every major structural social problem right now is basically "we don't have enough skilled workers on the ground" and the reason is always "well we've been intentionally underpaying and understaffng them for decades to increase corporate profits" and somehow the news always just mentions the "shortage" without digging into the cause
air travel is a mess? shortage of air traffic controllers - for some mysterious reason
logistics a mess? shortage of truck drivers - for some mysterious reason
public transit can't meet demand? shortage of bus drivers - for some mysterious reason
We even mysteriously have shortages of doctors, nurses, teachers... FOR SOME MYSTERIOUS REASON
FUCKING PAY PEOPLE AND HIRE ENOUGH STAFF
We need a sort of "six sigma no-blame" process, except taught to journalists. Report not just the immediate failure, but what sort of systemic causes allowed the failure. "This person fucked up" means the system failed to prevent the error, and that's still on the system - it usually means management is pushing the human component past spec.
Or failing journalists, some meta-organization above them better than "supernatural memes on Tumblr" would still be nice...
We have a shortage of doctors not because doctors aren't being paid enough but because doctors have successfully lobbied the government to prevent the shortage from being filled, in order to increase their wages.
I think that was actually one of the examples I had in mind when I wrote my reply - there are known causes for a lot of this, and it would probably be vastly easier to fix if we could just get journalists to actually dig in a few layers, instead of stopping at the superficial surfaces.
Teachers genuinely seem underpaid and over-administrated (and watching the administration bloat has got to make the underpaid thing hurt more) Air Traffic Controls are under the most absolutely insane obligations and working conditions ever. I cannot fathom why anyone would do it, unless it was funding their coke habit.
Doctors are an artificial shortage by strangling one part of the pipeline, and it would be so incredibly easy to fix that one. People still want to be doctors!
I'd imagine truckers are underpaid and under-appreciated, alongside facing a fairly clear threat of automation at some unspecified point in the future. But they also have a really strong union, and it's doing some solid work fighting against automation. But also it's social isolation for weeks on end, with nothing but music and podcasts to keep you company.
I have no clue what's up with bus drivers, honestly.
And a lot of times corporations are just firing salary-lowering gunshots when they complain: they can get as many workers as they want, they just resent paying a living wage.
Teaching is also a job where being understaffed can very quickly spiral into the job becoming unbearable/impossible.
Like understaffing means bigger classes.
Understaffing means you might end up having to teach a subject you know nothing about (shout out to my nemesis GEOGRAPHY), with minimal support.
Understaffing means that the kid who desperately needs a 1:1 support for their obvious severe SEN needs instead gets shoved into your lesson with no support except âyou deal with itâ. And you then have to try and explain that to their parents at parents evening in a way that makes your employers look good (or at least isn't going to get you labelled a troublemaker) whilst at the same time fielding their, honestly justified, anger at how their child is being failed by the system.
Understaffing means that you can't easily get support with behaviour issues because there just aren't enough staff to support.
Like if a school is already understaffed, then chances are any new staff they hire are going to be thrown into a nightmare scenario where they're being set up to fail and, worse, where they can see that the kids they work with are being set up to fail.
What are those staff going to do? Leave. Possibly leave teaching in general, because this sort of thing can also very quickly lead to burnout.
I miss when ads were a single click and then theyâre gone. Now every ad has a minimum of three phases where you watch a video, exit the still frame of fake gameplay, and then exit the app download. That doesnât even touch on the ones that forcibly take you to another app after opening a tab in safari without you ever touching the screen.
I hate advertising. I hate that you canât do anything without companies jumping down your throat with mostly bullshit ads. I hate that billboards exist. I hate that every company unanimously decided to make their ads longer and longer. I hate that ad blockers try to charge you money and there are in app purchases to remove ads. I hate that my attention has become commodified. I hate that thereâs nothing I can do about it.

okay, for those interested, here is a full timeline of how we got to Count Binface:
1977: Star Wars is released, featuring, of course, Darth Vader
(Pictured: Darth Vader)
1984: Director Todd Durham releases his Star Wars parody movie, Hyperspace, featuring Darth Vader inspired villain Lord Buckethead.
