The tragedy of racism
I had lunch with a friend today and she confessed to me that she’d been crying for the past few days over the death of Sandra Bland. I confessed that I’d been crying too, that I’d been mourning the loss of this woman’s life, the decline of our country, and our humanity. After she heard that she said, “I get that me crying over her death isn’t the same as you crying.” My friend, who is white, believes that since she’s white, she cannot mourn Sandra the way I have. That her pain is not valid and that her tears are of no significance because she is crying over a woman who doesn’t share the same skin color as her and who’s experience she cannot fathom. And this, I think, is the true tragedy of racism: that “othering” is so extremely entrenched in our society, that my friend can’t see that when she’s crying for Sandra Bland, she’s not crying over the death of a black person, she’s crying over a person. A woman, who had a really shitty encounter with a cop that somehow ended in her death. My friend imagined that happening to her and how horrifying it would be. She thought about how Sandra must’ve felt, how scared she must’ve been, how the turn of events must’ve left her reeling and she cried. But somehow felt that she wasn’t allowed to. That as a white person mourning over the loss of a black person’s life was wrong, or weird, or shameful.
Sheesh. What a fucking tragedy to question mourning the loss of human life. To empathize, to connect is what makes us human. Racism has created the inhumane perception that we are different when in fact we are the same. The illusion that there is a divide, when there truly is none. Yes, our experiences are vastly different. But if injustice happens to one person it happens to all of us. If black people are persecuted that means that we live in a country that tolerates the persecution of it’s citizens. If black people are murdered by the police and those police are never brought to justice, that means we live in a country that tolerates the state sponsored murder of their electorate. We are all Sandra Bland, Sam Dubose, Freddie Gray, Eric Garner. These deaths are not just a black issue, they are a human issue.

My former co-star, Arthur Rowan just posted this for his #TBT from when we did Beauty and the Beast opposite each other way back when in 2005 and it made my little heart skip a beat. Le sigh! Gone are my #Disney princess days! #runonsentence

Day #9 #performer #profile for #raisetheroof #fundraiser! Info in bio or at www.standardtoykraft.org Charla Lauriston is a gloriously great #comedian and to have her for the fundraiser is RIDICULOUS, BRO! She is the star and creator of her own series, Clench & Release (#clenchshow) which just embarked on its second season to a huge audience at @littlefield. Her series has been glowingly compared to "Seinfeld" and "Louie" which is kind of a huge deal. She has also lended her comedic writing to TheRoot.com for humorous recaps of Scandal and has also appeared in content for @ELLE.com Most recently, Charla wrote for Season One of #UnbreakableKimmySchmidt. (That's right, that show you're all obsessed with.) She is just so great and has lit up stand-up stages from #UCB to @ThePITnyc to Night Train with Wyatt Cenac and everywhere in between. She's a female version of a hustler. (Diva.) Charla Lauriston! #brooklyn #events #newyorkcity #comedy #stories #cool #kewl (at Standard ToyKraft)
Day 8 #performer #profile for #RaiseRoof #fundraiser! Link in bio for info or at www.standardtoykraft.org! We’re going to try to list them all because it’s really impressive. She’s appeared multiple times in the prestigious Just for Laughs Festival, and hosts the wildly popular podcast, My Sexy Podcast. She’s appeared on Last Comic Standing and @VH1's Best Week Ever and in Canada, she was regularly onMUCHMusic’s Video On Trial. Most impressively between all the comedy, Sabrina also did a TEDTalk on diversity and honesty that has been seen by the masses featured on Upworthy. She’s such an amazing ball of energy and such an exciting performer and individual to be around that she’s sure to leave a great impression on you. We cannot wait to have her! SABRINA JALEES!

Day 6 of #RaiseTheRoof #fundraiser performer highlight! Visit: www.standardtoykraft.org for more info! Today we’re going to tell you about TWO amazing performers to kick off the week! First off, there’s Scott Johnson! Scott Johnson is a stand-up who has performed all over the city from the Nuyorican Poets Club to Eastville Comedy Club. He hails from Lawrence, Kansas where he has performed his own full length stand-up show at the historic Liberty Hall. In addition to stand-up, he improvised regularly with VH1’s Behind the Music at The People’s Improv Theater and has toured with improv team, Maybe Sherman. He has studied comedy at The Second City and Improv Olympic in Chicago and Upright Citizens Brigade here in New York. Next up is Jamie LeeLo! She is the host and creator of Brunch Night! With Jamie LeeLo, a talk show style show in which she has interviewed stars from Orange is the New Black, Gotham, and many more. She most recently hosted Brunch Night at the prestigious Waldorf Astoria. Jamie is also a stand-up and storyteller who tours with Awkward Sex and the City. She has studied comedy at The Second City, The People’s Improv Theater and Upright Citizens Brigade. Fun fact: even though they’re performing separately for the event, Jamie and Scott once did an improv scene together and it was hilarious! Side note: Can’t tell who’s prettier. Luckily they’re equally funny in their own unique ways!
AND work hard at work worth doing! We think Leslie Knope and Maya Angelou would have been friends 💛 Today would have been Dr. Angelou’s 87th birthday 👑
