A lot of people on twitter wanted me to explain how I draw expressions, so here you go

Unless you're drawing explicit realism, in my opinion, expressions should be exaggerated to some degree. If you aren't doing a 1:1 recreation, the point is to get the FEELING across. Try making the expression you want to draw and feeling how your face pinches and stretches.

Skin doesn't just "disappear" when your face moves it around --- that's where wrinkles come from! Pay attention to where your skin creases when you emote, and use it to your benefit. It's a fine line between overdoing it and underdoing it -- find your own balance.

Ultimately, every expression has a little bit of push and pull, unless your face is completely neutral (and even then, there are still some wrinkles...). Learning to think of expressions as actions and reactions is VERY helpful in learning to draw them without needing a reference, and in learning how to stylize and push expressions based on references as well!

I think a lot of people end up with stiff or unexpressive emotions in their art because they're just trying to recreate a picture instead of understanding WHY and HOW the face is moving --- and it's a tough thing that takes a while to really pick up and learn. Hopefully is helpful in showing a way of thinking about it that can influence your process and approach to emotions!!!

Also, bonus: even without the lines, the planes alone still show a LOT of emotion.

do we ever talk about the fatphobia surrounding rise raph? like the whole ‘the rise designs are ugly’ thing… it’s always RAPH who’s the problem. cuz he’s BIGGER than his brothers. I think the cowaboomer pushback probably wouldn’t have been as bad if it weren’t for the fact Raph is large and that’s kinda miserable to think about to me

before anyone says ‘he’s not fat he’s muscular’ doesn’t matter, he’s plus sized. he can be considered fat anyway (Donnie’s ‘you were in your doing sit ups every day phase’ always stands out to me)

no matter what like…. Complaining that a character is LARGE… is. You know. and then trying to justify it like ‘well they’re ninjas he wouldn’t be good at that’ fuck you fuck you fuck you fuck you

idk I just feel like it’s an issue hanging in the air and if you don’t call it out you don’t help anybody think it through and unlearn anything. he’s a problem to some people cuz he’s big, and thats sad. and then him being big reflects both on the other characters designs being considered ‘bad’ and also on his popularity, which tends to be below his brothers. every other Raph is more popular to their iteration than him and that’s. really fucking sad to me.

I’m not knocking anyone’s tastes that’s not what it’s about, it’s just kinda OBVIOUS what the reason might be. the unchecked biases. Raph is always a fan favourite, but with rise he tends to be the least popular (we can’t ignore the racial coding here either, both Mikey and Raph disappear under the disaster twins popularity)

it’s pretty crazy too when you consider him being the like emotional core of the shows finale, with how he takes the thing we tend to love of every other LEO… and while there are a thousand takes about every Leo’s trauma and how he carry’s the weight of the world on his shoulders… here’s a Raph big enough to do just that and he gets far less attention because of it.

I dunno. Obviously the under appreciated nature of rise for its entire time AIRING might be part of the issue, but again… Raph is the biggest issue people ever had with rise if we’re being honest. The judging of a book by its cover started with ‘why is Raph so big’ And they’re WRONG for that.

Imma be so real with everyone here. Rise raph wouldve been my fav if the fandom treated him better. Im always reminded how much I love him when I rewatch the show. (He is my second fav rise turtle if we only look at canon) And i think thats why Im naturally drawn to him when IM THE ONE BEHIND THE WHEEL. Bc 90% of the time I cant stand how the fandom portrays him so when its just me and canon, im like YES, YOU I LIKE YOU SO MUCH.

Personal pereference time! I think its bc when people write raph its usually in relation to leo. And i do not really care for how the fandom portrays that dynamic. Mainly bc it ONLY becomes about LEOs trauma and LEOs issues. And...ill read disaster twins stuff if i want that bc its usually more balanced when its donnie and leo as opposed to raph and leo. Raph gets overshadowed HARD. His issues always revolve around his BROTHERS as opposed to HIM.

