The reason James calls Betty's friends "stupid" likely isn't because they think they are all dumb shallow teenage girls and James is a snobby prick, but the same reason they weren't dancing with Betty at the prom and kissing Betty on the porch, out in public and unashamed, is their biggest wish: There is something that keeps James and Betty apart and makes both of them afraid to be together in public. And it's safe to assume that the expectations Betty's friends have feed into that. This desperation to just be with one another, despite all the odds and all the stupid friends who will stick up their nose at James and Betty once they get together, is why it's so easy to read the song as queer, but even if you think James is a boy, the desperation is still there. Maybe they are seperated by social class or prejudices, whatever, but there clearly is something that stands in their way, and to reduce James to "evil dumb teenage cheater!" (as much as Taylor backs up that reading) brushes aside a lot of the clues we are given about their relationship with Betty.

Anyone want to talk about how the Hanging Gardens of Babylon May or may not have existed? Like to this day, people don’t know if it is a mythical thing or if it really existed. There is no proof of its existence. So let’s rework this lyric “now you hang from my lips like a garden that may or may not be fictional” or “ now you hang from my lips like a garden that there is no proof of ever existing”.

i think this is a big theme of the album -> is it real or is it fictional? if there’s no body, is there a crime? if its all in my head tell me now, tell me i’ve got it wrong somehow. as if youre a mythical thing. but you’ll find the real thing instead. it was real enough to get me through. 

so fictional from who’s perspective? the partners? the outside looking in? both? no one around to tweet it... id die for you in secret...etc
