TW: climate catastrophe
Okay, so I have been part of the climate movement for years now and I knew the situation is bad and I also knew that we don't have time and have to act now. But today, during a talk of a marine biologist and climate scientist, I realised HOW bad it really is and that there's actually NO time left.
We can't escape the crisis. We are already in the middle of it. There's no way to go back to the times when we had fewer extreme weather phenomena. On the contrary. If we look at the prognosis of a hot summer and think 'oh damn, this will be rough! we have to get through this safely', surprise: this is the new reality. There's no going back. What's past is prologue. We will have to deal with the heat constantly. We will have to deal with floods and wildfires and storms, even if we did all that is humanly possible to fight this crisis. To lower the world temperature by a few degrees nature needs millions of years (this is what happened after the end of the dinosaurs). We screwed up over the last 170 years and it is irreversible.
The only thing we can do is to slow it down and stabilise this fragile system at a point where we as a species are still able to survive. The biggest tipping points of our system are between 1.5 and 2°C global warming. Last year we reached 1.5° for the first time. There's no time left. If we fail, we'll fail completely.
I always thought that the problem is, that rich people will always be able to escape this terrifying future. That their money will help them to continue their lives even if the rest of the world is doomed. But today I understood that I was wrong. There's no way to escape. All their money will not help them when the supply chains of their companies aren't working anymore. When the people can't afford their products. If we don't act now we will reach a point at which money is irrelevant.
And maybe that's the biggest chance we get: we have to scare the rich people. We need them to notice that they are as doomed as we are. That they can't sell their products to a dead man. And that dead workers can't do their work anymore. Maybe that's where we have to start.
Scare the shit out of them.
