All this ao3 discourse is tiring. All this “we should flag stuff, we should sanitize stuff” is draining.
I wrote a story once, the one I like to refer as “the bloody fic”. It’s violent, there’s gore, there’s blood, there are description of violent acts and corpses. All of these were tagged, multiple times. I used every tag that was available and I could think of:
I love to read gore, I love to watch gore, I love to write gore. It’s my favourite genre. I had so much fun writing this fic. And I sneaked in a wound fuck scene that I read in a book once, and loved so much that I wanted to write it myself. And sure, it was “sudden and out of nowhere” because it was made that way. I did tag my fic as splatterpunk, which is a genre in itself, where bad and disgusting stuff might happen just for shock value, but I understand most people don’t know about it. And granted, I left a note saying that the story is mild gore to me, but to others it could be too much.
First comment I get it’s on the line of “this is too much, your tags are far from sufficient, no no no just no, I am traumatised for real”.
Thing is… It was tagged.
So whenever I read another post on how we should sanitize stuff on ao3, on how we should flag content, on how we should tag every single thing that happens in the fic so the reader knows and won’t be shocked or traumatised or whatever, there’s only thing that comes to my mind: maybe you should learn to read the warnings first.
This. I had a fic that I tagged for everything that was in there. Then this happened:

I had tagged for alcoholism, forced marriage, character death, coma, disability, miscarriage, prostitution, implied torture, and depression. What else should I have done?
For some people, it’s never enough. Learn to read the warnings.
We started using the tag “dead dove: do not eat” for fics like these. It meant, “ No really: not joking about the warning tags. Hardcore stuff here. Keyword warnings may not be sufficient; please assume this may be worse than your average skullfucking fic. Do not read if these tags relate to content that might bother you, because this fic is likely to be traumatic for some people.”
Aaaaand then people started using DD:DNE for “a 16-year-old flirts with a 22-year-old” and any value of the tag was lost.

I'm lucky to be part of a community now where the creators of the thing are so encouraging and supportive of fan artists, and I don't think they would be likely to take legal action. But a few years ago I was in Marvel, which is owned by Disney. You better believe Disney will snap a cease and desist on you so fast you'll be spinning. Same for anything owned by WB, Hulu, etc.