I really hate agreeing with this post but it is so true. Raph is a fan favorite in every other iteration and it is incredibly telling that hes...not in the rise fandom specifically. The only iteration where he's shaped bigger then the others. There is no main character in rise, BUT the show heavily leans on raph for the main plot lines. HES THE ONE THAT SEES SPLINTERS MEMORY. HES THE ONE THAT HELPS THEM UNLOCK THEIR NINPO. HES THE ONE THAT DRIVES THE PLOT FORWARD.

Like...rise is raphs show in a way in terms of THE PLOT. (More things i blame the movie for....the shift to leo just amplified peoples preconcieved biases)

So its really sad that he's the most sidelined in the fandom. You just know that if he was shaped like leo or donnie, he'd get more fandom appreciation. Like....im sorry. Its painfully obvious. And Im aware that its really hypocritical of me since I havent made more moves to fix that. And that unlike donnie centric stuff, im hyper critical of people writing raph. Something that feels so obvious, but I see no one talk about. Raph could have died. Raph expected to die. He ran to save Leo, without even considering whether or not he would survive the blow. Lots of people talk about the what-if of it. But from an outside perspective. What if Raph didn't survive the blow? Not Raph's perspective of I must save Leo, not even considering: "What if I don't survive this?"

Yet his expression after finding out he lived is only love, concern, and understanding for Leo-never himself. Not even a single thought, shock, or anything about the potential of his dying.

Even in the aftermath, when he is being tortured by the Krang, he tells them the equivalent of 'Just kill me'. He no longer cares as his brother is safe. His self-worth is nonexistent, yet no one talks about it. His own constant and daily sacrifice for his family is undermined and overshadowed by Leo's big sacrifice at the end of the movie. (raph also sacrificed himself similarly for Donnie regarding the shredder, though the stakes were lower, my point still stands)

Which is funny because Raph was also sacrificing his life to save his family from the Krang. Buying them time. Yet it is swept under the rug. Because Leo did it to rid fully of the Krang. It seems like it doesn't matter that Raph did it-he sacrificed his body and mind to the Krang. Like Leo- but again, who cares because that's Raph's job, right? Be the shield. Nothing more. Donnie and Mikey didn't even know if Raph was confirmed dead or alive. They just assumed he was- Leo never told them, they never even got to see his giant hole in his shell till he is infected. They have no idea where it came from.

Also fun detail, he's in the same/similar position both when he sacrifices himself for Leo and when Leo sacrifices himself. :)

you are so right and you should say it! don't get me wrong, i love Donnie and Leo's angst but come on! people often don't even mention Raph's self-sacrifice for Leo meanwhile Leo's self-sacrifice is talked about by everyone, which- i get Leo's sacrifice is more flashy and right at the end so it's more fresh in people's minds (and I'm also a big Leo hater fan so really, really and truly I ✨understand✨) but also HELLO? how can people look at this:

and not have their hearts rip out of their chests??? and he basically gave up the moment Leo was out of there I'm losing my mind!

and yet people kind of... ignore it while still creating new fucked up consequences for Donnie from the brief moment he merged with the ship, which I appreciate! the effort/creativity put into making your blorbo hurt is something i admire and I do myself but- *points at Raph* there's so much potential here! and i'd know because people like to give Donnie: possession plot/body horror/krang body alternations/etc which all are basically... Raph plots? because Raph spent most of the movie: captured/tortured/altered/transformed/controlled to hurt his family/and many many more! and despite it all Raph is often shown as least affected physically and mentally (outside of maybe his eye being damaged sometimes) but Donnie (and often Leo as well let's be honest) get SUPER affected from their brief moment with the Krang.

and this like- idk, favoritism(?) is visible not only with how fandom portrays present timeline, in fics/aus/comics about the Bad Future it's usually Donnie's death that has way more weight than Raph's! and in general Donnie's death is way more explored than Raph's, whose death is usually just an echo in most stories, which is a shame, honestly. And finding a fic where Raph's alive for even the briefest moment? what a treat!

and listen, i must repeat, i get it! everyone has different favorite characters, we often don't even actively choose to which character our brain latches into so I understand and it shouldn't be anybody's job to engage with characters/plot points that just don't do anything for us! but my gosh, Raph deserves to be talked about more... just in general :") damn even Mikey tends to get more attention considering his wounds and trauma even though he is also pretty neglected in the fandom ;;
