stop. analyse that text through the lens of its author's intentions and original historical context. okay now take the author out back and kill them dead and analyse that text as though it were published by your mutual yesterday and is in direct conversation with the contemporary discourse that's most relevant to your life. okay now pick your favorite angle of interpretation and come up with the strongest possible argument against it. now imagine that the text is your best friend and that it means you well and that you naturally give it every benefit of the doubt because you're on its side and you want the best for it. now imagine that the text wants you dead and it'll eat you if you don't eat it first. now pretend that you found this text locked away in a cave with no evidence of when or where it came from and you have to divine its meaning solely through its internal coherence and nothing else. okay now address the elephant in the room aspect of the text you've been ignoring because you find it boring or confusing or uncomfortable and become the number one expert on it. now spend forty minutes assigning all the characters dnd classes with at least three sentences of reasoning each. okay now do the cha cha slide.

the whole idea of “genital preferences” feels like a way to degrade women (including cis women) tbh.

like I remember being a young dyke who was closeted and wanted to date girls but being so scared I was wrong, because I was seeing constant jokes and media hammering the idea that you might Think you like women, you might like Kissing women, but until you taste a vulva then you can never know for sure (so you shouldn’t risk it, since you don’t want to lead anyone on, better to never have queer sex). all these narratives showing “straight” girls getting that far and then realizing with disgust and horror that they are innately, Categorically Not Into Women because they do not enjoy a specific sex act with a specific genital configuration (because obviously that’s the only Real Lesbian way to fuck /s). and then returning to the “safety” of dating cis men.

and like the exact same thing applies to women with penises too. this idea that, well you might Think you’re attracted to her, you might like kissing her, but until you go down on her (cause obviously all sex with trans women involves contact with her penis /s) then you can never know for sure (so you shouldn’t risk it, since you don’t want to lead anyone on, better to never have sex with trans women). there’s an even greater volume of media and narratives, even more viscerally and violently, portraying people’s disgust at trans women’s privates, and then returning to the “safety” of dating cis people.

& it’s like hm, so we’re never questioning whether the constant misogynistic messaging about women’s genitals (literally no matter what they are!) is perhaps part of the reason people are socially incentivized to feel and express disgust towards them? no connection there? genitals are all just innately disgusting when they’re On Women and thats just a normal biological thing that has nothing to do with any social influence. it’s just biology that queer & trans women are disgusting? there’s no connection between people receiving constant messaging that performing oral sex on women is gross and the “orgasm gap” and the statistical reality that lesbians (cis and trans) tend to come out later in their lives than gay men & are more afraid of sexual rejection? none of that is related. i get why people are skeptical of claims about “rising antisemitism” in a world where a genocidal state is claiming everyone standing up to them is being antisemitic, but the reality is that the average person actually genuinely is being more antisemitic. every comment section on every single post i saw about Holocaust Remembrance Day was like this

the more i watch star trek tos, the more it becomes abundantly clear that the reason why modern trek doesnt get kirk at all is because they dont utilise mccoy nearly as much anymore

in modern trek, they always present the idea of logic vs emotion, with spock being logic and kirk being emotion, but thats not how tos has it. in tos, the logic vs emption debate is spock vs mccoy. kirk is supposed to be the mediator between the two, sometimes siding with one side over the other, sometimes finding a middle ground between the two. thats why hes the captain, hes able to see all angles and pick the best course

when you make kirk the emotional one, it completely breaks the format, because 9 time out of 10, it means kirk has to be correct. theres no more balance

mccoy is just as important to tos as spock is, and while i do understand why spock is as popular as he is, without mccoy, the show doesnt work. you need them both. kirk spock and mccoy are the three leads of the show, and removing one requires you to change the others, which is whats happened to kirk

When I teach rhetoric in my college essay writing/analysis course, it's always with the example of Kirk, Spock, AND McCoy. Ethos, Logos, Pathos--you need all three. Kirk isn't the counterweight to Spock; he's the fulcrum that balances Spock and McCoy.

Kirk isn't emotion. Kirk is ethos: credibility, authority. Spock and McCoy are there to stop him from damaging that credibility by falling back on an authority he doesn't actually have in the situation, to remind him of the logic or compassion that's lacking when an abuse of power would be the easy or basely satisfying thing to do.

What keeps Kirk credible is that he usually chooses the most ethical thing to do based on the information he has; what makes him a good leader, outside of his own innate abilities, is his understanding that he requires these two trusted advisors to keep him on an even keel. When Kirk says "I need you" to both Spock AND Bones, he means it.

It's also about how both McCoy *and* Spock see preserving life as the most important thing - but in different ways.

Should you create a 1% chance of killing 100 crew to save one person? How about two people? How about a 2% chance? And what if we remember the crew volunteered for dangerous situations and the person/people at risk did not? What about a 50% chance of death for five volunteers? Do those at risk count as people? Etc.

You can probably say what Spock and McCoy would say in each case - but the point is that neither is ever wrong. That's what creates the dramatic tension.
