Something I don't think we talk enough about in discussions surrounding AI is the loss of perseverance.

I have a friend who works in education and he told me about how he was working with a small group of HS students to develop a new school sports chant. This was a very daunting task for the group, in large part because many had learning disabilities related to reading and writing, so coming up with a catchy, hard-hitting, probably rhyming, poetry-esque piece of collaborative writing felt like something outside of their skill range. But it wasn't! I knew that, he knew that, and he worked damn hard to convince the kids of that too. Even if the end result was terrible (by someone else's standards), we knew they had it in them to complete the piece and feel super proud of their creation.

Fast-forward a few days and he reports back that yes they have a chant now... but it's 99% AI. It was made by Chat-GPT. Once the kids realized they could just ask the bot to do the hard thing for them - and do it "better" than they (supposedly) ever could - that's the only route they were willing to take. It was either use Chat-GPT or don't do it at all. And I was just so devastated to hear this because Jesus Christ, struggling is important. Of course most 14-18 year olds aren't going to see the merit of that, let alone understand why that process (attempting something new and challenging) is more valuable than the end result (a "good" chant), but as adults we all have a responsibility to coach them through that messy process. Except that's become damn near impossible with an Instantly Do The Thing app in everyone's pocket. Yes, AI is fucking awful because of plagiarism and misinformation and the environmental impact, but it's also keeping people - particularly young people - from developing perseverance. It's not just important that you learn to write your own stuff because of intellectual agency, but because writing is hard and it's crucial that you learn how to persevere through doing hard things.

Write a shitty poem. Write an essay where half the textual 'evidence' doesn't track. Write an awkward as fuck email with an equally embarrassing typo. Every time you do you're not just developing that particular skill, you're also learning that you did something badly and the world didn't end. You can get through things! You can get through challenging things! Not everything in life has to be perfect but you know what? You'll only improve at the challenging stuff if you do a whole lot of it badly first. The ability to say, "I didn't think I could do that but I did it anyway. It's not great, but I did it," is SO IMPORTANT for developing confidence across the board, not just in these specific tasks.

Idk I'm just really worried about kids having to grow up in a world where (for a variety of reasons beyond just AI) they're not given the chance to struggle through new and challenging things like we used to.

YES!!

One of my point in my anti ai existence is that people these days in general are just so obsessed with making things perfect. And of sources it’s good to try to do your best and protect and be better, but it’s okay to make mistakes and it’s okay to not know things sometimes! It’s the struggles and the process that teach ya things.

What do you think is more valuable? Making a ‘perfect’ poem that rhymes and it’s poetic in five minutes to turn in a homework, or spending an hour coming up with your own poem that maybe isn’t the best of the best, but you did it yourself. Sure, ai poetry might sound better on the surface, it’s easy to do too, but will you remember it afterwords? Will you want to share it with friends and family? Will you experience joy when you read it back? I don’t think so! But all that’s possible when you write it yourself! Because that’s what makes it human and beautiful and that’s what give any creation a soul!

In my uni there’s an American literature class in the literature department that require students to write a modern poetry of their own. And it allows ai!! It’s so stupid like, this is THE group of students in this school that studies literature, and this is one of THE easiest sort of poetry to write—there’s no specific structure, no rules about rhyming, you can write it any way you like, so why is ai an option? Because students are afraid that they won’t write it ‘good enough’! But that’s stupid because no way you will write the next ‘Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer’s Day’ by writing this one off poem for a class, so why be afraid of ‘high standards’?

On the other hand, you will not become the next William Blake or Emily Dickerson if you use ai! You will never be ‘great’ if you don’t do it yourself, that’s just fact!! When you use ai, and keep using ai, you are dooming yourself to never be great.

I understand using ai responsibly as adults, doing complicated works that need more than one brain to do, I do not think it’s absolutely necessary and I still do not support it, but what I will absolutely NOT ALLOW is letting kids use ai. Because by doing this you are allowing them to not be great. To not progress in their skills. To kill their own value and creativity. THATS JUST PLAIN EVIL. Let the kids and students do their work! Let them struggle in a way that makes them learn, let them struggles so they find a way out! I don’t mean to let them struggle pointlessly, but ‘no pain, no gain’ is real. That’s why schools and education exist!!! Don’t kill the next generations with ai!!!!

Some AAVE speakers pluralize 'child' as 'childrens'. People get racist about this ("It's already plural!"), but 'children' actually comes from Middle English speakers doing the same thing: slapping their plural marker on word already pluralized by an extinct plural marker.

To oversimplify: in Old English, 'childer' ('ċildra') was the plural of 'child' ('ċild'). Middle English developed an '-en' plural marker, which we see in 'oxen'. I can't articulate how utterly inhumane it is that we've not only normalized, but valorized, sleep deprivation. We treat it like an achievement.

Sleep deprivation increases your risk for a myriad of serious illnesses like heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes, and stroke.

And that's just to name a few.

Some of the most important cellular work we do all day happens while we're sleeping. When we don't get enough quality sleep and rest, our cells literally can't effectively repair themselves.

It literally damages every system in our bodies.

Capitalism lies.

Getting enough sleep is actually one of the most meaningfully "productive" things we can do.