(Pictured: Hyperspace poster featuring two Jawa-esque aliens flying through space in a shopping trolley.)
1987: Hyperspace is released on video in the UK, under the new title Gremloids.
(Pictured: Gremloids cover in the style of the original Star Wars poster, featuring Lord Buckethead.)
To promote the film, Mike Lee, the owner of the distributing company, ran for parliament as Lord Buckethead. He ran in Margaret Thatcher's constituency, Finchley, in order to get on TV. Lord Buckethead was representing the Gremloids party.
(Pictured: Lord Buckethead on TV with Margaret Thatcher.)
1992: Gremloids is re-released. Lord Buckethead rides again, this time against prime minister John Major in Huntingdon. (Here's a fun fact about Huntingdon: I was born there! :D) 87/92 Buckethead seems to have leaned pretty hard into the space supervillain thing, with campaign promises including 'demolish Birmingham to build a spaceport'.
(Pictured: Lord Buckethead on TV with John Major. Other notable candidates include Screaming Lord Sutch of the Monster Raving Loony Party.)
2017: comedian Jon Harvey, having recently watched Gremloids and learned of Lord Buckethead's candidacy for parliament, decides it's a great bit. He runs against Theresa May in Maidenhead. 2017 Buckethead seems to have a wackier and also more political approach, with campaign promises ranging from nonsense like 'nationalise Adele' to gesturing at actually sensible policies with stuff like 'lower the voting age to 16 and restrict voting after age 80'.
He also made an appearance on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. As with his previous incarnation, he was a member of the Gremloids party.
(Pictured: Lord Buckethead dabbing on stage with Theresa May.)
2018: Director Todd Durham asserts his legal ownership of Lord Buckethead. Jon Harvey opted not to go to court over Buckethead and handed over the reins. Todd Durham extended an invitation to anyone who wanted to be the 'authorised' Lord Buckethead.
(Pictured: the new Lord Buckethead.)
2019: Lord Buckethead, now played by journalist David Hughes, stood against Boris Johnson in Uxbridge and South Ruislip. He ran for the Monster Raving Loony Party, the UK's pre-existing gag candidate party. He ran with a similarly silly manifesto as the 2017 incarnation, but with a bit less of a political edge. His promises included 'All doorways to be increased by 1 foot (30Â cm) in height' and 'Nigel Farage to be sold for parts'.
(Pictured: Lord Buckethead and Count Binface square up.)
Meanwhile, Jon Harvey in his new persona Count Binface, also ran against Boris Johnson. Buckethead and Binface face off! Binface ran as an independent with a manifesto once again blending silly and semi-serious promises such as 'nationalising model railways' and 'giving ÂŁ1 trillion a week to the NHS'. This was also I believe the debut of his promise to 'move the hand dryer in the men's toilet at Uxbridge's Crown and Treaty pub to a more sensible position'.
(Pictured: Count Binface presenting the offending hand dryer, inconveniently close to both the sink and the urinals.)
He has a point.
2021: Count Binface runs for the position of Mayor of London for the first time, with promises such as 'London to join the European Union'. He notably finished ahead of far right party UKIP.
2023: Count Binface runs in the Uxbridge and South Ruislip by-election following Boris Johnson's resignation. He once again gets more votes than UKIP.
May 2024: Count Binface once again runs to be Mayor of London, debuting his now iconic 'build at least one affordable house' promise. Notably, he finished ahead of far right party Britain First.
(Pictured: Count Binface with Rishi Sunak. Also pictured: Monster Raving Loony Party candidate Sir Archibald Stanton with a ventriloquist's dummy.)
July 2024: Count Binface stands in the general election, running in Richmond and Northallerton against prime minister Rishi Sunak. He debuts his promise to cap the price of 99p flakes at 99p. This is his most successful election to date with 308 votes.
(Pictured: Count Binface with Andy Burnham. Also pictured: independent candidate Robert Pownell, dressed as a fox for his own reasons.)
