Hi, something I have wondered for awhile. Why are dairy cows black and white? Is this something that was permanent breed into them, due to their diet, or just a lucky accident?

The black and white dairy cows are Holsteins, which make up 90% of the dairy herd of most countries, some other breeds are tan, some are dark chocolate brown, some are red…

As for why Holsteins are black and white (although there is a recessive gene for red in Holsteins!), the breed is 2000 years old and it’s thought black cows from Germany were crossed with white cows from the Netherlands to create black and white Holsteins lol.

Fun fact; Holsteins are genetically black with white spots, not the other way around :’)

a lot of the white markings are over black simply because solid black is a dominant trait in most animals.
