one of my favorite pieces of writing about cover songs (which i utilized in my dissertation chapter about black-jewish sonic solidarity, using nina simone's covers of songs by leonard cohen and bob dylan as case studies) comes from a chapter by daphne a. brooks (liner notes for the revolution is REQUIRED reading) and gayle wald on covers of dylan songs performed by women, in which they theorize the cover song through the metaphor of a sonic kiss. writing about odetta's covers specifically, they suggest, "if we think about singing as an embodied act—as air being pressed through the lungs or the diaphragm or the throat, and passing through the mouth and lips—we might think of the cover song as a kind of kiss. a kiss at some distance, to be sure, but a kiss nonetheless, and just as immediate, just as electrifying."