June 2026: Count Binface stands in the Makerfield by-election against Andy Burnham, (recently) former Mayor of Manchester running for parliament with the intention of standing in the Labour Party leadership contest.
(Pictured: Count Binface on BBC's Newsnight.)
July 2026 (this week): Count Binface announces his intention to run against Nigel Farage in the upcoming Clacton by-election. He is briefly the only other candidate in the race and by the time other candidates announce themselves the narrative of 'Nigel Farage vs Count Binface' has already bedded in. And then it was now, and then I don't know what happened.
listen, this sounds obvious, but then there's the raw milk people
It's wild to watch the phrase "tumblr sexyman" morph into "man that tumblr thinks is sexy," because when I first saw the phrase come into use, I always saw it used in reference to the phenomenon of "when presented with a wide array of fictional characters, tumblr will always pick the skinny white man to obsess over, and if the fan-favorite character has no canonical human appearance, the fandom will inevitably create a popular fanon of the character as as a skinny white man."
When I hear "tumblr sexyman," I think of Cecil Night Vale being constantly depicted as a skinny white man instead of literally anything else. I think of the background character white men who get elevated over protagonists that are women, people of color, or otherwise not the white man power fantasy.
"Tumblr sexyman" is, like. An insult. I DON'T want any of my blorbos to win a "tumblr sexyman" poll. "Tumblr sexyman" is the exact opposite of what I want my own OCs to be. If any of my characters ever get called "tumblr sexyman," I will have to immediately re-evaluate myself and the art I'm making.
Things I think of when I hear "tumblr sexyman":
Cecil Night Vale, as previously mentioned.
Oncelercest, because if there aren't two skinny white men to ship, tumblr fandom will start shipping the skinny white man with himself.
Bill Cipher inexplicably being fanon'd as a white twink despite being a fucking triangle.
Everyone fawning over Marvel Loki while shoving every woman and Black person in the MCU aside.
The way nearly every single character in Hazbin Hotel has the same "tall and skinny" body type, along with all the criticisms Black audience members have made about the issues with Alastor's design.
The way tumblr got obsessed with the white man villain in Sinners.

âThe loss was sudden and unexpected,â Neillâs family said in a statement Monday.
Neillâs career climbed an upward trajectory from the early 1980s to the late 1990s. His portrayal of real-life spy Sidney Reilly in the 1983 TV miniseries âReilly, Ace of Spadesâ was met with acclaim and largely marked his breakthrough on the international stage.
He played a Soviet submarine officer in the 1990 film âThe Hunt for Red Octoberâ and the husband of Holly Hunterâs Ada in the Oscar-winning historical romance âThe Pianoâ in 1993. Other notable roles include a haunted astrophysicist in the 1997 sci-fi horror film âEvent Horizonâ and a middle-aged Merlin, the wizard from the tales of King Arthur, in the 1998 NBC miniseries of the same name.
The latter role earned him one of two Emmy nominations and three Golden Globe nominations.
In the 2010s, Neill maintained his presence in TV and film with roles in the British crime drama series âPeaky Blindersâ and New Zealand filmmaker Taika Waititiâs 2016 comedy adventure âHunt for the Wilderpeople.â Neill had more than 150 screen credits.
In 1991, Neill was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services to acting. In 2007 he was made a Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, the New Zealand royal honors system, and in 2022 he accepted a knighthood.
Following his reprisal of the role of Dr. Alan Grant in the 2022 film âJurassic World: Dominion,â Neill revealed he had been diagnosed with a rare type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. He described his cancer battle in his 2023 memoir, âDid I Ever Tell You This?â
In an interview with The Guardian in 2023, Neill said he would like to live âanother decade or twoâ but that he was ânot afraid to die.â
âI canât pretend that the last year hasnât had its dark moments,â he said of his cancer diagnosis and treatment. âBut those dark moments throw the light into sharp relief, you know, and have made me grateful for every day and immensely grateful for all my friends. Just pleased to be alive.â
