausted by the time I get home, glitter-sick and shy.
I think we say I love you for every reason you could say I love you, but more than anything, it’s the simple fact of seeing someone who is your family that makes you want to grab them by the shoulders and tell them that you love them. Gay people have such a long history of being family and community when no one else would take us, and every time I see someone being openly queer, I love them. I love your smeared lip-gloss and your septum piercing and your dyed hair and your crooked teeth and your leather harness and your pronoun pins and your Doc Martens and your chipped nail polish and your loud laugh and your T-beard and your Adam’s apple and the way you twirl a little clumsily in your skirt. It’s 100 meanings of the word - what you said was funny, I love you - you’re a dickhead, but I love you - I’m glad you figured things out, I love you - you don’t need to say anything, I love you - thank God there’s another trans person here, I love you - you make me feel whole, I love you - we hurt each other, but I still love you.
There are words in this book of mine without meaning. Some with meaning with loosening threads wandering through. There are few stitched tight and full of promise. So I hold on tight and pray; the words held close to my chest between linked hands.
yasher koach - Jewish English Lexicon
Yasher koach:
Definition: good job, congratulations!
Etymology: Heb יישר כוח yasher koakh, Yiddish יישר־כּוח (ya)sh(er)-kóyekh, lit. 'straight strength/power' -> literally meaning "May it be for strength ("koach," in Hebrew);" that is, may what you just did be a source of strength.
It’s so interesting how yasher koach has become shkoach and all the other variations…yashar koach, yasher koyekh, shkoyekh, yishar koach, shkoyach, shkoyakh
yasher koach is such a good example of how phrases are said and meant differently across different communities
I got this snow globe as a graduation gift from my poetry teacher. I think I’ll name the wizard “Elijah the Elegant and Brave” and name the dragon “Eti Kantor the Wise and Sorrowful”. They are the best of friends.
ive started doing lino again. i forgot how nice it feels to make something out of nothing
I’d like to make something like this so I’m reposting this as a reminder 🎶
I love my friends. We're getting in the car to head home after a day of hanging out and one just brings out her phone to look up directions. She sings quietly to herself "take me home, country roads..." which ends up in my other friend and I singing after without prompting "...to the place I belong". We all just sat in the car singing very badly and off tune. No hesitation, no questions. We share a single braincell between the 3 of us and we use it to randomly break into song in the middle of a parking lot.
I have this level of comfort with my friends now, but now I’m leaving for college and I hope I can find people to do this with there.
‘what do the woods hold for me?’ I whisper to the leaves. ‘what words feed your roots, what currents stir your branches? hold old you are, how rough your bark– what wisdom will you tell?’
‘quiet’ said the stirring trees.
‘shall i rest beneath your boughs and listen to your sighs? I will listen– I will– to anything you say.’
‘quiet’ said the gnarled roots.
‘I can place my head against your trunk and feel the pulse of life. you are so old, so knowing. what have you for me?’
‘quiet’ and the trees looked away. ‘do not listen to our leaves, do not dig among our roots. be quiet’
the forest pushed its roots deeper and turned in on itself. ‘we have nothing for you that is worth more than peace. stop listening for lessons you do not need. if you dig deep enough you will suffocate in the dirt of your own search.’
This sadness I feel is shallow
My face well above the water
But still all I can hear is the subtle ebb and flow of the tides
I love you QPRs, I love you polyamory, I love you relationship anarchy, I love you aromantics with partners, I love you people who don’t want relationships, I love you I admire you loveless community, I love you ignoring amatonormativity <3
This makes my heart happy.
Hope may be a bird but I believe it is a fish.
It slides through the rippled depths;
Popping up for a moment,
Shining it’s silver scales into light deprived eyes
And then vanishing again.
Tonight we will feast.
Sickness has crawled it’s way back into my life.
My friends and family wrapped in their ghostly vines.
Keeping them just out of reach.
I’m feeling a bit hopeless.
And I guess that’s okay.
*through gritted teeth* every day i choose to be kind *barely restraining myself from violence* i choose to have compassion *tamping down the vicious bloodlust inside me* i choose to care and to be kind and to love
How many birds does it take to destroy a stone?
Two, with thoughts of revenge fueling them.
The Covid chronicles. It’s been a week. I’m going mad. At least there’s soup and tea and I’m almost free.
