Say you break your ankle. You could know everything there is to know intellectually about the injury. Even with this vast knowledge, you will still experience physical pain.
Now take this logic and apply it to things like ADHD, autism, clinical depression, and other less visible/divergent disabilities. You cannot think your way out of feeling.
That is to say: you are not a bad, lazy, or selfish person for struggling, even if you know why you are struggling.
was doing a first aid course and it kept talking about how when applying first aid to a child you have to ask the PARENT for consent and how the child's consent is not enough unless you cannot reach the parent. and then immediately after there was a unit on shaken baby syndrome, and then mentioned abuse as a common source of children getting injured. and they didn't see the irony there. i later asked the instructor what to do about parental consent if the medical emergency was from the parent abusing the child and she was like "you still need to obtain parental consent. you can report the abuse though" not even acknowledging how fucked the whole system is. i hate it here. youth rights now
touches U in a very weird but non sexual way
There's always a moment of intense cultural whiplash whenever I realize I'm talking to someone who thinks "legal" and "illegal" are meaningful categories and ascribes innate goodness to following the law. It's like meeting a space alien.
beautiful drawing I saw in the women's bathroom last night at the bar
i’m not even that much of a pervert i can just find the eroticism in anything. doesn’t get me bricked up necessarily i just like to appreciate it.
drawing him is my saving grace
The idea of “but everyone knows that” needs to stop.
I saw a post about someone chiding Millennials for not knowing about JKRowlings transphobia, and asking how it is at all possible that people can exist in the world and the internet and, you know, not know.
Which I mean, I get. It is so present in so many of my online spaces that it seems astounding that someone could simply be ignorant! It feels impossible!
But let me tell you a story:
I went on a girls trip with a bunch of friends. All of us are rather incredibly liberal and all of us are incredibly online.
One girl would not stop talking about Harry Potter.
At one point, another girl asked her why she was ok with supporting it, and she had no real clue that JK Rowling was at all transphobic. She had heard that she likes to support Lesbian causes and thought “oh ok cool!” And that was it. She was AGOG with the news and rather horrified.
I must once again emphasize that she was an incredibly online person. She’s a foodie and a restaurant blogger.
Later in the trip we were picking restaurants and I suggested one I found on Google, and she gasped at me. Actually gasped, asking how I could ever be okay picking that one.
The shock must’ve been on my face, because she then told me all of the shitty things that restaurateur does. He abuses staff. Underpays them. Fires them on a whim. Is known for being one of the worst people to his employees in the entire restaurant business on this coast.
And she was so shocked I had never heard of this. Because in her mind, I was just as online as her. And in her online world, EVERYONE knew about this guy.
So I think the moral of this story is: always approach the other person with some empathy. Even online people, even people you think MUST know about how bad people are, may not have heard. It may truly be just them being on a different sphere of the internet than you.
So be gentle, be kind when letting people know they might not have heard about the cancellation of XYZ person. Don’t assume that everyone knows all the same info as you.
By all means, let them know so they can make informed decisions, but being kind will go a lot further than attacking them for some info they might not know yet.
i'm so sorry, i walked marginally more than a mile in your shoes. my understanding of you has subsumed my own consciousness, i am you to a greater extent than you ever were, and you are merely a simulacrum to the true you, which is me.
I walked half a mile in your shoes, and then stopped and walked the other half-mile back in the opposite direction to finish where I started, and thus I am empathetically unchanged by the experience and have learned nothing about you.
*through gritted teeth* when i do something wrong and am politely asked to change my behavior its just a simple request to fix a problem and not an indictment of my character. when i do something wrong and am politely asked to change my behavior its just a simple request to fix a problem and not an indictment of my worth as a human being
*gripping the sink and staring into the mirror* i can regulate my emotions and move on from well-intentioned polite criticism by resolving to change my behavior in the future without dwelling on the shame and guilt. i can regulate my emotions in a healthy way and move on and not get stuck scrolling tumblr for an hour and a half to just blast my brain w stimulation to avoid my negative feelings. oh wait its too late for that last one
Iron Lung is great bc it asks the question what if the sacrificial lamb was evil. What if the lamb thought itself evil. What if everyone else thought the lamb evil. What if the lamb wasn't evil what if the lamb is just a lamb, bleeting desperately to escape its undue sacrifice. What if the lamb knew it was a sacrifice from the start. What if the lamb just wanted to live. What if the lamb wanted to live so fucking bad. What if the lamb wanted the flock to live more. What if the lamb accepts its own sacrifice, leans into the glinting knife, in the hopes that the flock survives.
I don't say this lightly. As someone aspiring and training to work in film, Mark Fischbach just changed the industry.
An independent, self financed, self distributed, self directed, self acted film set in one shoe-box sized room not only opened already making profits but has held #1 box office in the US this weekend and may honestly by a slim but completely doable chance hold #1 in the face of a new release by a powerhouse director and a corporate machine industry titan (Sam Raimi's Send Help, distributed by 20th Century)
Even if it doesn't, Mark just released that the projections put Iron Lung within half a million dollars of the projections for Send Help.
This is a massive massive shake up in the film industry and I would put money down that there are corporate suits out there sweating over emails, scheduling emergency meetings for Monday.
This is the second wind Hollywood needed.
Long live independent art, death to the corporate machine. And go see Iron Lung
growing up i never understood why people call vegan food bland because a lot of my family is vegan and i like their cooking just fine. but today i had a vegan burger from a fast food place that was using imitation meat and imitation cheese and imitation mayo and yeah it tasted fucking: Bad. an uncanny burger of lies and deceit. a burger with burger envy. like it couldnt embrace the fact it wasnt a real cheeseburger and was thus living a lie to appease its strict burger parents. you want good vegan food you need the stuff thats meant to be meat-free from the ground up. eat a delicious rice and bean bowl with me. take my hand. there is a better world.......
i dont want a childproofed internet i am almost 30 fucking years old. give your kid an internet safety talk and stop making it the problem of every adult on the planet every time some cryptkeeper legislator gets the brilliant idea (via conservative lobbying) to push through yet another bill gutting our access to free expression + increasing the powers of the surveillance state + lining the pockets of Big Data in the name of Protecting The Kids they wont even feed. this shit is exhausting i can’t believe we’re going to be fighting about it for the rest of my life
I don’t think I can stress enough how many people on here need a hobby like 95% of what people refer to as jobless behavior is actually just hobbyless behavior. Take up watercolors or tabletop or join a hiking group or something you probably won’t feel as much of an incessant need to freak out on the internet every day
